2020 US Racial/Political Protests and Riots

I figure this is as good a thread as any for the likely continuing run of protests and riots we'll be having this year.

In some ways, this weekend is turning out as bad as the 1992 Rodney King-inspired riots, maybe more so because it's happening in several major cities across the entire country. At the nearby Huntington Beach Pier and especially Long Beach, stores and malls are being looted by big crowds, Santa Monica getting hit hard too with some buildings being set on fire. Pretty much most of SoCal is now under a 6pm-6am curfew but the assholes who've hijacked what should have been peaceful protests for a legitimate cause aren't into that. And this is just here - other states are dealing with this too. And there's been an absolute failure of leadership from the local to state to Trump himself through this. Maybe it's just me, but there's just a really weird vibe in the air that I don't recall even during the '92 rioting, as if people just don't give a fuck anymore and are looking for any excuse to go full tilt anarchy.

I wouldn't have thought it possible just a few months ago, but between the whole CV-19 shit and now this, I think socially, we're seeing this country literally disintegrating in real time.

There's also that thing about the sitting president being a corrupt, textbook narcissist piece of shit that Republicans in the senate united to protect from full impeachment, despite clear evidence of wrongdoing. When it's obvious that "democracy" no longer exists, the masses start to get a little antsy.

“Unemployment is gasoline, and then abuse of power is the match,” one protester said after looters smashed the windows of a Duane Reade drugstore in Lower Manhattan.

“In the right circumstances, ka-boom. People don’t have anything to lose,” he said. “‘If a guy can get away with murdering a guy, I’m pretty sure I can get away with stealing an iPhone’ is the attitude.”

These are centuries old intractable problems bubbling to the surface.... heightened by close to 20% unemployment and 40% unemployment for service workers. Minneapolis is a very liberal city on par with SF and Portland, with decades of liberal policies/minorities on city council/police review boards/liberal immigration policies/robust city wide health insurance; yet it's window dressing for the strife that still occurs among minority and poor white communities.

We got bigger problems on the horizon than we can even comprehend. :noclue: :balls:

The most liberal cities and towns in the Midwest all hide a ton of racism directly underneath the veneer of college-town idylls.

Madison, WI, one of my favourite places on earth, is somehow one of the most liberal and most racist places I've ever been: https://socialistworker.org/2013/10/31/ ... -in-the-us

My only one-on-one experience with black people in Madison was a woman frantically trying to find the courthouse (on foot). This is insane:
More than 74 percent of Black children live under the poverty level as opposed to just 5.5 percent of white children. The report suggested "that this 13 to 1 disparity ratio may constitute one of the widest Black/white child poverty gaps that the Census Surveys reported for any jurisdiction in the nation."

I guess any ol' excuse will do when it comes to animal behavior.

grabbing a tv is just a power grab by the powerless (for the most part) it's the standard playbook for generations...what else do you expect? Kids hear the stories of the la riots...now is their turn...it's expected to me

For every looting twat there’s thousands of people who either can’t afford to eat and/or are getting into debt to avoid dying. It’s a desperate situation that needs far more attention than a company losing a bit of stock that might even be insured anyway.

People are getting shot in the face with rubber bullets. In time, I’d bet there will be dozens of people losing their eyes.

Uh... no. That's a ridiculous trivializing of what happened. it's more like: "The government is literally killing us and protecting those who kill us, so we must protest." -- and some of that may turn into looting and vandalism, but as it turns out there are reports that there are roving gangs of white supremacists who are showing up at Minneapolis/St. Paul protests and breaking shit, but protestors are getting blamed:

https://www.kare11.com/article/news/loc ... 066cbd0fc8
11:16 p.m.

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey says some of the people who have been causing violence in the Twin Cities are local, but officials are seeing a "very organized system" and know that some people are coming in from out of state.

"We have had reports of outside agitators," he said. "Yes there are reports of white supremacist organizations out there and we're looking into all of it."

"There are people out there right now in our city that are seeking to not just cause trouble, but wreck our city," he said.

The police are belligerents, and they're violating basic norms of conflict zones:

I wasn't there but this has a very 1968 US political and social state of affairs to it.......

95% of whites will never concede "law and order" for racial justice. Trump is on the winning side unfortunately.
:wavesad:

Liberal cities in liberal states are quite racist, in very surreptitious ways. When the tony good life is threatened by strife - frowny faces, flowery statements and a realignment of the deck chairs is all you're going to get.

:noclue:

As for Obama, he was not seen as a threat and rewarded by white and black voters. Also, subsequently did little for the minority communities...

I don't think any real improvement for minority communities should be expected from politicians who aren't on the left side of the spectrum. Obama wasn't and Biden isn't, despite what Fox News say. They're only not as right-leaning as others. They are still stalwarts of the neo-liberal model, which demands keeping the current (and deeply unequal) state of affairs. The difference is that right extremists aim at going even further and deepening inequality. Which is why neo-liberal stalwarts such as Obama and Biden are still 'better' or 'more humane' than people like Trump or (the Chilean president) Piñera.

It matters that you vote. If you lean towards the right, you can vote for Biden and sleep easy knowing that he is faaar from being a Communist. He will keep everything as balanced as the capitalist model demands: people nearing despair, but living well enough, so you can keep taxes law and regulate almost nothing. If you lean towards the left, you can vote for Biden and do what you must: prevent fascism to keep destroying your country and killing your people.

Neither of them will significantly improve life for minorities. Your country and mine are at least one *real* leftist president away from that.
