Re: Coronavirus

I don't understand the whole "peaking thing". Why do people think its going to peak? You'd think it would be here as long as there are people to infect. As far as I know the Spanish flu didn't "peak", it was here for a year or something and died off only because everybody were either dead or had be...

Re: Coronavirus

NY is roughly half of all US infections. Half of all confirmed infections. That's important, because NY recently ramped up their testing way more than most other US states. The other thing to consider is that this is going to hit the middle of the country *way* harder than NY. NY has world-class he...

Re: The Lollapalooza Experience

God I feel so old. Is that what Lolla is like these days! SAD! It happened so subtly that I think anyone over 30 had difficulty noticing, but the generation below the Millenials doesn't give a shit about genre anymore. There are no "emo kids" or "goth kids" or "rockers" or "punks". Pop music and no...

Sort of "good news" for B.C. that helps justify what we're all doing: https://www.theglobeandmail.com/canada/british-columbia/article-bc-should-have-enough-beds-and-ventilators-for-covid-19-patients/ They think that the social distancing measures have actually helped keep things at a manageable lev...

Re: Coronavirus

I'm taking everything VERY seriously. I'm barely leaving the house. I'm social distancing. I'm wiping everything down at grocery stores. I'm washing my hands frequently.

I also do not believe worst case models will be reality. And the numbers will prove that right. Watch.

Re: Coronavirus

NYC has passed the point of being able to flatten the curve. The Army Corp of Engineers is there converting two convention centers (as well as dorms on two SUNY campuses) into makeshift hospitals because they are running out of space in the regular hospitals. Think about that. They are not reacting...

Hoka, just out of curiousity: are you a Trump supporter?
Because I don't like sensationalism? No, no I'm not.

But there are a lot of headlines cherry picking quotes and dealing with worse case projections that are causing undue panic.

Re: Coronavirus

Yes, so, suppose the death rate is very low. Unlike many other non-novel viruses / diseases, we don't have a treatment that actually works for this one. If you have an underlying condition, and you end up with pneumonia, and there is no ventilator for you, you're dead. That's not like anything we'v...

Re: What made your day today?

I have a screened in porch. The temps were upper 60s so I enjoyed some time out there today while working from home. I ordered takeout (all that's available) from my favorite Mexican place today and made margaritas.

This was the least anxiety ridden day I've had in some time.

Re: Coronavirus

I don't doubt we'll take our licks, but I do think we'll "flatten the curve." Good luck man, seriously. The picture isn’t looking good for the United States (and) Canada. New York will see the worst of it, and their hospitilazions per day are already decreasing. I think a lot of people are focused ...

St. Louis is under lockdown until 4/22, or as long as needed. People need to understand that the US is controlled more at the state or even county level more so than the federal. It is a massive country with a lot of different geographic regions, leaders, etc. As a result, some areas will fare worse...

St. Louis has issued a shelter in place order, which I'm happy about. We can still go get groceries. We can still take a walk. Let's shut everything down and get this over with.

Re: Coronavirus

It would be incredible (literally, unbelievable) if the current measures work and the numbers slow down to levels the system can handle. I suspect we'll still see upwards of 25% of the world infected in a few months. On a personal, local level. St. Louis has stopped all large gatherings over 250 pe...

Oh man... I just had a frightening thought: imagine if Trump somehow figures out how to use this to cancel the election?
He has zero Federal authority to do that. The states carry election authority.

It's also hard to imagine this still being as huge of an issue by November.

This is from the end of February: https://i.insider.com/5e62a449fee23d58c83a9e62?width=750&format=jpeg&auto=webp COVID-19 is more severe than the flu in terms of need for hospitalization and in terms of deaths. It’s also more severe for “mild” cases. It’s characterized by lung damage and pneumonia....
