Re: New Pearl Jam
I don't really like Pearl Jam but I like that song.
Re: New Pearl Jam
I like that song and I'll be at the two Seattle shows.
Re: New Pearl Jam
Apparently, they played 30 songs last night. That's a long fucking show!

That's pretty standard for them.Larry B. wrote:Apparently, they played 30 songs last night. That's a long fucking show!

At minimum their shows are 2:45
Their long ones go around 3:15
Re: New Pearl Jam
I was a massive, massive Pearl Jam fan up until Yield. I dug a few tracks on that album, and nothing since.
Re: New Pearl Jam
weird...
Re: New Pearl Jam
The Davids (bowie/byrne) discover pro-tools in 1982....
And in a kind of washed up/what do we do now way, not groundbreaking way...?
I'll hand it to Eddie for taking a leap though.

Re: New Pearl Jam
When I first heard the synths, I thought, "oh no, they're trying to do that hipster bullshit". But there is a balance of different instruments and sounds. They were kind of doing things like this back with, You Are back in 2002.
Re: New Pearl Jam
The music is fine. But it doesn't work for Pearl Jam. Not with Eddie's vocal style.
I know Mike McCready is really in to Grizzly Bear. I wonder if this is his doing.

Re: New Pearl Jam
Everywhere I have read comments on this tune, I see comparisons to The Talking Heads....I hear an anthemic Springsteen tune.
Re: New Pearl Jam
Yeah, on second listen, I agree with this.
It is a major David Byrne retread though, but I suppose there has been all that Springsteen retread already with Arcade Fire/War on Drugs/etc that I could see it working out for them.
Re: New Pearl Jam
War on Drugs are far beyond a Springsteen retread.
Re: New Pearl Jam
Don't get me wrong, I love War on Drugs, just finished listening to Deeper Understanding album doing my workout. But Springsteen is all over it, in a good way....Hokahey wrote: ↑Thu Jan 23, 2020 11:27 amWar on Drugs are far beyond a Springsteen retread.
Springsteen really made a unique/original sound though, like Talking Heads, and early PJ.....
Re: New Pearl Jam
Really??? To my ears there is nothing Springsteenish about this song. Perhaps some vocal similarities to Bruce in parts of the song but otherwise, I don't hear it.
I like the new song. There is definitely an 80s sound with strong Talking Heads, especially the guitar and singing in the beginning. As the song goes on, Eddie Vedder's singing is a mélange of David Byrne, Brian Ferry, David Bowie, and even Peter Murphy!
Re: New Pearl Jam
Less so on second listen, but I definitely get the Boss vibe on Vedder's vocals in the chorus.

Re: New Pearl Jam
I like the new tune, probably because it's just different from the usual Pearl Jam meant n' potatoes rawk or acoustic stuff. I believe the band has already stated this song is kind of an outlier compared to the rest of the album. Aside form the already mentioned throwback references, it reminds me of what Arcade Fire did to shake up their sound over the last two albums which didn't end ....well.
BTW, I tried for a single ticket to one of the LA Forum shows yesterday - TM was absolutely slammed, both shows sold out in minutes.

After 4-5 listens I am really liking this tune.....
It's way more complex than I initially perceived.
I like the familiarity of the 80s pop sound and the lyrics I catch are intriguing.
I dont know if it would rank high enough for listens beyond a month or two, but I will definetly be checking out the whole album.... That is saying something as well. I havent done that since No Code...
Hope the fact that this tune may be an outlier is a good thing, not that I would want 8 of these tracks, but hope they maintain the quality.

Re: New Pearl Jam
Some tidbits about the forthcoming album...
Early word (from Variety) is that it's their strongest album since Yield (1998); we shall see.
It's their longest running album, clocking in at 57 minutes.
"Dance of the Clairvoyants" is not a reflection on the rest of the album, stylistically. Stone has stated that you can expect some rockers, ballads, etc. Who knows?

Re: New Pearl Jam
See that's what I would be concerned about. If this is just going to be a one off and the rest is rehashing old ballads and rockers, not interested. There is only so much you can do stylistcally with those....would be pretty mind blowing if somehow they had an "original" rocker/ballad. And if not, im not interested.Tyler Durden wrote: ↑Mon Jan 27, 2020 7:33 am

Re: New Pearl Jam
It's a fine line. With a band this far along, on the one hand...I don't want drastic experimentation that just doesn't work...while on the other hand, I don't want a "by the numbers", tried and true rehash.mockbee wrote: ↑Mon Jan 27, 2020 9:17 amSee that's what I would be concerned about. For me, personally...I really enjoyed their self titled album (or "Avocado"). It straddled that line between relatively ambitious experimentation (for Pearl Jam, anyway), yet it wasn't so different that it no longer resembled who they are. And it felt like a cohesive album, where all of the songs fit together.
They do have a new producer on board...so that may help.

What do think of this Clairvoyant track?

Re: New Pearl Jam
I love the vocals and lyrics...in my opinion, very thought provoking. I also love the guitar work. The drums are okay...apparently, it's Matt Cameron playing and not a machine...though I'm not big on the drum fill going into the first chorus, which sounds like some weird "midi" sample or something. The keyboard and bass are fine.
But the drums, keyboard, and bass all together make them sound like Depeche Mode or something upon initial listens...and completely flies in the face of their traditional, organic, "Neil Young", meat and potatoes sound.
I do enjoy the track but I think it will make more sense upon hearing it within the context of the full album (how I usually fully assess songs by bands I follow). So, on a certain level, I'm still reserving judgment. It reminds me of when R.E.M. debuted "What's the Frequency, Kenneth?" or when U2 dropped "The Fly"...people were kind of perplexed but then it all made sense once the respective albums came out.
