Plenty of people know Trump's a complete idiot, but will still vote for him because of the dems failure to provide someone worth voting for. This "anyone but Trump" campaign can easily come back to bite them in the ass.
As of now I'd put my money on a Trump victory
it's amazing how low this bar's been set

It's not as though the republicans have provided someone worth voting for, despite the low bar.

Ranting on incomplete thoughts is very accessible/common amonsts the masses. People don't have the patience for complete sentences or just think complete sentences out the phonies or just plain don't care so it doesn't hurt him.
Mostly, I think, when the media/liberal left call him stupid. 50% of the voting population think you are calling THEM stupid. That is a very strong motivator to vote.
