Which Canadian school shooting was our 9/11? There have been a few... Was it this one: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%89cole ... e_massacre ? That one was pretty bad.

Anyway, hope the hostage dealy in Sydney ends well.

Maybe kv meant the shooting in October at Parliament Hill.

A terrible situation in Sydney. Sound like te guy is acting alone and not affiliated with any group. So far, it;s been reported that the guy is a 49 year old Iranian refugee with a criminal record, and self-proclaimed cleric.

Three dead including the gunman. Another 'loan wolf' attack which is kind of what the Islamic State are after. Not good at all.

I'm not sure how credible all these foiled attacks that are banded in the papers are....especially the ones in the UK. I'm sure intelligence is very good, but of the arrests they make, you don't here anything else. An extremely small percentage of these stories end up in some sort of conviction.

A few headlines we had to stir the media into a frenzy...
He is notorious in Australia for sending abusive letters to family members of soldiers killed in Afghanistan and was sentenced to 300 hours of community service for his campaign.
He was later charged with being an accessory in the murder of his ex-wife.
Sydney Hostage-Taker Accused Of 47 Sex Attacks
So why wasn't he locked up?

Then we get a past quote from Monis saying
"Islam is against oppression and any unfair violence. Islam is against terrorism. As I have repeatedly said earlier: 'this pen is my gun and these words are my bullets, I fight by these weapons against oppression to promote peace'."
In the western world where freedom of speech is so widely tolerated, how long before legislation comes in banning preachers of hate? :noclue:

Guns aren't banned in Australia per se, but owning and certainly buying them is a lot more restricted that it seems to be elsewhere. You can't just go to the equivalent of Walmart or a sporting goods store and buy a rifle (or handgun) nor are M-16s or other automatic weapons seen "everywhere".

What sort of gun did this guy have? From what I've seen it's not yet clear.
