Jane’s Addiction pleases crowd at San Manuel

By Wes Woods, Inland Valley Daily Bulletin

Saturday, October 26, 2013

For a band that released its first major label album, “Nothing’s Shocking,” in 1988, Jane’s Addiction has aged well in the eyes of its fans.

Charismatic singer Perry Farrell, heavily tattooed guitarist Dave Navarro and rhythmic drummer Stephen Perkins all played shirtless most of the time before a packed and enthusiastic crowd Thursday night at San Manuel Indian Bingo and Casino.

Members of the Los Angeles-based band, which basically performed an hour-long greatest hits set, were in great shape for being in their mid-40s to 50s while bassist Chris Chaney looked thin but overdressed in his T-shirt.

“They look great and sound great,” said fan Andreau Bucholtz, 37, of Chino afterward. “It’s been 23 years since I’ve seen them in the Hollywood Palladium.

Her husband, David Bucholtz, 40, had purchased tickets for the show for her birthday.

“I’m more of a (Grateful) Deadhead. ... It’s my first time seeing them,” he said, adding he enjoyed the set.

Fans at times overpowered the band’s vocals and acoustic guitar while singing along to the final song of “Jane Says,” which is off the “Nothing’s Shocking” album.

Tricia Hendrick, 39, of Colton said her favorite song of the night was the singalong “Jane Says.”

“It was awesome,” Hendrick said.

Casino spokesman Jonathan Yost said more than 2,300 people were at the casino on Thursday night. Maximum capacity is 3,500.

Before the finale of “Jane Says,” the band — all wearing shirts —started with 2011’s “Underground” off their last album with new material, “The Great Escape Artist.”

Things appeared to be rolling in the set fine until their 1990 hit single, “Been Caught Stealing,” off the album “Ritual de lo habitual” where Farrell and the band sounded out of tune but the audience picked up the slack by shouting along the words and dancing in the aisles.

Slowly, the band worked its way out of the sound issues with Farrell’s showmanship on stage (he spun, jumped up next to drummer Perkins, worked the stage) and they gradually picked up steam with songs like “Another Soulmate,” “Ain’t No Right” and “Three Days.”

Farrell would also frequently talk to the audience between songs. At one point, he did an odd rant against genetically modified food and even said the group almost detoured to Mt. Baldy, where the group performed in July 1990.

“Mt. Baldy. I remember we had a pool party,” Farrell said. “Anybody at that pool party?”

Meanwhile, Navarro at times seemed bored plucking his guitar, but he woke up during “Three Days,” slapping his instrument and walking around the stage. He definitely picked up his energy for the finale of “Jane Says.”

The Bucholtzes, however, weren’t completely satisfied with the concert. They both wished the facility had better acoustics.

“It’s pretty flat,” Andreau said.

Opening psychedelic rock act Portugal The Man played an audience-pleasing set that ended with a cover of Pink Floyd’s “Another Brick in the Wall (Part 2),” melting into their own song, “Purple Yellow Red and Blue.”
