Jesus christ. Artemis, you know my dad's worked in Toronto women and children's shelter housing since the 80s?... the horror stories I've heard... You are very lucky things turned out that way. Yes, that's for sure! I recall you mentioned he was a social worker. I didn't know he was worki...

Re: Free will is an illusion....?

I believe everyone will reach their breaking point and do what they needed to ensure survival. If you do not have that survival instinct like the rest of the natural world, then wouldn't that be defying the "laws of nature"? Or is that person making a choice to ignore the most primal instinct? It i...

Re: People and their toddlers and below

What about events such as weddings or parties where the hosts have explicitly stated that children are not welcome or "adults only" ? Is that discrimination? As a parent, would you be offended? This isn't specifically for Hoka, any parent here can chime in.

I have a theory about flies...... But I don't have time to help you now......... It's too late for your help now. :tiphat: I got the fly, but my lamp shade is a casuality. I swatted so hard I tore the shade. I become crazed around flying insects. I know why you hit your lamp shade..........

I'm not sure who Bill Moyers is but I like his commentary: In a web-exclusive video essay, Bill Moyers says Friday’s deadly shooting in Colorado is yet another tragic indication that our society — and too many of our politicians — covet guns more than common sense or life itself. The National Rifle ...

Re: What's annoying you today?

Flies in the house! I think there's a small hole in one of my window screens. Yesterday I killed 1 fly and today there's another one! This one I'm having trouble to kill. As soon as I get near enough to swat it with ny rolled up magazine it takes off. It's like it's taunting me. I won't be ab...

I saw this movie when I was really young and it has always stayed with me as being disturbing and creepy. I haven't watched again since, so I don't know if I would still feel the same. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/3/3e/Little_girl_who_lives_down_the_lane_movie_poster.jpg/220px-Litt...

Re: RIP Sherman Hemsley (George Jefferson)

Sad news for sure. The Jeffersons was one of my fave shows. Along with All In the Family and all the other Norman Lear shows of the 70s. When I heard the news I remembered the time when my friend Maria and I were at a James Brown concert. The venue had some pool tables and prior to the show starting...

Re: People and their toddlers and below

In a restaurant how many people would you think would be in there? Hundreds? I've worked places that got 700-800 people a shift. I don't ever recall losing customers because they were pissed off at children. :conf: There's a breakfast place near my house I won't go to again because of children and ...

Tilda Swinton was a great cast as the mother as was the actor who played Kevin.

If you've not read the book, I highly recommend it. The writing is excellent.

Re: Disturbing Films

One of the mostr disturbing and really funny films I have seen is the Belgian movie Man Bites Dog( C'est arrivé près de chez vous) http://film.thedigitalfix.com/content/id/4273/man-bites-dog.html Essentially, the synopsis of Man Bites Dog is very simple, almost too simple. A group of young Belgian d...

Re: People and their toddlers and below

What really cocks my pistol is when parents decide to let their toddlers walk up or down the stairs during rush hour on the subway line. I'm talking about the interchange stations. I would just pick up the kid and carry them up or down. When it's not so busy, then let them do the stairs.

Re: Free will is an illusion....?

I take it to be much clearer than this: A free will would be one which is radically unfettered by anything except itself. That is, my will is free if *nothing* outside of it determines it to move/act. That's how I would say it is too. I see it as someone who acts impulsively with no conscience or m...

Has anything come out about the mother?

It was reported that when she found out her son had been arrested, she confirmed that they had the right person. I took that to mean that she knows there is soemthing wrong with him.

Re: People and their toddlers and below

The chain movie theatres here and some of the independents have regular movie screenings for parents and babies/young children. Usually they're identified on the listings as "Moms&Tots". I think it's a great idea for the parents and for the childless movie patrons such as myself. I can't remember th...
