Re: Navarro: What makes him great?

Personal favourite is No One's Leaving. It doesn't sound like any other guitarist (that I know of) and Dave doesn't simply play a version of the bassline with extra licks Yeah, No One's Leaving is a total banger. I don't know of it appearing in the early sets, is it a later written song? Also, his ...

Re: Navarro: What makes him great?

Hoka - reading your response it dawned on me that I had never really listened to One Hot Minute beyond the singles, so it's blasting out as I write. I have to say, it is so much better than I expected! If anything this is a weirder, darker RHCP than I knew of. You're totally right that signature DN ...

Re: Navarro: What makes him great?

Your mistake here is speaking in the present tense. When is the last time Dave did anything you’re describing? That's a point worth digging into. See, I think it depends what he is working with. I know it doesn't necessarily have writing chronology, but the first three tracks on TGEA have some inte...

Navarro: What makes him great?

Dave Navarro, he's a fucking great guitar player. Over his run with JA you can say that: 1. He knows when to lock in as a rhythm player and when to take off as a lead player. 2. He knows when a song will benefit from NOT soloing (e.g. Then She Did - I clearly remember him saying in an interview how ...

Re: Official Spirits On Fire tour thread

It would be all too easy to take the piss out of Dave Navarro's stage image. Troy did a great job IMO and, by the sounds of it, stepped in at short notice.

Dave is a really fine guitarist, one of my all time favourites - purely because of his work in JA. I'm gonna start a thread in his honour.

Re: Dave and Eric on new Iggy Pop Record

Thing I like the most about 'The Regency' is the guitar work. The thing I like the most about 'Comments' is the bass line. Imagine if those two guys were in a band together, that would be really cool.

Re: Official Spirits On Fire tour thread

Yea that was Ronnie S Champagne, engineered on NS, RDLH. A few videos surfacing of Spokane, there's one of Jane Says and Stop from the back of the crowd, worth checking out for the audio, a lovely version of Jane Says and Perry's banter before Stop is very cool, spreading the love  The return...

Re: Official Spirits On Fire tour thread

I don't think this clip has been shared here yet, this follows the Josh Klingon Three Days performance, with Mt. Song (great intro; wicked solo; BVs from Troy), Daniel Ash coming on for Jane Says (nice atmospherics from Troy, again), followed by Slice of Life (Navarro must be gutted to have missed t...

Re: Official Dallas/first night of Spirits On Fire tour thread

Troy has a very Chris Chaney like effect on the band I was thinking just the opposite, the clips I saw Troy was moving around a lot, interacting with Perkins, pulling some shapes :) I wouldn't want a note for note replica of Dave's parts from a stand in guitarist, I want him to bring some of his ow...

Re: Official Dallas/first night of Spirits On Fire tour thread

Just watched the Jane Says performance mentioned earlier, I've gotta say I really like the guitar atmospherics, and Perry is singing it with soul, like he cares about the subject of the song. Really nice version, with some goosebump moments.

Re: Official Dallas/first night of Spirits On Fire tour thread

Interesting, they got a pretty enthusiastic reception from the crowd at the end (with Stop as the closer), so perhaps they won them over? Also I tend to forget that, although I'm pushing 50 and still think I would jump around to my favourite band, maybe the burger stall was super busy before they pl...

Re: Official Dallas/first night of Spirits On Fire tour thread

Tough gig for them - the audience are like fucking statues!!! They all sound good though. ANR was kickin', I liked Troy's energy, the wah was even a bit reminiscent of Pete D. If I'm not looking at the screen a lot of it is close enough to slip past undetected. The screen isn't adding much. Should'v...

Re: Perry's Imprint Label

Perry could use the label as bridge to negotiate terms for licensing the new material, use more bespoke label services / distribution models instead of having all the eggs with one company. But then, they are from the 'old days'. I bet most of the band are clued up enough about the industry to think...

Re: Use Your Illusion ('compact')

"What's so civil about rain, anyway?" "What we've got here...is failure to precipitate." :hehe: Brilliant. I found it quite difficult denying Civil Rain its place as the opener. I only had UYI 2 (on cassette) back in the day and only heard 1 in passing on friends' stereos, so it's always been track...

Hello everyone, First, I hope you are all safe and well, my sympathies to folks who have experienced casualty among their friends and family during the pandemic. Perry interview on BBC 6 Music

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m0008x2b I think you'll need to create an account to listen. This was pretty good fun, Perry sounds quite eloquent and the interviewer takes him through a potted history of his life and career including early memories of Janes. Love from the UK, where mushroom seaso...

This was a pretty interesting thread, although for me it just confirmed the worst. Again. I seem to remember getting the Hyperleaked version and hadn't heard the Martyn demo versions until now. With the exception of Martyn's tone and attack, it's all just 'Janes by numbers'. Bring the mood especiall...

Re: The end of Jane's or the whole rock band genre

Yup. And remember that JA sounded exciting as a rock alternative because of the way their less 'rock' influences shaped their rock'n'roll. Think about EA's basslines and the oft-stated influence of Peter Hook. Navarro, in an interview with Guitar Player way back, cited Robert Smith and Daniel Ash as...

Hello. You know what, hindsight is a wonderful thing, but the fact is that creativity is a response to one's experience of the world, with that in mind it is possible to argue for or against anyone's efforts. But, making work is putting yourself on the line, criticising it is easy. I loved Ritual wh...

Re: broken people

I can see the 'power' bit in the middle going down an absolute storm at festivals. In fact I can imagine it being sync'd in a number of contexts. I really like this song, the guitar reminds me of Kevin Shields, some good atmospheric layers in the background too. Different, somewhat 'straight' for Ja...

Re: Dave or Jimmy

I love all the nods to Zepp on the Them Crooked Vultures album - Grohl's first drum fill, Josh Homme's guitar tones and riffing on a number of tracks, plus some guy called John Paul Jones... And to think the same engineer was lined up to record JA at one point. I suppose it's obvious why that wouldn...
