Eric leaves NIN or "the breakdown of nyrexall"

I like Closer. Especially its video. It’s just been played to death and not one of my favorites.

Yeah, that's a huge turn-off for me as well. Done well, I don't have a problem with sampled live drums looped or pieced together to make a rhythm track but the level Trent took it to on this album completely alienates me as a listener.Matz wrote:that's one of the things I really miss, it's a bit too electroniccreep wrote:are there any live drums on the album. the only songs i heard didn't have any. are other nin albums like this?

I'm replacing number eight on my list with "We're In This Together". That guitar overdrive/piano outro during the final two minutes is one of my favorite parts on that entire album.
I've never understood the fan fascination with TPD. To me, that's one of his worst songs ever.

People commenting on things like the drums, try doing what we used to do when we bought a physical copy of music and listen to it more than once before forming an opinion.
I think every single album/ band I truly love was in some way a challenge to listen to/ understand. Nowadays, as music is so disposable, it's just "meh, I don't like the drums, fucking piece of shit, never gonna listen to that again..."

I'm really liking Hesitation Marks. It has a few duds, most notably Came Back Haunted, Disappointed and Running (Running is just completely fucking useless - one of those songs that I'm truly befuddled by).
But for the most part, I really like the imbalance of it - the songs are kind of sparse, but have lots of unexpected flourishes and neat twists. Nothing mindblowing, but it's a sound I like. Lyrically, the man's been treading water for a long time, but he's never been a strong or interesting lyricist, so the repetitive lyrical themes don't bother me.
Favorites so far: Find My Way, All Time Low, Satellite, Various Methods of Escape, In Two
And, since others are doing it:
1. Wish
2. In This Twilight
3. Happiness in Slavery
4. Ruiner
5. Sanctified
6. The Good Soldier
7. Zero-Sum
8. The Great Below
9. Something I Can Never Have
10. All the Love in the World

I know I’ll love it, just by the praise and the gripes it’s receiving. I still listen to Ghosts, The Social Network and TGWTDT all the time, almost always at night.
Nothing he does disappoints me, and until he drops a fucking hip-hop album with Little Wayne and Drake, I doubt anything ever will. Hesitation Marks will be played to the same degree as TDS, PHM and With_Teeth in my household. The next seven days can’t go by fast enough.
I just have an affinity for it. The songs were there at a time when a lot of other things weren't.
1. TDS
2. PHM
3. Year Zero
4. WT/The Fragile (depends on my mood)
5. Still
6. Broken
7. The Slip
8. Ghosts
I'm fairly certain that once I listen to HM a few times, it will easily jump to number 3 on that list.
Albums:
1. The Fragile
2. TDS
3. With_Teeth
4. Year Zero
5. Broken
6. PHM
7. The Slip
8. Still
9. Ghosts
10. Hesitation Marks
Songs:
1. We're In This Together
2. The Fragile
3. And All That Could Have Been
3. In This Twilight
4. Sunspots
5. Heresy
6. Home
7. The Way Out is Through
8. La Mer
9. All The Love in the World
10. The Hand That Feeds
Re: Eric leaves NIN or "the breakdown of nyrexall"
I’m guessing Various Methods of Escape is the ballad torchbearer on HM? A lot of people are describing it as “beautiful”, “aching”, “sublime”, etc.

i can't name a single album i hated that grew on me after a bunch of listens...some that were good that grew on me....some that were ok that after a bunch became good...but never something i hated...and trust me when i was a kid i'd force feed myself on a record i blew money on and didn't like

Anyone that ranks anything post The Fragile above anything pre The Fragile is either 12 or a crack head.

Re: Eric leaves NIN or "the breakdown of nyrexall"
I'm 39 and have never done crack. Been listening to NIN since 1990.
My fav NIN albums are Pretty Hate Machine and Year Zero. I love some songs on The Downward Spiral while dislike some others (namely Piggy, Heresy, and Reptile). I suppose I feel the same way about The Fragile; there are great songs that are far better than anything on the other records...but also some crud far worse than on the other records (in my opinion). The lows on TDS and Fragile are just too clichéd. PHM and YZ just work better for me as whole albums.
Don't get me wrong, I think TDS and Fragile are very good albums. But I also think they buckle under the weight of excess and self indulgence at times. It's just a preference in style; some people favour Zeppelin I, other people favour Physical Graffiti.
P.S. I haven't listened to TDS in over 10 years and have never listened to Fragile in one sitting.

It's incredibly ironic that such a post would be akin to the mentality of a 12 year old. ITT we find out Tyler doesn't know who New Order is.
It sounds like Jimmy Eat World.
It is so bad.

Entertainment Weekly is some sort of bible with all the right answers that we all have to adhere to, is that what you're saying?
I can't really believe Trent's getting that great review everywhere, I think he deserves a 2,8/5 or something. Lots of fans seem not that pleased though

Nothing of the sort; why would you think that?Matz wrote:Entertainment Weekly is some sort of bible with all the right answers that we all have to adhere to, is that what you're saying?
My point is that I'm not the only one who hears New Order in "Everything"...and that I've heard New Order many times before (despite what Hoka wants to tell himself).
The only place where I have read that this song sounds like Jimmy Eat World is here.
