New Alice in Chains

I think this new song is pretty good. I'm sure it will be fantastic live.

Days after kicking off their summer tour, Alice in Chains have unveiled "The One You Know," their first new song in five years. The sludgy cut leads the way for the band's as-yet-unnamed follow-up to 2013's The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here, which is currently slated to drop sometime this summer, per guitarist/vocalist Jerry Cantrell; it arrives alongside a microbiology-themed visual that juxtaposes shots of tiny critters with much-larger-sized performance scenes.

Cantrell detailed the forthcoming LP in an interview with Guitar World earlier this month, framing it as both a journey into uncharted sounds they "haven't done yet," and an honest-to-goodness Alice in Chains record. "It's got our fingerprint," he said of the album. "We're really proud of the material that we wrote and the performances we captured. There's some really heavy shit, some really ugly stuff, some real beautiful stuff, some weirdo trippy shit ... it's good!"

As with the full-length writ large, "The One You Know" was recorded with producer Nick Raskulinecz at Studio X in Alice in Chains' native Seattle, where they previously laid down tracks for the group's 1995 self-titled LP. (Additional sessions took place in Los Angeles and Nashville.) It marks the first release recorded by the band on their home turf in over 20 years.

 When I saw Matz posted in this thread I thought "I wonder how much Matz didn't like this song?". You are hard to please.

But...I agree. Catchy riff but boring chorus. Not great but not horrible.

shit, I'm that predictable....

it's an unusual song in that they lean so heavily on what's called a flat fifth power chord (I think anyway, haven't checked on a guitar, and I've just listened to it on laptop speakers) The same "chord" or more precisely interval that could get a composer killed back in the day (I think), it was known as the devil's interval and it's very dissonant. So to play that for the first 18 seconds of the song AND use it in the following riff is a bit out there to me. Not even Slayer would do something like that. It just gets to much for me fast, like in the intro, and besides sounding very dissonant the vocal melody doesn't move me much.

The chorus is better, but not great imo....it's a 3,5 out of 10 or something

That riff is so not good. I couldn't get through the whole song. :jasper:

At least they still sound like Alice in Chains though. I look forward to seeing them when they roll through Phoenix.
