Koko, London - 30 August

#1 Post by Japhy » Thu Aug 04, 2011 5:44 am

Just want to be the first to post in this section really!

So, Koko on Tues 30th August. Not sure what i'm expecting (i know it's stupid to want Kettle Whistle for instance) but i'm sure it will be a great show either way... i'm certainly looking forward to it.

I'm not one for accurate set-lists but i'll definitely post a review... i bet you can't wait...

Anyway, Bandit, did you get a ticket in the end?

I haven't yet. I could pick one up on ebay for £60 but I still don't know if I can get the time off work! I would have to take the Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday off. I will let you know but it's looking doubtful as I'm pretty busy at the mo.

Seriously? How come... simply because it's Janes in a club... and a pretty cool Camden club at that? I totally understand but you reached the "i'm done" stage far quicker than i figured i would, and i completely get why too. I've been away for a week or so and haven't listened to any Janes during that time... i think i'm going to keep it that way until the show, just so i'm proper amped for it on the night. Trying not to think about the stage theatrics too much - i'm sure it will be girls on wires again but i'd rather have all the paraphenalia (spelling???)... dolls, beads, xmas lights etc.

They didn't play Summertime Rolls... it was Up the Beach.

Really good show as it happens but, yeah, disappointed that they didn't mix it up. There were plenty of lengthy pauses between songs but maybe that was because PF didn't feel right still.

ETTL was really fucking heavy... the only negative is that it doesn't really go anywhere - maybe it was just a little flat because a lot of the crowd didn't know it.

Ted was stand-out for me, but then it pretty much always is. Three Days was stellar and both Stop / ANR were great.

Cool. I'm surprised they played Three Days. Dunno why. What I want to know is why aren't the fans there posting on here?

Did he say much about his voice? Or if they were coming back next year?

that's something me and dannyboy were talking about last night. When you're on this board, you can easily feel like you are the Janes fan-base and there's no-one else out there. Koko was rammed with a good mix of old-timers, kids etc... there's plenty of Janes fans out there that just don't want to waste their days on a website!!!

No, no mention of next year or anything like that. There was some good banter though for sure... and i got to say that the dancers (etty included) looked fricking hot.

I'll check the clips out when i get home. The pit was small (but then it's a small club) but it was pretty physical... i'm bruised everywhere... but it feels good!

Yeah, strong version of the song and I like the little off-the-cuff rap Perry does in the break. Perry does sound a little weak on the vox but his and the band energy easily make up for it.

interesting review

http://www.independent.co.uk/arts-enter ... 47169.html
Jane's Addiction are both a product and a victim of their time. Formed in the same city (Los Angeles) in the same year (1985) as Guns N' Roses, they ascended to their pinnacle in 1990, even then overshadowed by the heavy metal titans next door, only to then split up for the first of what would be two times in 1991. Their history is fractured and staccato, one of acrimony and reformation, but the warm embrace afforded the band by tonight's crowd at Koko speaks volumes about the impact that their first two albums had on a generation of young rockers.

Unfortunately, tonight's show seldom offers anything more than retreading of old ground. Not just musically – although tracks from the group's first two LPs dominate the setlist – but stylistically; the gestures, the overlong solos, the between-song patter all feel transplanted from the era in which Jane's Addiction were a phenomenon.

Not to intimate that the band is now devoid of talent; far from it. Chris Chaney's aggressive, percussive bass playing is tremendous, Stephen Perkins's drumming driving along track after track. Dave Navarro's wailing guitar is beautifully played at times (if sometimes for too long), but standing atop a monitor, shirtless and baring his copious tattoos to all, he looks as if he's teleported in from another band altogether. Frontman Perry Farrell's vocals are still impressively far-reaching, but are overwhelmed by the unstoppable riffs of Navarro's lead guitar for much of the time, as well as being frustratingly plagued by feedback problems throughout.

In the thrilling throes of the big hits – "Been Caught Stealing", "Mountain Song", the excellent "Just Because" – the band are charged and focused, creating an electric atmosphere befitting their origins as an edgier, spikier GnR. Other tracks, however, become rudderless, the group not sure whether to follow the lead of Farrell or Navarro, early promise dissolving into an impenetrable mélange of effects pedals. Songs all too often sound like ersatz versions of Aerosmith or Rage Against The Machine, the LA quartet channelling their roots without ever really escaping them, sounding dated rather than revitalised.

Most people in attendance seem to wish it was 1990 again, and on tonight's evidence it looks like Jane's Addiction feel much the same way.
