What was John Frusciante's opening set like? I have the bootleg but you cant make out anything he's saying
john was slamming his drink. he would put his head straight back,
and he slammed an entire bottle of this liquid. he had
two bottles on stage. and ultimately went for the 2nd bottle.
he got so wasted you could have only assumed it was straight vodka.
wasted. he later said kava and valerian, which sounds so benign.
he is either lying or he took an OD level dose of kava.
the best part of the whole night was
when john became totally uninhibited and said "god bless eric avery". i think
he said it twice. which was awesome and hilarious. i always wondered if perry heard that.
there is a bad quality vhs of john's set with terrible audio. if it was kava,
then he had a super, insanely strong dose to go into OD territory.
he was acting drunk, identical to a drunken person.
he had this glaze of uninhibitedness, and lost control of all motor skills.
from the first note, it was unforgettable sounding. he made it through what 5-6 songs?
he had that really old guitar that rick rubin have him.
the guitar tone and vocal tone sounded like a million bucks.
it couldn't have sounded any better.
his voice sounded the best i've ever heard ever.
he sounded pristine for the first two tunes, then fell off the rails.
we had just seen him recently at the roxy. which was really, really cool,
but soundwise was whatever. just a guy in a room yelling.
not great sonics. so hearing john on a big stage with a real sound
system was something else.
the water record had just come out. he opened with 'so would've i',
one of his most mystical and beautiful songs.
pretty sure anyway. it was one of the most glorious sounding things i've ever heard in my life. because
it's a very large venue with great sound. it sounded glorious to hear john's voice
amplified at that level, it sounded larger than life with a lot of delay. put
perry to shame that night. john, for a minute, sounded as good as any top
of the line solo acoustic performer. it was that good. he just owned it
at such a level. such good music.
this music hit like a ton of bricks. it was heavy as fuck. the only solo performer
i've ever heard reach this level of intensity with just a guitar, in a large venue,
is neil. we also happened to be right up front in front of the stage which didn't hurt.
you're hearing john in his prime playing a wicked, wicked tune, very loud,
just him solo acoustic, in a huge venue which is filled with electricity and vibe.
it was massive sounding. it was twilight, just starting to get dark, but still light out.
i thought it was extra special to see john, who a few years prior we all thought would be dead.
this night ended very sadly. we all watched him getting taken away in a stretcher.
but prior to getting hauled off, he was just acting wasted after being carried
off stage. out of his mind like a drunken lunatic. he couldn't sit still.
it was definitely funny, and extremely entertaining until the ambulance showed up.
talking shit on janes, while opening for them. it was awesome.
the fact that perry didn't say anything was kind of lame.
probably the last "jane's" show of the sort, with a level of excitement in the audience, because afterall this
was an actual "reunion" show. a few months prior to this stephen said "i'll never
ever play with perry ever again". then the coachella offer came in which
was like a half million (don't quote me). i heard $600k.
i also believe martyn on bass had a coolness to it. no doubt about that.
even if the guy is a complete goon in real life, he is part of the og family
and it was very, very cool to see him up there. way better fill-in than flea musically.
with martyn on bass you could somewhat pretend it was actually jane's addiction (which in reality it was not).
flea was there, played a tune. there was a janesy feel to the thing, which is has
been nonexistent for the past 17 years. it was a fun gig. but the truth
is that sonically was not all that exciting. the idea of it
all was more exciting than the reality. it just didn't have
a spark to it. no energy. the janes spark died in 1991.
still, even back in 2001, etty was on stage. there is no escaping
the dumb dancers. there's no getting around the stupid theatrics
with this band. so stupid. there was the typical stupid
stage crap, dumb dancers, and a break for the jubilee speech, etc.
but musically pretty decent. it was more exciting to watch the
show than listen to the show. sonically, it was like "whatever".
there was a lack of energy from the band, which
they've now made they're signature trait. in hindsight it's easy to tell
that there was not a lot of rehearsal (which they don't really need) and that
on a personal level they had kinda just started talking again.
everything was so dumbed down and slow.
perry looked nervous. this was the first show in a while, and you
can tell he wasn't that banshee motherfucker anymore.
there seemed to be, as always, a desire to impress, doing the stupid
drum circle thing, going to the center stage, having the dancers.
instead of focusing on performance and kinetic energy. no semblance
of old school jane's vibe. all downhill from this show. this show
was reminiscent of the 1997 shows. basically the same thing over again
with less intensity and energy. same dull predictable setlist.
you would have to pay me to sit and listen to the recording of this show.
there's nothing there, no spark. it was cool live. but why would you
listen to something that is only 30% or so of the original.
if i'm going to listen to jane's addiction, (which is very rarely),
it's gonna be an old school live show
because everything pales in comparison.
for jane's it was all downhill from this show forward.
SB, then coachella, then all downhill.
the best jane's show in the past 2 decades was when they "broke up" at the universal amphitheater
though, the show where perry refused to sing. that was fucking great. anyone have that video?
hahahhaha. so good.
