University ain't supposed to be 'useful'. Being useful is overrated. Tools are useful. Are you a tool?

No, you start the thread. :drink:  I resolve to continue posting less and starting less threads in the New Year. It's been easy what with being so insanely busy. I should be marking 50 papers at the moment. In the thread Larry starts I will explain that what I said had absolutely nothing to do ...

Re: Resolutions
Yeah I just wanted to say something about this because I've been arguing with fellow academics about it for years, and Will Kymlicka (big-name philosopher in my dept.) is publishing (or has already published, I forget) a book on animal rights, so everyone's talking about it. I don't have a problem w...

Re: Resolutions
I don't think even that argument was in favour of factory farming. No sane person thinks factory farming is good. My reason for posting it was mostly just that I think it's a mistake to think pescetarian or vegetarian eating is somehow harming less animals. A good reason for not eating factory farme...

Re: Resolutions
I'm going pescetarian after the new year so I'll be basically eating vegetarian+seafood. Mostly for health reasons and to try and lose some poundage but also because more and more I've been feeling bad about eating animals. I just don't think I could ever give up seafood cause I love it so. Plus yo...

Re: People to emulate
Larry, the problem is that sentences are not ideas, they're the symbolization of ideas, just like Jesus isn't Good itself, but a symbol of it (and not an overly ambitious one, anyway). I think the problem with admiring and emulating character in others is that to get it right, you'd have to see the ...

Jasper I'm a philosopher who specializes in systematicity and explanatory rationalism. I OBSESS about clarity. I was just being silly because in this case Larry has already lost, and he knows it.

Re: People to emulate
I would say not that I believe in sentences, but rather I believe that some things expressed by some sentences are true, and that this truth can be discerned through careful reasoning. Moral truths are often most easily expressed by actually being good (i.e., setting a good example), but care must b...

Re: People to emulate
Don't emulate people. Emulate ideas. Exemplars are useful for packaging some group of ideas together, but the problem is that it's too easy to confused irrelevant features of people for what is causally important to what is valuable about them. This is the source of a lot of confusion in religion, ...

I'm glad that Bob's on risperidone. You probably also need, or are on, lamotrigine (Lamictal).
