I've had the Pier 48 show on bootleg for well over 15 years now, but it will still be nice to have it officially. The fans have been screaming for this for years, so it was kind of a no-brainer. I remember watching it on MTV 20 years ago and it was apparent that Nirvana was at the top of their game. Cypress Hill opened that show, if I remember correctly.

I'm actually intrigued to hear what a 2013 mix of In Utero will sound like :noclue:
I'm pretty sure the openers were Cypress Hill and The Breeders. It was supposed to be a double bill with Pearl Jam.

The 2013 mix was orchestrated predominantly by Albini and Novoselic, as well as Grohl and Smear. Basically it's an "alternative" cut of the album; it is to include different versions of the songs. For example, a track with alternate lyrics, a different guitar solo, the cello removed...that sort of thing. Kind of like what they have done with The Doors stuff in recent years or the Let It Be...Naked album.

Yeah, it's fucking ridiculous. It was the same thing with the Nevermind box set (which I downloaded and then bought the DVD separately). Amazon is currently selling that one for $140 (still insane).

If you shop around and maybe be patient, you can get these massive box sets for around $80. At the very least, places like Best Buy knock about 20 - 30% off the first week it's on sale, and often these kind of releases show up at places like Costco after the holidays discounted by 50%. That's how I got the three Pink Floyd Immersion box sets, I just waited 'til they showed up at Costco and bought 'em for $69 each.

And of course, there's eBay.

I'm getting the box set from Soundstagedirect for $99 when it's released :noclue:

Listened to 'In Utero' last night; it sounds as awesome and as vital as it did 20 years ago when I first bought it. Still one of my favorite albums ever.

September is going to be one hell of a month. New NIN, new Mazzy Star, and the 'In Utero' box set!!1

I almost bought the box set today but realized that instead of shelling out $120 - $160+, I could just get the 2 disc cd "Deluxe Edition" which has all the audio tracks and the live dvd separately for about $45 total and have all the material off the box set except the live cd which is just an audio-only version of the dvd and the book(let).

Hey panda I know you probably own more cd's than anyone on here, so i'm curious whats your favorite box-set? I'm asking because a lot of them dont seem to offer much if youve already been buying their music when it first came out.

Hmm, tough one. There's a few box sets I bought when the band remastered their entire catalog and put out all their studio stuff at once - Led Zep, The Doors and The Beatles are three outstanding box sets that cover the respective band's complete studio work that I love.

Then there's those box sets which focus on rarer stuff like B-sides, unreleased tunes, demoes, etc - of those, I highly rank The Cults' "Rare Cult" 7 disc set, The Cure's "Join The Dots" and The Jesus and Mary Chain's "The Power of Negative Thinking."

Lastly, the latest trend, which is single album box sets with tons of extras, I'd probably say U2's "Achtung Baby" and the three Pink Floyd Immersion box sets as my favorites.

even tho much like surfer rosa, in utero is a classic, i am not a fan of steve albini's drum sounds. Sounds like whacking cardboard. My fav is incesticide. Not as raw and under produced as bleach, but not as over produced as nevermind and no fucked up drums like in utero. the songs on incesticide are more punky and fun too. the nirvana box set had a few gems in it too, but a lot of filler too. join the dots would have been better if i didn't already have most everything on it, same with cabinet of curiosity.

On a side note other albums I skipped school to buy and listen to on the release date: Blood Sugar Sex Magic, Metallica's Black album, NIN the second release (the Broken EP???), Porno for Pyros (first album), and yep I can admit it...Use Your Illusion... :hehe:
What do you mean you skipped school? You blew off a whole day of high school all those days just to buy a cd? How did u get away with it?
I did the same thing a couple of times, good times!
