The voice must be the hinge for you. The difference between the Pixies and the Breeders is a hair's length. The song structures map onto each other with great consistency. Breeders just don't have FB singing.

I've been listening to these 2 shows and they sound great (especially if u turn up the treble).

http://www.guitars101.com/forums/f90/pi ... ixies+2013

Lots of extra new tunes that I like better than most of the ep1 songs and the ep1 songs sound pretty good too. Kim Deal is still very missed but NuKim is doing pretty good. Hearing the new songs really brings home how great Joey Santiago is. Even if Black Francis lyrics aren't exactly improving, listening to Joey makes up for it. The new songs seem like the logical next step after Trompe Le Monde. Trompe was getting a bit cheezy for my Pixies stew tho it did contain a few gems. I would love to hear the new line up try The Navaho Knows instead of say a Head On or Subbacultcha.

I read they recorded 60 new tunes. The great thing about Black Francis is that if he says he recorded 60 new tunes .. he probably did .. unlike Perry's 'hardblower' approach. And with Francis, he is still good for a few great songs. Currently digging In Heaven / Andro Queen, What Goes Boom, Silver Snail, Blue Eyed Hexe, Greens and Blues and Indi Cindy. The Quieter songs remind me of Bossanova a little and the louder ones definately have that Trompe feel, especially reminding me of the Jeffrey with one F tune.

I would love if Perry took the Pixie approach of playing long sets with changing up the setlist a lot. Even with NuKim the variety makes it all super enjoyable.

Highly Recommended listening!

I kinda like all the new stuff, except maybe bagboy. The new tunes remind me of Teenager of the Year era Frank Black, and maybe the subpar Trompe Le Monde era Pixies. Not quite the Pixies without Kim or at least a chick singing. Much better than fast man raider man era Frank, which almost made me give up on the guy. Both ep's are pretty solid for what they are. Having Joey around really gives it that extra something special. Respectable would sum it up best. Androqueen, Greens and Blues and Blue Eyed Hexe are all solid tunes. Listening to VU 'the gift' makes me think maybe Subbacultcha was written to sound like "the gift". It was written right around when that other song Levitate Me was written, which states "I wanna be a singer like lou reed", and "the gift" is pretty much the same riff.

Good summary. Except, as a late comer to the Pixies I always loved Trompe Le Monde. I had no idea it was so disliked until I started reading more and more about them. It was like when I got in to Porno and Jane's right as Porno was doing their thing and hearing Jane's fans lamenting how far Perry had fallen. I was confused because I loved Porno. Over the years I've come to understand of course how OG Jane's fans might not have dug P4P, but I still love 'em maybe just as much as Jane's.

Same here.. Trompe's my favorite Pixies album, no question. And yeah, I had sorta written them off with Bagboy and Kim leaving, but I've really liked both EPs.

as a pixes fan from the start trompe is def my least favorite...the whole sci fi feel just didn't do it for me as a whole...a couple great tunes off it but as a whole my least fav...and i don't jut like the ealy stuff best...i mean i do but bossanova is fucking amazing sauce...used to never be able to say who i liked more jane's or the pixies...while i still have zero knocks aginst eithers old catalogs...the way jane's have crumbled over the last 20 years make me put the pixies a notch higher....as for porno i always felt like ns and rit were A+ records with pronos s/t being a solid A for me...while GGU fell really far for me...i also think the pixies is more timeless listening to it now...while ns sounds dated and i hate the broken glass drum triggers...still and forever will love love love old pixies and jane's and aisde from BOB nobody will ever hold that spot in my heart like those bands

i used to always feel no eric=no jane's, no kim=no pixies....but with these ep's for me as long as charles and joey are together it works for me...where jane's really lacks without avery to the point of fail

I almost want to call that not really the Pixies... but it's far more the Pixies than 3/4 of Jane's Addiction is Jane's Addiction. I love that violin.
