I just don't want to hear old sounds by old bands. I want to hear new sounds by old bands, or new sounds by new bands.
People can claim to love it, but in 2 months when it's old news they are going right back to Lateralus.
Except me. I'll be busy listening to some fresh 20 year old who isn't resting on his laurels quite yet.
I'm with 67 on this one, it has to be fresh and new. 10,000 days wasn't new, nor was it fresh. it had 60% filler audio-wank fests and the "TOOL songs" on it were good but nothing mind-numbingly-amazing.. Vicarious for instance, it's a great song, but it's a TOOL song by the numbers. I still listen to it a lot and love it but meh... it's not like hearing it for the first time was like hearing Stinkfist for the first time.
I'm sure I will enjoy the new record when I hear it in two sleeps but I'm sure it won't amaze me.
I was thinking: if this was an album by another/new band, or the first album by Tool I ever heard ....

I have only heard the one song, so I can't comment. But I've had that same thought to myself about other bands and their albums before. The problem is, they did release it under that name and so it's going to be judged based off of that name.
I appreciate that a band may feel the need to evolve. But in doing so there is a likelihood old fans may not like that evolution. Even if they would have been a fan of it had it been the bands very first album.
When I listen to a Tool album I expect it to make me feel a very specific way. If it doesn't, then it is quite possible I will not be pleased with it.
All of that said, I've liked everything they put out. This new song just hasn't really done anything for me. But it's not uncommon that they have a few songs on each album that I don't love.

So, I've listened to the whole new album now. And it's really not very good. At all. I'm a fan of every Tool album prior. Have seen them a number of times live dating back to Lollapalooza 97.
Maynard sounds sleepy. His lyrics are the most generic attempt at Maynard Tool Lyrics I can imagine.
And the music sounds like...well, exactly what you'd expect I guess.
This album is like someone made a Tool album in a program for making Tool songs. It's so generically Tool that I can't remember a single song.
Grand Canyon is about 100000x better than anything on this new album.

Man, I used be able to sit through 10 minute songs. fuck that now. I tried listening to it but couldn't hold on to anything memorable. I repeated it quite a few times. I was however Skipping ten seconds of it every several seconds. Tool just isn't for me. Jane's and sabbath are the only bands I'd listen to 5+ minutes songs from.
Their fan base is also pretty shitty. Idk, they're just too slow for me. My brother always played the album with the track schism back in the early 2000's when I was younger.. never liked em'.
Their fanbase is the worst. They all think they are on some genius wavelength because they listen to Tool. And anyone who doesn't like a Tool song just isn't smart enough to understand it. It's massively cringe.
Watching them dissect the lyrics is always hilarious. They treat it like it's all some kind of spiritual awakening, and how Maynard is tapping into the secrets of the universe. Meanwhile Maynard was just writing about concepts from the last book he read and there's nothing to really dissect other than knowing that his songs are basically a book report.

Yeah, I saw these dates pop up on the KJ site and was like "WHAT IS THIS?!!!!!...................... ohhhhhhh darn."
Not a tool fan, and really don't want to brave the crowds for an opening band no one will be into....
I heard a 5 or 6 lp vinyl version will be out in November.
+- 1 song per side and artwork (etchings?) On the other side.
So, now that the album's been out for a few weeks: what are everybody's thoughts.
I kinda like it, there a few very cool pieces but it does drag on a little bit and misses the coherence of their earlier albums. Also: it never really explodes musically , if you understand what I mean. If Aenima and Lateralus are 9, this one is a 7.
