I think what Trump is doing to this country and our relations with the rest of the world is awful and based on abhorrent means. :essence:

But that was some of his finest work......

Trump Takes On the Teens
President Trump recently told reporters that, in the interest of national security, he was considering a ban of the Chinese-owned social video platform TikTok in the United States. Then, on Monday, Mr. Trump confirmed that he had given Microsoft, which has expressed interest in buying the app, or any additional American companies until Sept. 15 to acquire it.

“Trump doesn’t know anything about TikTok, and he doesn’t actually care — he just says stuff like this because it’s his favorite thing to do,” Seth Meyers said on Monday’s “Late Night.”

“I’m almost certain Trump has no idea what TikTok is. I’m betting TikTok was one of the answers he wrote on his cognitive test.” — SETH MEYERS

“Apparently this is a real national security threat, the Chinese government knowing which Americans can and can’t dance.” — JIMMY FALLON

“I am sure it has everything to do with national security and nothing to do with the TikTok teens who sabotaged his Tulsa rally.” — JIMMY FALLON

“Trump gave Microsoft 45 days to make a deal, although they’ll spend the first 44 days clicking ‘remind me tomorrow.’” — JIMMY FALLON

“It’s a big day for the three TikTok fans that also love Excel spreadsheets.” — JIMMY FALLON

“Trump doesn’t know anything about TikTok, and he doesn’t actually care — he just says stuff like this because it’s his favorite thing to do. He loves to stand on the White House lawn next to a giant whirring helicopter and shout empty pronouncements at reporters because it makes him feel like he’s actually the president and not just some soulless husk who fell ass-backward into a job he wasn’t qualified for because some dummy made fun of him at a dinner once.” — SETH MEYERS, referring to his jabs at Mr. Trump while hosting the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner in 2011.

“What is he doing? Is he the president of the United States or the preacher from ‘Footloose’?” — JIMMY FALLON

“[Imitating Trump] We’re also looking very strongly at Candy Crush. We don’t want criminals like the Jelly Queen and Cupcake Carl coming into our country. Joe Biden doesn’t have what it takes to stop the bubble gum troll.” — SETH MEYERS

“Trump is playing hard ball with China. If he bans TikTok, China will only be able to spy on our phones, TVs, cars and refrigerator. So, that’s where he draws the line.” — JIMMY FALLON

“The president can’t just unilaterally ban a social media app, and I don’t trust Republicans to regulate social media since most of them don’t seem to understand it.” — SETH MEYERS

“At first Trump was confused because he thought TikTok was the name of ‘60 Minutes.’” — JIMMY FALLON

“But on the bright side, Trump is also using executive action to stop people from writing Instagram captions like ‘So this happened.’” — JIMMY FALLON

I usually get a chuckle out of Rex Huppke's columns.

Column: Biden picks Kamala Harris. Trump should dump Mike Pence and replace him with a yacht.

By REX HUPPKE
CHICAGO TRIBUNE
AUG 12, 2020 AT 5:00 AM

Presumptive Democratic nominee Joe Biden’s decision to choose Sen. Kamala Harris as his running mate leaves President Donald “Scared” Trump with little choice — he needs to dump Vice President Mike Pence.

I know, it’s a shame for both Trump and Pence. The two seemed like a match made in a strange and wildly inaccurate version of heaven.

But Trump will see the fanfare the Harris pick brings — she’s an energetic and experienced lawmaker, a former prosecutor and attorney general, and the first woman of color on a major party ticket — and then he’ll look over at Pence and see a man as electrifying as a dollop of mayonnaise.

For a president who spends most of his time watching TV or tweeting about things he saw on TV, the telegenic Harris will be too much to bear.

Sure, the Trump campaign will start out, as it did moments after Biden’s announcement of his vice presidential pick Tuesday, with attempts to smear Harris for having “embraced the left’s radical manifesto” (speaking of which, someone send me the manifesto, I didn’t get it) and suggesting she will help Biden “surrender control of our nation to the radical mob” and “open our borders” and “appease socialist dictators.”

But Harris presents a problem for those whose thinking has been impaired by Fox News overexposure. She’s not a radical leftist of any sort. She’s a former prosecutor who, if anything, has a prosecutorial background that bothers the far left. A presidential primary campaign and years of public service mean she’s already well-vetted, and her energy and relative youth compared with Biden, and with Trump, for that matter, will give the campaign a spark.

She doesn’t suffer fools lightly and won’t be easy for Trump to pin down with demeaning nicknames or sexist swipes. I’m not saying Harris is perfect, or Biden is an unstoppable force. Not even close.

But Harris is a smart pick, and she’ll give Biden the thing Trump craves most: attention.

That will drive President Me-Me-Me nuts, and you can bet your membership to Mar-a-Lago that come the next round of not-so-great poll numbers, he’ll start seeing Pence’s personality — one part lightly salted mashed potatoes, one part guy whose faux-piety makes you kind of squirmy — as a liability.

And don’t think Pence is indispensable. Trump needed him the first time around to reassure/con evangelical voters into overlooking his history of being a womanizer, a foul-mouthed bully and, well, a Democrat. But Trump has fully Trumpnotized evangelicals. They’ve bitten the Trump-branded apple and he could pick the lyrics to a Marilyn Manson song as his running mate without losing voters.

Imagine the possible ways Trump could spice up his campaign by ditching Milquetoast Mike and firing up his addicted-to-being-fired-up base.

The most noted possibility is former U.N. ambassador Nikki Haley, but she seems tied up lately in a dispute with The Popcorn Factory, an Illinois-based company that apparently messed up some delivery orders.

Haley tweeted Monday: “Ok @PopcornFactory two messed up birthday orders missed delivery dates with no explanation. First time I gave you the benefit of the doubt. Second one tells me not to buy from you again. #DisappointedNephew.”

She’s clearly not in a good position to join the Trump campaign right now. Thoughts and prayers.

But there are other sensible vice presidential suggestions to help get the Trump Train chugging:
-An angry can of Goya beans. Not long ago, after the head of Goya Foods praised Trump, the president continued his demolition of political ethics by promoting several of the brand’s cans of beans. People in Trump’s campaign are likely to think this will constitute diversity, and if the can of beans can effectively communicate a message of intolerance, it will perfectly augment Trump’s reelection message.
-The MyPillow guy holding a can of angry Goya beans. Trump’s base LOVES Mike Lindell, the CEO and founder of MyPillow, a company that makes pillows that I assume cause liberals neck pain. Pairing Trump with Lindell would energize voters who admire TV salesmen, and the angry Goya beans would just be added value for the campaign.
-A yacht emblazoned with Trump banners. This is likely to be Trump’s ideal pick. He has repeatedly tweeted images of yachts and other large boats displaying Trump flags and signs with exclamations like: “We love our boaters!” There’s even a “Boaters for Trump” hat for sale on the Trump campaign website. So why not leverage this sensible appeal to America’s forgotten men and women — the yacht owners who for so long have had no voice — by ditching Pence and replacing him with a sleek Riviera 6000 Sport Yacht. The slogan writes itself: “Trump/Yacht 2020: Make America Buoyant Again!”

The bottom line is that Democratic excitement over Biden’s choice of Harris has to be met with something splashy. And you couldn’t make Pence splashy if you threw him off a Riviera 6000 Sport Yacht.

So go for it, Mr. President. Dump Mike and find the running mate of your reality television dreams. I hear Kanye’s available.

Boat sinks on Willamette River as ‘Trump Boat Parade’ passes by

Aug 16, 2020

By Elliot Njus | The Oregonian/OregonLive and Samantha Swindler | The Oregonian/OregonLive

A boat on the Willamette River took on water and sank Sunday afternoon after being swamped by waves as a “Trump Boat Parade” passed.

Video posted to Twitter showed the boat taking on water as its occupants called for help while more than 20 boats and personal watercraft flying President Donald Trump flags headed south on the Willamette River near downtown Portland.

Sgt. Bryan White, a spokesman for the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office, said river patrol deputies responded to the incident but that the people on the boat had already been picked up by other boaters in the area by the time the deputies arrived. Video appeared to show at least one of the boats that stopped to help was a parade participant.

White said no one was injured and the agency wouldn’t be investigating further. He said the swamped boat wasn’t part of the parade.

People think this is a joke.

Kanye will be President one day.

He has all the right words and is without a doubt "known" and very popular......

I think Pence will be dumped and Trump is seriously vetting this for 2020.

Miles Taylor was in the Administration's circle and used to be a Trump supporter. His compelling PBS NewsHour interview got my attention. During the interview he mentioned that he will be speaking more about his observations in the upcoming weeks. (He also indicated that more republicans officials will be coming forward with their observations.)

Here is an opinion piece he provided to the Washington Post:
https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions ... story.html

At Homeland Security, I saw firsthand how dangerous Trump is for America
Opinion by Miles Taylor
August 17, 2020 at 2:05 p.m. EDT

Miles Taylor served at the Department of Homeland Security from 2017 to 2019, including as chief of staff.

After serving for more than two years in the Department of Homeland Security’s leadership during the Trump administration, I can attest that the country is less secure as a direct result of the president’s actions.

Like many Americans, I had hoped that Donald Trump, once in office, would soberly accept the burdens of the presidency — foremost among them the duty to keep America safe. But he did not rise to the challenge. Instead, the president has governed by whim, political calculation and self-interest.

I wasn’t in a position to judge how his personal deficiencies affected other important matters, such as the environment or energy policy, but when it came to national security, I witnessed the damning results firsthand.

The president has tried to turn DHS, the nation’s largest law enforcement agency, into a tool used for his political benefit. He insisted on a near-total focus on issues that he said were central to his reelection — in particular building a wall on the U.S. border with Mexico. Though he was often talked out of bad ideas at the last moment, the president would make obviously partisan requests of DHS, including when he told us to close the California-Mexico border during a March 28, 2019, Oval Office meeting — it would be better for him politically, he said, than closing long stretches of the Texas or Arizona border — or to “dump” illegal immigrants in Democratic-leaning sanctuary cities and states to overload their authorities, as he insisted on several times.

Trump’s indiscipline was also a constant source of frustration. One day in February 2019, when congressional leaders were waiting for an answer from the White House on a pending deal to avoid a second government shutdown, the president demanded a DHS phone briefing to discuss the color of the wall. He was particularly interested in the merits of using spray paint and how the steel structure should be coated. Episodes like this occurred almost weekly.

The decision-making process was itself broken: Trump would abruptly endorse policy proposals with little or no consideration, by him or his advisers, of possible knock-on effects. That was the case in 2018 when then-Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced, at the White House’s urging, a “zero tolerance” policy to prosecute anyone who crossed the border illegally. The agencies involved were unprepared to implement the policy, causing a disastrous backlog of detentions that ultimately left migrant parents and their children separated.

Incredibly, after this ill-conceived operation was rightly halted, in the following months the president repeatedly exhorted DHS officials to restart it and to implement a more deliberate policy of pulling migrant families apart en masse, so that adults would be deterred from coming to the border for fear of losing their children. The president was visibly furious on multiple occasions when my boss, then-Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, refused.

Top DHS officials were regularly diverted from dealing with genuine security threats by the chore of responding to these inappropriate and often absurd executive requests, at all hours of the day and night. One morning it might be a demand to shut off congressionally appropriated funds to a foreign ally that had angered him, and that evening it might be a request to sharpen the spikes atop the border wall so they’d be more damaging to human flesh (“How much would that cost us?”). Meanwhile, Trump showed vanishingly little interest in subjects of vital national security interest, including cybersecurity, domestic terrorism and malicious foreign interference in U.S. affairs.

How can you run a huge organization under those conditions? You can’t. At DHS, daily management of its 250,000 employees suffered because of these frequent follies, putting the safety of Americans at risk.

The president has similarly undermined U.S. security abroad. His own former national security adviser John Bolton made the case so convincingly with his recent book and public accounts that there is little to add, other than to say that Bolton got it right. Because the commander in chief has diminished America’s influence overseas, today the nation has fewer friends and stronger enemies than when Trump took office.

Trump has also damaged the country in countless ways that don’t directly involve national security but, by stoking hatred and division, make Americans profoundly less safe.

The president’s bungled response to the coronavirus pandemic is the ultimate example. In his cavalier disregard for the seriousness of the threat, Trump failed to make effective use of the federal crisis response system painstakingly built after 9/11. Years of DHS planning for a pandemic threat have been largely wasted. Meanwhile, more than 165,000 Americans have died.

It is more than a little ironic that Trump is campaigning for a second term as a law-and-order president. His first term has been dangerously chaotic. Four more years of this are unthinkable.

Open letter from over 70 former republican security officials:

https://www.defendingdemocracytogether. ... -security/

https://apps.washingtonpost.com/g/docum ... rump/2116/
We are former national security officials who served during the administrations of Presidents Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, George W. Bush, and/or Donald Trump, or as Republican Members of Congress. We are profoundly concerned about the course of our nation under the leadership of Donald Trump. Through his actions and his rhetoric, Trump has demonstrated that he lacks the character and competence to lead this nation and has engaged in corrupt behavior that renders him unfit to serve as President.

For the following reasons, we have concluded that Donald Trump has failed our country and that Vice President Joe Biden should be elected the next President of the United States.

1. Donald Trump has gravely damaged America’s role as a world leader. Trump has disgraced America’s global reputation and undermined our nation’s moral and diplomatic influence. He has called NATO “obsolete,” branded Europe a “foe,” mocked the leaders of America’s closest friends, and threatened to terminate longstanding US alliances. Other global leaders, friends and foes alike, view him as unreliable, unstable, and unworthy of respect.

2. Donald Trump has shown that he is unfit to lead during a national crisis. Instead of rallying the American people and the world to confront the coronavirus, Trump has spent the past half year spreading misinformation, undermining public health experts, attacking state and local officials, and wallowing in self-pity. He has demonstrated far greater concern about the fate of his reelection than the health of the American people.

3. Donald Trump has solicited foreign influence and undermined confidence in our presidential elections. Trump publicly asked Russian president Vladimir Putin to assist his 2016 campaign, called on Chinese president Xi Jinping to “start an investigation” into his current political opponent, and pressured the president of Ukraine to act against his opponent. Citing exaggerated claims of voter fraud, he has challenged the integrity of this year’s election, even suggesting that it be postponed.

4. Donald Trump has aligned himself with dictators and failed to stand up for American values. Trump has regularly praised the actions of dictators and human rights abusers. He proclaimed his “love” and “great respect” for North Korean strongman Kim Jong Un, endorsed “brilliant leader” Xi Jinping’s move to serve as China’s president for life, repeatedly sided with Vladimir Putin against our own intelligence community, and pronounced himself a “big fan” of Turkish president Recep Erdogan despite his crackdown on democracy.

5. Donald Trump has disparaged our armed forces, intelligence agencies, and diplomats. Trump has attacked Gold Star families, scoffed at American prisoners of war, interfered in the military justice system, and embroiled our military in domestic politics. He has ridiculed US intelligence agencies and falsely branded our nation’s diplomats as the “deep state.”

6. Donald Trump has undermined the rule of law. Trump has compromised the independence of the Department of Justice, repeatedly attacked federal judges, and punished government officials who have sought to uphold the law. To protect himself from accountability, he has fired officials who launched investigations or testified against him, threatened whistleblowers, dangled pardons as incentives to stay silent, and blocked prison time for a political crony convicted of lying on his behalf. He has impugned journalists investigating his misconduct and has repeatedly denounced the press as the “enemy of the people.”

7. Donald Trump has dishonored the office of the presidency. Trump engages in childish name-calling, mocks the disabled, belittles women, persistently lies, peddles baseless conspiracy theories, and continually embarrasses Americans in the eyes of the world.

8. Donald Trump has divided our nation and preached a dark and pessimistic view of America. Trump consistently seeks to incite political, racial, and ethnic divisions, weakening our nation and delighting our adversaries. In contrast to Reagan’s vision of America as a “shining city on a hill,” Trump speaks of “American carnage,” pits Americans against each other, and stokes fears that “angry mobs” and “anarchists” are destroying our country.

9. Donald Trump has attacked and vilified immigrants to our country. Trump routinely denigrates immigrants and inflames prejudices as he seeks support for his reelection. Despite America’s legacy as a nation of immigrants, he has demonized Americans who come from other countries, even telling members of Congress whose families immigrated to the United States to “go back” to the “crime-infested places” from which they came.

10. Donald Trump has imperiled America’s security by mismanaging his national security team. Trump has dismissed or replaced — often by tweet — the secretaries of State, Defense, and Homeland Security, the Attorney General, the Directors of National Intelligence and the FBI, three National Security Advisors, and other senior officials in critical national security positions, many because they refused to cover for his misdeeds or demonstrate sufficient personal loyalty.

While we – like all Americans – had hoped that Donald Trump would govern wisely, he has disappointed millions of voters who put their faith in him and has demonstrated that he is dangerously unfit to serve another term.

In contrast, we believe Joe Biden has the character, experience, and temperament to lead this nation. We believe he will restore the dignity of the presidency, bring Americans together, reassert America’s role as a global leader, and inspire our nation to live up to its ideals.

While some of us hold policy positions that differ from those of Joe Biden and his party, the time to debate those policy differences will come later. For now, it is imperative that we stop Trump’s assault on our nation’s values and institutions and reinstate the moral foundations of our democracy.

To that end, we are firmly convinced that it is in the best interest of our nation that Vice President Joe Biden be elected as the next President of the United States, and we will vote for him.

Trump's 'plane loaded with thugs' conspiracy theory matches months-old rumor
Evidence-free social media posts about groups of people coming to terrorize suburbs have thrived in recent months, inspiring some people to arm themselves.
Sept. 1, 2020, 8:32 AM EDT
By Ben Collins

The conspiracy theory that President Donald Trump pushed Monday that a plane “almost completely loaded with thugs” had been set to disrupt the Republican National Convention was almost identical to a rumor that went viral on Facebook three months ago.

In an interview with Fox News host Laura Ingraham, Trump claimed that “we had somebody get on a plane from a certain city this weekend, and in the plane it was almost completely loaded with thugs, wearing these dark uniforms, black uniforms, with gear and this and that.”

He then claimed the matter was “under investigation right now.”

There is no evidence of any such flight. When Ingraham asked for more information about the flight, the president said, "I'll tell you sometime." He then alleged the people had been headed to Washington to disrupt the RNC.

Before mentioning the uniformed men who allegedly boarded the plane, Trump claimed that there are “people that are in the dark shadows” and “people that you haven’t heard of” controlling Democratic nominee Joe Biden.

Ingraham pressed the president for more details and said it sounded like he was alleging a conspiracy.

“They’re people that are on the streets. They’re people that are controlling the streets,” Trump said.

The claim about the flight matches a viral Facebook post from June 1 that falsely claimed, “At least a dozen males got off the plane in Boise from Seattle, dressed head to toe in black.” The post, by an Emmett, Idaho, man, warned residents to “Be ready for attacks downtown and residential areas,” and claimed one passenger had “a tattoo that said Antifa America on his arm.”

That post was shared over 3,000 times on Facebook, and other pages from Idaho quickly added their own spin to it, like the Idaho branch of the far-right militia group 3 Percenters.

One post claimed that “Antifa has sent a plane load of their people” and that the Payette County Sheriff’s Office confirmed it. Within days, that version of the rumor picked up enough steam in Idaho Facebook groups that the Payette County Sheriff’s Office had to release a statement insisting that the viral rumor was “false information.”

Rumors of marauding bands of Antifa supporters have plagued local Facebook groups, chain emails and forwarded text messages since mid-May. One of the most viral rumors on an Antifa invasion into the suburbs was taken down after Twitter said it was created by a troll account with ties to white nationalists.

Some armed Americans took to town squares in several towns to fight off fictitious busloads of Antifa in June, spurred by false rumors on Facebook pages. Seven days after the original Idaho rumor went viral on Facebook, armed men stood guard over protests in Missoula, Montana, worried about the planeloads of Antifa supporters.

FAR TOO MANY PEOPLE BELIEVE PRESIDENT TRUMP’S NEXT OUTBURST WILL BE THE ONE THAT FINALLY BRINGS HIM DOWN.

IN FACT, THE EXACT OPPOSITE IS TRUE: HIS OUTRAGEOUS ANTICS AND WILD LIES ARE HIS BIGGEST STRENGTH.

This may drive you a little crazy.
Amanda Carpenter says: That’s the point.
Over the years, Trump has developed a winning formula that forces anyone who stands in his way into a discombobulated state of weakness and confusion.

In Gaslighting America, Carpenter breaks down Trump’s playbook, showing why it’s practically foolproof, manipulating all the major players—the Republicans, the Democrats, the media, and the victims of his method—perfectly. She traces how this tactic started with Nixon, gained traction with Bill Clinton, and exploded under Trump.

Carpenter explains that when Trump seizes control over the political narrative, he always follows the same steps:

First
- He stakes out political territory no one else would dare occupy, taking over the news cycle.

Next - He denies responsibility while simultaneously advancing the story.

His third step may be his most maddening: - He creates suspense for his story by saying more information is coming soon.

His fourth step
is carefully selecting a detractor to attack, often finding the weakest opponent or someone who will be severely damaged by taking a roll in the mud with him. If he’s successful, and sometimes even when he’s not, he’ll proceed to....

The fifth step:
- Declaring victory under any circumstance.

Just seemed particularly apt to revisit. I know this is tedious....... but the mass media and social media is awful, awful, awful and people are still falling for the shit from Trump. Most importantly, even when they think they are not.

He is extremely calculating. The golf analogy and bad people on planes is not random. It is extremely specific/visual on purpose, so that TRUMP is the story. He HAS to be the story or else no one would listen to him. People/media are rapt in their fascination. It is the media's fault for falling for it and our (US populations) fault for not calling the media out on it. Trump knows we are tools in following his every word. He knows exactly what he is doing.

The election has always just been a popularity contest, most especially now. He is the one being talked about. People vote for "winners"...........he is winning the media and thus people's brains "biggly". If there were no CNN, MSNBC, FOX, Twitter, Facebook, there would be no Trump. I know that sounds obvious. But we really need to recognize that Trump is just a reflection of our culture. He didn't invent Twitter or Facebook or CNN or MSNBC or FOX. He is the end product and he is NOT a singularity.

If Trump all of a sudden just went away, there would be another Trump (Be it Kanye, Marc Benioff, AOC, etc) who would win, in our current culture.

There is no chance whatsoever that Biden will beat Trump at this point.

But it will be alright for now..... :noclue:

The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Friday shows that 52% of Likely U.S. Voters approve of President Trump’s job performance. Forty-eight percent (48%) disapprove.

If this holds (at low point of Trump's term....right?)..... it's over.

I'm wondering if Nate Silver will feel like an idiot....again? :hs:

Those are all MUCH smaller margins than this time 2016.

Yeah, woman. But Trump has a 52% overall approval rating (now) and is an incumbent.

Yeah man  , but only with the Rasmussen poll. Seriously though, he hasn't been polling well. https://projects.economist.com/us-2020- ... /president

I remember what happened with the polls in 2016, but let me have hope so I can get some sleep at night.

Here's the second paragraph of the article you linked from Rasmussen: "The latest figures include 42% who Strongly Approve of the job Trump is doing and 42% who Strongly Disapprove. This gives him a Presidential Approval Index rating of 0. (see trends)"

Seriously, I am starting to think that you are either a) a totally normal American Russian troll bot, b) have your life's savings ridding on Trump's re-election, or c) are simply trying to own libs for fun. Fox news doesn't blow as much smoke up this dude ass as you do. Trump may win, for sure, but could you just give this hobby horse a rest? Please?!
