Sorry to hear you missed out on Led Zeppelin, but come on, you saw Guns N Roses' ride to fame ... You were walking the LA streets when something was boiling in the 80's. (Guns N Roses, Jane's Addiction, ...) Must be an exciting time and place

Since I'm most jealous about all these early Guns shows, could you share some more info about those?
Sure.

First time I saw Guns n' Roses was when they opened for The Lords Of The New Church at a crappy little club in Long Beach called Fenders in '86 before they put out the first live EP. I had no idea who they were at the time and I think they were unbilled. Axl was in his glam phase looking like an even gayer version of Michael Monroe (the band was hugely influenced by Hanoi Rocks at the time) and while there was a few obviously strong songs in the set, the band put on what I'd consider one of the most impressive trainwrecks of a show I'd ever seen up to that time. At times, no one was playing in time with each other and no one seemed to be playing in the same key. It was often a wall of noise with Axl buried in the mix. Duff was stumbling wasted and he passed out during the last song - just all the sudden fell back unconscious in a heap in front of his rig and the band didn't even pause to see what was up with the guy. A roadie dragged him offstage as they finished the song like it was a comedy skit.

After Appetite For Destruction came out though, they changed big time and every show I saw them do during that 2 year spread (opening for The Cult, Aerosmith and headlining in a theater) was really solid to excellent. The gig opening for The Cult in early '87 was pretty cool as they had half the Long Beach Arena curtained off so the stage was actually at the mid-point of the arena so it was a lot smaller and more intimate then a typical arena show. It was amazing how tight they were compared to the Fenders show, they had really upped their game. The only downside was the power cut during their encore.

GnR was quickly becoming a huge band and they headlined about 5 shows around the 1987 Christmas break at Perkins Palace. Most people going to these shows knew GnR was going to be playing arenas next time they toured. The show was basically the same as the well known NYC Ritz club show that was later endlessly broadcast on MTV at the time however drummer Steven Adler had fucked up his hand so they had the drummer for Cinderella subbing for him. They premiered "Used To Love Her" at this show.

The 1988 Aerosmith gig at the Pacific Amphitheater was a lot of fun. It was the last show of Aerosmith's comeback "Permanent Vacation" tour and one of the last GnR shows of their tour. During "Welcome To The Jungle," several members of Aerosmith came on stage dressed as gorillas swinging from the lighting rig and throwing bananas at the band. By this time, the "Lies" EP was out and they were playing "Patience" much to the squealing delight of the girls. Axl, Slash and Izzy joined Aerosmith during Aerosmith's encore to play "Mama Kin."

The cracks started appearing when I saw them open for The Rolling Stones 10/21/89 which was the last time I saw the original lineup. This was the show were Axl ranted through the set about drug use in the band and possibly breaking up the band. My soon to be ex-girlfriend and I had great seats on the field way up front at the LA Coliseum and during the late afternoon set by Living Colour, Slash was wandering around in what appeared to be a drunken stupor in our section on the floor until security whisked him away when a lot of fans started mobbing him.

The next time I saw GnR was at the LA Forum 8/3/91 in mid-Summer right before the Illusion albums (Izzy was still in the band) came out and from what I understand, it was the longest show the band ever played at over 3 1/2 hours and close to 40 songs. Because they didn't even start until well after midnight hours after Skid Row had done their opening set, people were booing and yelling "bullshit" until GnR came on. By about the last third of the show, about half the audience had left because it was so late. I remember getting home from the show as the sun was coming up.

I saw them again over a year later during the Metallica/GnR tour at the LA Coliseum and that was a terrible show. This was just a week or two after James Hetfield had been fried by onstage pyro and his arm was in a cast and a roadie was playing his guitar parts but Metallica was still excellent. Following both Motorhead *and* Metallica is not an ideal situation for any band but it was like GnR didn't even try. The band had all these backup singers, Izzy was gone, and the set dragged like nobody's business and of course, Axl was in a whiny mood.

The last time I saw them was during the "scab" era just before Christmas of '06 on a day-of-show whim at The Universal Amphitheater and that was a surprisingly good and very long show. This after Bumblefoot replaced Buckethead on guitar. Izzy joined the band for about 1/3rd of the very long set which was pretty much the entire AFD album and about 8 Illusion era tunes and a few of the better Chinese Democracy tunes. Another highlight was the backdrop behind the keyboard and drum setup catching fire mid-show from the pyro stopping the show for a few minutes.

This is what I could dig out last night. The Robbie Williams Gig was with an old girlfriend....in fact we'd split up a few weeks before the gig but still went with friends anyway and didn't speak to each other  There are loads post 2009 but I didn't have time.

The Jane's ticket was from 2003. I had a decent 5 minute chat with Stephen after the show and Perry was on top form too to be fair (no Etty). He was loving the attention and posed for quite a few photos. Dave was the last to come out and was as miserable as sin and signed my ticket on the other side, the twat.

Bandit! Cool collection of shows. Definitely more of a British slice of pop culture. And to have seen Happy Mondays or Black Grape when you did. Wow.

Also noticed Catatonia. I was in Cardiff when their x files song was on the radio. Would love a story about either Happy Mondays or Black Grape.

I was at University in Sheffield (1990-1993) when the whole Indie thing kicked off big time. I know it had been bouncing around in Manchester from the mid - late 80's but in the UK I was in the right place at the right time. I was always more of a Charlatans/Stone Roses fan to the Happy Mondays when I was 17/18 but the City Hall gig was when they were pretty damn big at the time and I was a couple of years older. The only thing I remember from that gig is the amount of drugs people were on (on a school night) and how good Rowetta's voice was. There didn't seem to be any policing of drugs at all at the gig and pretty much whichever bar you went to in the venue, everyones eyeballs were like dustbin lids. This is when you were paying £10 - £15 for ecstacy. But it was always good shit. I also wondered what the hell Bez was supposed to be doing apart from 'jeeing' up the crowd. I saw Bez a year late in Dry 201 bar in Manchester one Saturday afternoon. He looked fucked then as welpool in ml.

Black Grape were BRILLIANT. So, so tight, and I seem to remember the sound being fantastic. Kermit, the black guy was immense and more of a 'front man' to Shaun Ryder. It was a glorious evening that day too and myself and my friend were close to the front pretty much bouncing up and down all gig and left there soaking. They didn't play any Mondays songs either but no one cared, It's Great When you're Straight is a wicked album.

About 3 years later in 1999, I actually saw Shaun, Rowetta and a load of others were playing pool in my local. They must've been recording at Rich Bitch studios just across the road (which has now since moved). I said hello to him as he walked out (a bit awestruck) and he said "Y'ALRIGGGHT MATE' in this drunken Manc drawl.

I would have given my right arm to have been around the LA scene in the 80's like Pandemonium was. Lots of great bands I've never seen in venues I've only read about. I've never been to LA either....maybe one day.

This is my most precious ticket stub.
The art work on the ticket is by a company called Timorous Beasties out of Glasgow.

On the on-sale date I was unsuccessful to get a ticket for any of the 22 dates. Actually, they had "hospitality tickets" for £425 that included a dinner before the show, glass of champagne and a program, but I didn't want to spend that much money on a ticket. A few months later, someone on one of the Kate Bush forums mentioned that tickets were available on the Eventim ticket site. I checked it out and sure enough there were a few and I snagged one. I ended up making a holiday around the concert. I spent a few weeks in London and a few days in Paris.

The artwork is fitting, and seems reminiscent of 4AD artwork on record sleeves by 23 Envelope

Okay here's some pics of stubs. It was difficult to photograph so that the printing was clear as some have faded over time. I haven't saved all my but my earliest go back to 1981.

I tried to organize in piles by years.

I'm jealous of all you folks with your careful lists of shows and ticket stubs.

I can probably sit down and remember most of the shows I saw from my 1st in 1989 (REM) through the 90's pretty well.

But, from when I started working shows for promoters in 2001 through 2011 when I went to work at my current job, it's really a blur. I just threw out a ton of pay stubs that might have helped, but probably never would get around to doing a proper spread sheet.

My rough estimate would put my total shows for that ten year period at about 1000 different show dates. I can't really break it down by band's because of festivals and such...

Of course, a not insignificant number of shows I worked I never saw much of the performance...

More often than not these days, I can't even be bothered to try...

Would you consider selling the Guns N’ Roses ticket from 88 at the Amphitheatre? Would pay top $$ would mean a lot to this guy!
Thanks again

Would you consider selling the Guns N’ Roses ticket from 88 at the Amphitheatre? Would pay top $$ would mean a lot to this guy!
Thanks again
That ticket and a few others that I posted in this thread are among the handful of items that are still in my possession from the times I spent out with my cousin who passed away in 1996, so each of them mean a lot to me for that reason.

It doesn't matter to me how much $$ you may offer, I will always pass on it.

Sorry

Doing a bit of catch up here, so sorry for the late reply....

The first Pretenders show I saw back in '81 with the original line-up at the Santa Monica Civic was by far the best show of the few I've seen over the years. They were supporting the 2nd album so it was basically the best stuff the original lineup did which was much of the 1st album, songs off the EP and the 2nd album. The Santa Monica Civic was a fun place to catch shows, basically a big concrete auditorium with bleachers in the back. They broadcast that show live on the radio and it's been released in various configurations the last couple decades.

The next time I saw them was in '83 at the US Festival after guitarist Honeyman-Scott and bass player OD'd and this was one of their first shows with a new line-up. Although Chrissy had some serious emotion singing a couple of the new songs (Back On The Chain Gang in particular) I thought the show was otherwise pretty flat. I lost interest after the 3rd album and it wasn't until I saw them with yet another line-up that I believe included Johnny Marr on guitar opening for U2 at the LA Coliseum in late '87. That show was frankly boring and the few songs played off the first 2 albums sounded like crap.

The last time I saw them was in 2003 at The Wiltern. The last couple albums Chrissy had done as the Pretenders I liked and rekindled my interest in the band. It was a decent show but a far cry from the punky energy of the original band. Add to that Chrissy seemed to have a chip on her shoulder through much of the show. It was recorded as a live DVD called "Loose Screw in LA."

Yeah, that SMC show was in September; I was there too. I lost interest after the 3rd album too and never saw them with Mars or anyone else either. The Civic show killed. I had a chance to ask Martin online when he was writing a book (which he has scrubbed) what the deal was with the water in his floor toms. He said he liked the effect, but loved the cooling it provided in the old shed with HOT lighting. I also asked him about the sound...it was decidedly harder and rawer live than the first two albums....he said that was all their sound guy.

Btw, that concert is a bonus on Pretender II (Expanded & Remastered) if you don't already have it. It's insanely good, as you know. The Alarm opened that show and they came out for the cover of Jackie Wilson's ((You're Love Keeps Liftin)Higher and Higher) and fucked up some notes....lol

Ha, small world ain't it? I don't believe The Alarm opened though, I think it was some band called The Bureau. I remember they had a a heavy sax/new wave sound. I'd remember The Alarm, I really liked their first 2 or 3 albums when they were getting a lot of radio play around the mid-80's along with Big Country.

And yeah, I have that 2 CD deluxe of Pretenders II with the show. It's incomplete and the running order is mixed up though, there's bootlegs out there of the complete show in the same quality.
