What was the first record you ever bought?

#1 Post by Artemis » Sat Aug 27, 2011 4:28 pm

Gifts you received don't count, but records you actually went to the record shop to buy on your own(with your parents is okay too).

45s don't count. That would be a seperate thread.

For the younger ones, what was your first CD.

Mine was Shaun Cassidy.I was about 9 or 10.

A classic. Not their best album by a long shot, but always loved the energy of it.

First record I ever bought myself was probably a Kiss record. I loved them when I was a kid. My mom had a great record collection though so I had tons of stuff to listen to for as long as I can remember.

I actually bought 3 records the first day I bought any albums.

This was around the Christmas holiday season of '75 and I had just bought one of those big, clunky "all-in-one" record/cassette tape/am/fm radio stereos with a set of big speakers all in the fake wood finish after saving a few hundred bucks from my first "real" job working in a trucking warehouse. I needed something to play on it so I went to the local chain record store Licorice Pizza and pretty much grabbed the three top selling rock albums of the time. Queen's Night at the Opera, Led Zep's Physical Graffiti and Fleetwood Mac's self title album which were all fairly recent releases at the time.

It really took several years before I got any decent musical taste, so I often loaded up on some pretty bad junk even for the time (lotsa Styx, Eagles, Elton John, Wings, etc). I didn't get a clue until I started catching live shows.

My brother and I pooled our money together and bought two albums. Twisted Sister Stay Hungry and Prince Purple Rain on cassette. First CD was...
hmmm let me think... oh yeah... Jane's Addiction Nothing's Shocking.

I got on the CD bandwagon within months of the format's introduction to consumers in 1983. I paid nearly 1K for a Denon cd player (that lasted a whopping 2 years, so much for being an early adopter, lol!) and I had already bought a number of the first cds on the market including several David Bowie titles and Van Halen's Diver Down album.

There was maybe about 20 titles available at the time and most music stores had them displayed in glass cases like they were precious jewels (they were sold in clear plastic blister packs before they went to the cardboard long box) and they averaged about $15 each (which was a lot in '83 for a single album).

I listened to this double LP all the time on my red plastic 70s clamshell record player, which was basically a toy record player for kids. I got the record at a bargain store called Building 19. They sell stuff that's been in fire-damaged or flooded warehouses and stuff like that. Filthy mess of a place, and you usually feel like you need a shower after you've been to one of their stores.

I've got an entire Disco Duck LP. It's got a picture of the disco duck in space on the cover, and inside it's got the disco duck song, and then the duck DJs the whole album, which is songs like "How Deep Is Your Love," "We Will Rock You," and "(Love Is) Thicker Than Water." :lolol:
