We're having a family gathering next week. It may be more than eight, but fuck it....! :flip:
That is an extraordinarily bad idea. Please consider postponing it.
Are you feeling all right mockbee?! Wauw!
So people here are unambiguously not visiting with immediate family members for three weeks?
And of course not going outside where there may be people.

Are you also cordoning off from people in your household....?

Just curious.

Only 48 hours ago CDC was recommending keeping gatherings under 50 people....

Things are changing hourly at this point. Social distancing isn't just for strangers and friends; it's for everyone. If we all do it now, the summer might be salvageable. Otherwise... this could drag on into a fall resurgence and a really brutal decade.

Part of the problem is inconsistent messaging and the fact that each state is doing its own thing. Everyone needs to get on the same page regardless of how many cases each state thinks it has.

Another asinine tweet by the supreme leader:

This matters for Canada, because we didn't close our borders to Americans, and how you guys handle it will affect us. We have to treat you people in our hospitals!

More about the mixed messaging:

No Matter What Some Public Officials Say, the Message You Need to Hear Is “Stay Home”
Mixed messaging from all levels of government is putting Americans at risk and will speed the spread of the coronavirus. No matter what politicians say, public health experts agree. Stay home, even if you feel fine.

There are crisis management strategies in effect that may be contributing to the confusion in an effort to minimize panic. By ramping up restrictions bit by bit, even if quite quickly, they can try to acclimatize large populations to pretty draconian measures without risking severe push-back. But this has the side effect of making it harder for well-meaning obedient people to figure out exactly what is currently the best thing to do.

I have to say Cuomo seems to be one of the few who has his shit together and getting things done. I agree with him that there should be a national strategy. I watched his press conference yesterday and was impressed. He seems to be telling people how things really are, no bs. I don't know how he is normally as a governer, but he came across as trustworthy. I think people need some reassurance from their leaders now.

i said this on a Facebook comment on a friend's post and I'll repeat it here. I feel like I am in an episode of the Walking Dead searching for food and supplies.
Today I went to a grocery store near my mom's house to pick up a whole chicken or two to put in the freezer but they were sold out of all chicken!! There were some frozen nuggets and chicken wings, not too many left though. The entire butcher counter was empty!
We do have butcher shops as well, I may have to try my luck there, and as Panda said, pay a little more than what a supermarket would charge.

I don't have any meat. My freezer sucks. I have enough food for about 3 weeks. I plan to go to the store in a day or two for meat and produce. I imagine the rush will be over and stock will be back. And if not, no meat for a while....

It’s got to be worth it. You’ll pay extra, but you should get what you want and it’ll be better quality than the supermarkets. I’m going tomorrow morning to get some meat I can make 7/8 meals from beef and freeze from mince and 7/8 meals from chicken and freeze. My son taken a keen interest in cooking, so maybe it’ll be a good opportunity to go through some life skills whilst this is going on. :thumb:

Trump Defended Cuts to Public-Health Agencies, on Video
In a 2018 press briefing, the president said of public-health professionals, “I don’t like having thousands of people around when you don’t need them.”

“No,” Trump responded. “We can get money, we can increase staff—we know all the people. This is a question I asked the doctors before. Some of the people we cut, they haven’t used for many, many years, and if we have ever need them we can get them very, very quickly. And rather than spending the money—I’m a business person. I don’t like having thousands of people around when you don’t need them. When we need them, we can get them back very quickly.”

I tell you what hasn't out over here is all the Vegan stuff. It may kick give me a a kick up the arse to buy some Quorn and try some other vegan stuff.

This may be a dumb question but do you get local butchers in the states? The one by my work is amazing. They make their own sausages, pies, pasties, scotch eggs, the beef is to die for, the chicken breasts are huge, the gammon is amazing. Going to go up there today to stock up on meat to freeze. I don't think I've bought any meat from a supermarket in the last 6 months.
There are still butchers around but I would say way less prevalent than 20 years ago. Kind of a dying breed.

It's not like the old days where every corner had the neighborhood butcher. Maybe that's a good thing, eating less meat.

Rest assured Hype, my aunt has indefinitely postponed the family gathering. Also, I cancelled a meeting with a colleague that was planned for this evening.

Boss wanted me to come in Wednesday. I was able to talk him into letting me take PTO for the rest of the week, then plan to come in Monday. Hopefully by then things will have stabilized a bit, or if not, hopefully I'll be prohibited from going in. My job is not important and I'd rather stay cooped up at home like is recommended.

Starting to see subtle signs in growing numbers of people already cracking under the stress. Mostly online forums that have a political or "off topic" thread similar to ours where some individuals are just lashing out, running through all these "what if" scenarios, perseverating on the doom and gloom aspect and just making themselves more and more anxious.

It's like especially here in the US, no one has ever faced a Nationwide event of this type and this scale with such far reaching yet as-unknown ramifications. For most of us, 9/11 and later, the recession was the last really big event to have a serious existential affect on our lives but to be honest, at least 9/11 was a day long crisis and then it was done leaving the country to deal with the after affects. This is a slow burn, months long (if not longer) unfolding crisis that presents a lot of day to day fear of getting sick, maybe dying, the uncertainty of maintaining essentials for home and family for an unknown duration, the uncertainty of having a job to go back to, of maybe losing everything. Looking back years from now, it will be regarded as a major social experiment how we in a society where most had or have at least a comfortable life with plenty of superficial entitlements, started to lose their grip within days because.....?
