Thousands Of Shows And I Still Can't Hear You!

#1 Post by Pandemonium » Mon Jan 16, 2017 9:37 pm

Every show I've seen not counting many blitzkrieged weekends spent Hollywood clubbing seeing nobodies in the 80's. I'm sure I put the kids of the owners of Ticketmaster and Goldenvoice through college...

Yeah, The Cure's a bucket list band. I would have seen them last year but they played the Hollywood Bowl which I hate going to. The only other shows/bands I really regret missing is Led Zeppelin in '77 when they played LA (I couldn't come up with the $20 for my friend's spare ticket and gas, they'll be back...ugh) and not getting a ticket in the mail order lottery for Pink Floyd in '80 at the LA Sports Arena doing the Wall tour.

I can hardly remember some concerts I saw in the late 80's early 90's!

Top few concerts would be:

The Lords Of The New Church - August 1982 Perkins Palace: This excellent but obscure punk/goth band was right up there in my top 3 or 4 favorite bands through most of the early 80's. The first time I caught this band was at at Perkins Palace in Pasadena. We had front row center reserved seats and as soon as the Lords came on, everyone tore up their seats and bum rushed the stage. They played their debut album, a few covers including The Rolling Stones "Fortune Teller" and more than lived up to the album's promise. Stiv Bators let a few of us up on the stage to sit on the sides as long as we behaved and at the end of the show invited anyone willing to follow them back to their hotel to hang out with them. After a long wait, we followed the tour bus with a couple dozen other people a few blocks to the hotel they were holed up at and hung out with Stiv and drummer Nicky Turner until Stiv decided it was time to get (even more) stoned and probably fuck a couple groupies in front of us ("uh, we gotta go, busy day tomorrow. nice meeting ya...").

Van Halen - June 21, 1981 LA Forum: This was Van Halen at their peak before Eddie's synth-pop sensibilities kicked in and Roth become a joke. They were touring behind the Fair Warning album This show was simply Van Halen at their very best. The best stage, best setlist, everyone playing at their absolute peak.

Bruce Springsteen - August 20, 1981 LA Sports Arena: This right here is probably my all time best show. A friend of mine who was a diehard fan (he played "Darkness On The Edge Of Town" all the fucking time) managed to score 2nd row seats and his brother couldn't pay for his ticket so on a whim I decided to go. I was barely familiar with anything Bruce had done up to that point aside from the Born To Run and Hungry Heart singles and wasn't a fan but this turned out to not only be an amazing show, but as far as Springsteen concerts, this later became known as one of Bruce's all time most historic shows as it was a benefit for Vietnam Vets and Bruce had a couple dozen vets, mostly in wheelchairs sitting on a platform right on the side of the stage to watch the concert. It was a 3 1/2 hour marathon and the next day I wound up buying everything the guy had recorded so far. Since then, next to maybe Van Halen and U2, Bruce has been the consistently best concerts I've seen. Although I gave up trying to record this show after only about an hour because I thought I'd get busted as I was right in front of Bruce's line of sight, I've been lucky enough to find a couple other people's recordings of this show over the years.

U2 - April 1987 LA Sports Arena: I saw two shows at the Sports Arena during the 1st arena leg of the Joshua Tree tour. The 1st show was a standard set and the band, especially Bono seemed tired but the last show of the stand was easily my favorite U2 show to date. The band came on with the house lights still on while people were rushing to their seats with the band slowing picking up on and performed along to the Lennon version of "Stand By Me" which was playing on the PA with Bono ad-libbeding lyrics about how cool it was playing in LA for a week. After that, they turned off all the lights and Bono sang the moody "MLK" in complete darkness and crashed into "Pride." They wound up playing a completely rearranged setlist from the standard set that tour. That night still remains the most memorable U2 show of the 20+ of their shows I've seen.

Bauhaus - August 1998 Hollywood Palladium: Having never seen them during their original run and only familiar with a few of their major tunes, I went on a whim to one of the reunion shows at the Hollywood Palladium not really knowing what to expect. Turned out to be a fantastic concert and that got me not only really into their music, but their offshoot bands like Love and Rockets as well. Very hot Summer night at the Palladium, everyone dressed in goth attire sweating like pigs and reeking of clove cigarettes except for maybe ...me... who came in shorts, tank top and flip-flops straight from a day at the beach.

Jane's Addiction - December 19, 1990 Hollywood Palladium: I had really been looking forward to this show, especially at the Palladium, home of some of the rowdiest crowds of any LA venue. My buddy and I got there with hours to spare, signs plastered all over the Palladium indicating the show was to be filmed. We spent the early evening hanging out at one of the bars off to the far side of the stage crafting our buzz. By the time JA started, we had weaseled our way up front about 20 feet back from the stage dead center. Loved the Christmas lights decorating the stage - it looked like someone's garage. We lasted about 3 songs before having to push our way back where we weren't dealing with moshing, slamming flying bodies and could enjoy the show in slightly more sedate surroundings. Although the show seemed short, it was a totally draining experience and the band was at their absolute peak.

Some stinkers, not necessarily because of the band:

Queensryche/Metallica - 12/7/88 - Long Beach Arena: It was the first leg of their "Justice For All" tour with Queensryche opening and they were doing a week-long stand at the Long Beach Arena. Surprisingly, the entire arena was reserved seating (which goes to show sometimes it doesn't matter if the floor is GA or not). I had been (what I thought) extremely fortunate in landing front row dead center seats for my friend and I. Through Queensryche's set, it was pretty orderly but as soon as Metallica came on, all hell broke loose with the entire floor behind us rushing the stage, throwing trash and worse, even the metal folding chairs. My friend and I got separated pretty quickly in the chaos and in the crush, I somehow got knocked to the floor and one of my legs got trapped in a folding chair and people were standing on it painfully pinning it and me on the floor like a bear trap. After a few minutes I managed to get up and out to the middle area of the floor where it was not so crazy. I lost my shoes and socks was dripping wet from the heat. After a few more songs, I tried to half-heartedly make my way back up front but came upon a group of guys in the crush literally groping and tearing the top off some girl who was hysterical. Me and another guy basically yanked her away and out of the pit by her arms and I realized I actually knew this girl (she was a friend of my former girlfriend). I wound up giving what was left of her my shirt as she was topless and we tried to get her to go to security to report what was basically attempted rape but she insisted on trying to find her boyfriend (I later learned she did and they left). I managed to stay to the end of the show but it was pretty much ruined for me. After the show, I found my buddy waiting at the car and he said he just went up to the Loge seats and found an empty seat to watch the majority of the show.

The Lords Of The New Church - 2/26/83 - Perkins Palace: The second time I saw The Lords, I stupidly got pretty loaded before the show. A couple songs into the set, I was only a couple feet back from the stage in the pit and I got clocked by either a thrown bottle or something and got knocked out. My buddy who was a few feet away saw me go down but had trouble finding me in the crush, people were literally stepping and standing on me. He managed to find me flat out on the floor laughing like an idiot and pulled me out by my feet. Another time I saw The Lords a couple years later at the same place, some guy literally shit himself clearing a big open circle right up front of the stage. Runny diarrhea, it had gone down and out this moron's pant legs, trampled and tracked all over the nice wood floor and stank like nobody's business. I wound up throwing away my shoes and sitting out the rest of the show from the bar.

The Cult - 8/2/01 - Anaheim House Of Blues: They way oversold this show and by the time I got there, they weren't letting people on the floor, we could only go up to the outdoor balcony which was also packed. After about 3 songs where we were literally outside the venue at the bar watching the show from closed circuit tv, we left.

Ministry - 5/20/06 - House Of Blues Hollywood: One show that was pretty shitty was the last time I saw Ministry when Al Jourgeson was in pretty bad shape. The setlist stunk, Al wasn't all there and the sound was terrible. The HOB has always had a mediocre sound system but for Ministry, the faults were magnified a thousand times. I literally couldn't tell one song from the next.It was just white noise.

Pretty much ask me about any show, and I at least have a paragraph's worth of ramblings about that particular night.

No Germs show!! I can't believe it. You live in LA, they're from La and they're the best punk band of all time. Explanation time... :waits:

Hey, I was busy seeing Styx and Asia, lol!

End of the 70's - beginning of the 80's during the 2 or 3 year window when the LA punk scene was going strong, I didn't do much clubbing in Hollywood. The only way I'd see punk bands was if I caught someone playing locally at The Cuckoo's Nest in Newport Beach and that was usually by accident someone "known" was playing there. In my defense, I did get to see Black Flag in their prime. The down side - I REALLY wish I'd been savvy enough at the time to catch The Misfits in their day.

I saw two of the same tours as you did. These are the tickets I already had scanned. My cousin (rip) dragged me to these shows because she was a big fan of the bands, but other than liking Faith No More later on, I've never liked the other three. Still had fun at the shows though.

And there was the ENIT show that I taped, but I would have to dig into my closet to find the ticket stub for that one.

Did Jim Rose Circus Sideshow and Marilyn Manson open this show too? If so, I also saw that tour.

As you can tell, the ticket wasn't used. The story behind that is ridiculous. I bought the ticket online and then booked my flight down to LA from the SF Bay Area. I needed to leave to catch my flight before the mail arrived with my ticket and when I contacted Ticketmaster to ask them what I should do, the girl I talked with said they would leave my name at will call at the Wiltern and to just let them know who I was and they would let me in. So I jumped on my plane, flew down to LA, waited to talk to someone at will call, only to be told they had no idea who the fuck I was or what the fuck I was talking about. The two people at the Wiltern basically treated me like I was attempting to scam my way into the show. When the Wiltern goofs got in contact with Ticketmaster there wasn't any notification letting them know that I had already purchased a ticket but it hadn't been delivered yet. They ended up telling me that if I wanted to see the show I'd have to buy another ticket and I was like hell no I'm not doing that and I caught a cab back to LAX and that was how I spent my New Years Eve. Sitting at the fucking airport all night until 7:45 in the AM to fly back to the SF Bay Area and when I got home sitting in my mailbox was the unused ticket.

it's funny but KV has also mentioned attending this show. Sucks that you missed it but take solace it wasn't a very good show by Jane's standards.

This was the first show I ever went to with friends. My cousin bought the tickets. For some reason I always thought Cinderella was there too, but after seeing the other bands written on the ticket I guess not. I do remember Poison though and being a little punk rock skater kid at the time I hated every second of their act :lolol:

Panda,

Phenomenal. Just phenomenal. I always enjoy your reviews so to see the scope of shows you've seen is impressive.

I know a guy who is a poet and an academic now who was in a band called the Alcoholics. They were punk and in LA. Apparently, Social D played their first ever show opening for these guys. Any chance you saw them?

They played around Redondo Beach a lot apparently: http://www.artifixrecords.com/Alcoholics.html

LOL, I saw Poison just before they broke big on my birthday in '88 at the Country Club in Reseda. Now I actually went because my friend and I wanted to see the opening band "Cherry Bombz" who had the two guitarists from Hanoi Rocks and the just-departed bass player from The Lords Of The New Church and it was their only SoCal show (they broke up about a year later). After Cherry Bombz set, we go upstairs to the deserted balcony bar and proceed to get gloriously shitfaced through Poison's set which was a laughably bad amalgam of 3rd rate Motley Crue/Guns n Roses/Glam Metal. We're heckling and making paper airplanes out of the thousands of band flyers littering the tables and pitching them at the band until my friend finally spikes one in the guitarist's poofy hairdoo. Might be the only time I've ever been physically thrown out of a show.

The sucky thing was, I wound up seeing them again a few years later at a big NYE show at the Long Beach Arena because my then-stripper girlfriend absolutely loved those hacks. They had the balls to end their show about 15 minutes *before* midnight so everyone celebrated NYE walking out to their cars in the parking lots.

No although the name sounds familiar. Though there's club shows where I caught bands I never heard of before or since that was just cover charge to get in the door, I have a pretty solid memory of 95% of who I did see and if I can't remember the band or show, I wouldn't list 'em.

What's the May 24th 2016 sound quality like? That show has most of the songs I'd have liked to hear live.

Average. Very boomy but with a very far-away sound and with LOTS of talkers.

22nd and 23rd are way better... different tapers though.

Yeah, idem Panda.

Sorry to hear you missed out on Led Zeppelin, but come on, you saw Guns N Roses' ride to fame ... You were walking the LA streets when something was boiling in the 80's. (Guns N Roses, Jane's Addiction, ...) Must be an exciting time and place

Since I'm most jealous about all these early Guns shows, could you share some more info about those?

Wow, that is an impressive number of shows you've attended, Panda! Equally impressive is your chronological detailing of when and where you saw all these shows. :thumb:

I'm surprised that you didn't see Queen while Freddie was still alive.

I see we've attended some of the same shows in the same years.

The Who (6/28/80 - LA Sports Arena)- I saw them in July that year. Also on the bill was Heart, J Geils Band and Nash the Slash.

Bruce Springsteen (8/20/81 - LA Sports Arena) - I saw this tour in earlier in the year. The one and only time I saw Bruce Springsteen.

George Thurogood / Prince / J Geils Band / The Rolling Stones (10/11/81 - LA Coliseum)- Saw this tour in Buffalo in September of that year but we got Journey instead of Prince and J Geils.

1982

The English Beat / The Clash (6/18/82 - Hollywood Palladium) I saw the English Beat too, but not with the Clash,

Clash / The Who (10/29/82 - LA Coliseum) Saw Clash that year too with Black Uhuru opening. Also the Who again this year, but with Joe Jackson.

1985
The Cult (4/26/85 - Hollywood Palladium) - Saw them this year too, first time.

1986
The Cramps (7/26/86 - Hollywood Palladium) - Sadly, only saw them this one time.

1989
Living Colour / Guns n’ Roses / The Rolling Stones (10/21/89 - LA Coliseum) - Saw this tour in London at Wembley, it was known as Urban Jungle. No GNR, but we got Living Colour. It was actually in 1990. If I recall correctly the show was postponed because someone in the band was injured. I think it was Keith, will have to look it up.

Perhaps later, I'll share my shows too. I don't have all the ticket stubs, will do my best to remember.

Yeh same here. A lot of mine will be UK 'Indie' bands from the late 80's early 90's. Plus a shed load of metal bands.

Yeah, the peeps with some age here should have interesting lists, not simply for the length of them but the content. Shows a great deal about tastes.
