I'll give you a full rundown later but it was ok: 7.5/10. Too many singles, no b-sides, too many people "being scene".... But: three hour show, Bananfishbones, Jupiter Crash, Want, One Hundred Years. Plus, it was The Cure so yeah......

Great song choices if you have to pick 5 with Shake Dog Shake being my favorite Cure song. :thumb:

Great that RS dedicated SDS to Andy Anderson.

not super sure that Pearl (ex-Porl) Thompson should have tweeted this though... There's apparently some bad blood between Pearl and RS but geez.... keep your shit to yourself...

Pearl's comment comes off like sour grapes given there are rumours around about the reasons for Porl "leaving" the band in 2009, and apparently it wasn't "creative differences", rather personal family strife caused by Porl's on tour behaviour.

Add to that the manner in which Roger and Perry were reportedly fired in 2004 to make way for Porl, and it's all a bit tense. Yes Roger is back now, and has been since 2011, but watch the acceptance speech, Perry whilst not outwardly hostile looking, does not look happy to be up there, and in the red carpet interview he mentions he's surprised about who was and wasn't inducted. I don't think it's all unicorns and rainbows in Cure-land.

What didn't you like about it?

They chose songs to appeal to a mass audience made catering to die-hard and casual fans. Sure, they only played songs released up until 1989 but they didn't stick playing to one brand of fan.

Shake Dog Shake (1984) was not only a tribute to the late Andy Anderson, but a fan favourite. Jason smashed the drums out of the park, and Simon's bass was on point. I would argue that the mix was too keyboard heavy, and since maybe before 2005, all the way to now, the guitars aren't jangly enough, and are lost in the mix a bit compared to the original 1984 versions, but this could be in part down to the choice of guitars used as well as the mix. Hard to say. Schecters are definitely not as jangly as the Fenders and that odd tear-drop shaped guitar Robert used back then. This version really powered on through and was rockier than the original versions. Robert even got all the lyrics, and more importantly especially of late, the vocal melody right all the way thru.... (don't start me on that)

A Forest (1980) was another one for the die-hards, but also for the rest of you. Granted, it wasn't the eighteen minute version from May 3rd 1992 (possibly the greatest version of A Forest ever), but hey, they were on limited stage time so we had to make do with six or eight minutes. Simon's bass was thundering along nicely all the way thru and I think I could even hear Reeves in the mix...hahah no, I couldn't...

Lovesong (1989) a huge single in the USA when Disintegration was released, and probably picked just for all the septics to feel at home. It was on point apart from one vocal melody he got wrong. So points off for that.

Just Like Heaven (1987) Reeves absolutely nailed the climbing guitar melody up and down the neck, and the mix was right including the acoustic guitar. I think originally RS played a 12 string acoustic but nowadays he uses only that black and white star acoustic. Vocal melodies spot on, and keyboards mixed correctly. A song definitely chosen for the non-rabid fans.

Boys Don't Cry (1979) Their second single, and an acceptable choice, though I would have preferred "Killing An Arab", for many reasons. BDC was OK get you non-CUREFREAKS up and dancing and singing along. Mix was perfect, Roger's tambourine was hilarious, and Reeves nailed the second guitar melody.

At the end of the video linked below, you can see the VIP seated area almost all up and dancing, then at the very end, the crows in the stands are all standing.

1984 show with Shake Dog Shake in its original form

And before you say "oh but you're always gonna say they shit roses", I say not true. There are songs of theirs I don't like, and I have been moaning about the 2005-2016 versions of the band and how they play whole or certain parts of some songs for aaages....

Have a listen to the awful version of Shake Dog Shake from Festival 2005. Porl's guitar is just a bit of distortion and delay or some other echo or decay. 4Cure was the worst.

So... I agreed with Pearl that the performance was bad, and you focused mostly on the song choices, which have nothing to do with the performance. In your own description you admit a number of flaws/problems/weak points. Whether or not those are enough to call the performance as a whole bad is kind of subjective. For me, it was a lackluster performance. In fact, I suspect they played poorly on purpose, given RS's disdain for the HoF in the first place. It was boring. They didn't look like a band.

I saw them in 2004 for the Curiosa festival and they were incredible. A few years later I saw them from the floor in an arena show and they were equally amazing.

Maybe 40 years is long enough.

i thought trent gave a great speech and robert is always pretty amusing .. i didn't love the performance but it was some bootleg camera video .. seemed a little slow and tired .. it's weird to see them all so close together .. like seeing the original beatles or whatever .. like the wings aren't the same thing ... and the band always looks more right with the older less studio musician guys that helped shape those classic records .. kinda bums me out that they didn't let the other guys play .. it would have been cool to start out with the original trio on an early song .. add members as they hit the songs they worked on .. kinda like stop making sense.. end with out of this world with the new guys .. it will probably sound better when the hof special comes out and it gets mixed good .. i mean i am not a fan of hot hot hot but it would be funny if robert went full george clinton on that funky tune and had like everybody up there .. like 7 guitars .. cmon its the roh hall o fame .. gotta jam with yer old mates .. or have siouxie come out and sing a tune with them .. seemed like just another gig for the band but i guess that is ok .. super excited for the new depressing mopey album .. and disingtegration tour with b sides played .. fear of ghosts would do me in if i got to hear that live .. :boobs:  :boobs:

Pearl’s comment said nothing about performance quality, it said “tribute band”. So “not the real thing”. Why not the real thing? Is it because Pearl’s not in it anymore or because they played old songs? Who knows... maybe Pearl is old and bitter or maybe Pearl was booted unfairly. I guess only a handful will ever really know.

You didn’t like it? Oh well, sucks for you I guess. I thought the performance was good for the most part ( I have seen and heard some dreadful and spectacular ones across the years of bootlegged and in person shows) and people played their respective parts well and correctly, musically-speaking.

Simon always bounds around, Reeves and Roger are pretty much statues and Robert is always the way he was that night.

Trev, they will def do FoG live at Vivid.

I really like Pearl. I follow him on IG. He puts up a lot of artwork mainly. He lives out in Joshua Tree...a true iconoclast. I loved him in the band. Though I thought I was a big Cure fan until I read some of the detailed posts, I thought this gig was excellent with the exception of the drums on Heaven. The studio's version tom tom work is essential to this tune, just as the cymbal work. So, unless the mix was horrible the drum arrangement choices were off. I also can understand the bitterness. They reached some summits with him.

They did, I’m not sold on his work in 4:13 Dream though. Overall the arrangements on a lot of the songs felt samey samey. My initial reaction to it was “The Porl widdly-widdly Show” but this has mellowed somewhat after repeated listens. He is an excellent musician and artist though. No denying it. I prefer The Cure with him in it but with Roger or Perry on keys/guitar too.
