I just read about this.

Explosion in NY's Chelsea neighborhood injures 25
Melanie Eversley, USA TODAY 10:31 p.m. EDT September 17, 2016

NEW YORK —An explosion that injured at least 25 people rocked New York's Chelsea neighborhood Saturday night.

None of the injuries appeared to be life-threatening, the New York City Fire Department tweeted.

The explosion came just after 8:30 pm on 23rd Street between Sixth and Seventh Avenues, assistant commissioner for communication with the New York City Police Department J. Peter Donald tweeted.

The New York Police Counter-Terrorism unit has responded to the blast. Transit service in the area has been shut down, according to the New York Fire Department.

Several injured were transported to area hospitals, Donald said.

The cause of the blast remains unknown.

Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer said she understood that 26 people had been hurt, Five had been taken to area hospitals, she said. Mayor Bill de Blasio was expected to come to the scene, she added.

"This is a very orderly crime scene," she told NY1 television. "Everybody is coordinated, organized."

The explosion was in a dumpster outside a 14-story residence for the blind, the New York Post reported.

never been happier i was on long island at my bf's tonight and not in the city.

glad no one was seriously hurt. seeing that it was in a dumpster instead of the subway station (which is half a block away) makes me think it was someone trying to prove some weird point, and definitely not terrorism.

still scary nonetheless.

ya the fucked up part is how many gulf vets live in NY...i've seen so many clips of vets freaking out on trash day once back home because that was the standard operating procedure for roadside ied's over there (hide it in road side trash) and all the spouses and family members trying to calm them down with "that doesn't happen here" ya it does....that lone explosion is gonna fuck with the heads of sooo many vets...sucks

i bet they used the dumpster hoping it would turn it into shrapnel and injury/maim/kill far more then just the ied by itself

I read there was an explosion in New Jersey this morning too.

http://abcnews.go.com/US/explosion-jers ... d=42160249
An explosive device detonated in the New Jersey beach town of Seaside Park this morning along the route of a 5k charity race befitting U.S. Marines and sailors that drew thousands of runners, officials said.

The start of the run had been delayed due to the vast amount of participants, so there were not many people in the area when the explosion occurred. The race was cancelled after the blast. No suspects have been arrested in connection with the explosion, according to New Jersey Attorney General Christopher Porrino.

"We are taking every step to ensure the safety of the public and to determine who was responsible for this explosion, which occurred at a time when runners in this charity race could have been in harms way," Porrino said. "We are grateful that nobody was injured, but this is a serious act of violence against the people of New Jersey. We will not rest until we find the person or persons responsible."

Two officials briefed on the investigation said preliminary results indicate that the devices in the trash can packed enough explosive punch to cause serious injury to people if the race had actually started on time.

The device was set off with a timer, according to the officials.

One of the officials said the three devices actually appear to be three separate components of one device. The main component exploded but the two secondary components did not.

The FBI has taken the lead on the investigation, a spokesperson for the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office said.

Al Della Fave, a spokesman for the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office, said in an on-camera interview with News 12 New Jersey that the explosion came from multiple pipe bomb-type devices that were wired together.

"It's obvious it was meant to affect the run," Della Fave told News 12 New Jersey.

No additional devices have been found in the area, state police said.

The device exploded in a garbage can at approximately 9:35 a.m. ET along the route of a scheduled Semper Five race, the prosecutor's office said.

During a press briefing this afternoon, Della Fave told reporters that the explosive device or devices were contained to the one garbage pail and no other devices were found in any other areas of Seaside Park.
The race organizers said the run was cancelled because an unattended backpack was found in the area.

"Out of extreme precaution, this year's Seaside Semper Five has been canceled due to an unidentified suspicious backpack found at the race site," read a notice on the event's website.

Della Fave told ABC News that the incident was not "a prank" because the device was too sophisticated. Investigators are trying to determine a motive.

"We don't know what this individual's agenda is," Della Fave said.

Officials said runners were scheduled to pass by the area around the time of the blast, according to The Associated Press.

According to the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office, there are no reported injuries or damages to surrounding structures from the blast. The area was evacuated and placed on lockdown as bomb dogs searched for additional devices.

The Semper Five race benefits the MARSOC Foundation, which provides support to active duty and medically retired U.S. Marine Corps Forces, Special Operations Command (MARSOC) personnel and their families as well as to the families of marines and sailors who have lost their lives in service, according to its website/

Well, 100 years ago, a world-war started because some douche shot an arch-duke... It's probably good that bad shit can happen without dragging the entire world down with it. But I guess I wouldn't be surprised if things don't get very bad very soon.

Fuck, that's awful. It can surely be one of those life-changing experiences, thinking about what could've been.

http://thebulletin.org/timeline

We're still at the closest to doomsday we've been since 1984. It's also the closest level we've ever attained, except for that time they developed and tested the H-Bomb, 53 years ago.
Three minutes is too close. Far too close. We, the members of the Science and Security Board of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, want to be clear about our decision not to move the hands of the Doomsday Clock in 2016: That decision is not good news, but an expression of dismay that world leaders continue to fail to focus their efforts and the world’s attention on reducing the extreme danger posed by nuclear weapons and climate change. When we call these dangers existential, that is exactly what we mean: They threaten the very existence of civilization and therefore should be the first order of business for leaders who care about their constituents and their countries.
:tiphat: Just to be clear: this was published at the *beginning of 2016*.

Oh, there's also this: http://www.newstatesman.com/world/europ ... -ferdinand

I put the link to The Bulletin of Atomic Scientists up on my FB page a while ago. I fully anticipate a change. Today their email assails all cabinet appointees and that every civil sector is in peril.

There are some very strange things in regards to this attack last night. The two shooters wore ski masks when they shot up the place and went to great lengths to conceal their identities although they supposedly shouted "Alah Akbar" as they carried out the attack. One of the suspected shooters quickly turned himself in and expressed "regret" for his actions which seems really odd.

It's been speculated that this may either be retaliation if some in the Mosque were working with law enforcement or that it may be a Sunni vs Shia conflict starting to spill into Western countries. At least for now, it doesn't appear to be a predictable "Anti-Muslim" Nationalistic style hate crime.

Turns out the shooter is a young white male, far right Canadian Nationalist. The confusion originated because the person that called police and was first detained was a Moroccan Muslim who was in the mosque.

So, if you do the right thing, but are Moroccon, you might get detained. That's kinda disturbing

Quebec is a weird place. It's always been split about 50-50 sovereigntists / Canadian-loyalists. But this is deceptive -- Montreal is the largest city and also the most Anglophile/Anglophone. Outside of Montreal, it's almost entirely separatist, or, if not separatist, still very Quebecois-centric. People in small towns in Quebec don't see people from other countries, let alone other religions. They see everything outside of their traditions as a threat to their existence, to the point of engaging in terrorism (back in the 70s, anyway). So it's not surprising that young male Quebeckers would buy into this shit. It is surprising that one would manage to go and shoot up a mosque, because of the way our gun laws work... but there it is.
