Girl bands.
Re: Girl bands.
A lot of my favorite chicks aren't in rock or modern pop, so knowing Bob's tastes, I feel like he'd probably not like them or be ambivalent. Luckily I have some other suggestions, most of whom I've blabbered on about before.
Grass Widow (All their stuff is great):
Broadcast (one of my true loves, and a still-fresh tragedy :cona: ):
The Ruby Suns
This is a great album. Mostly not female vocals, but this one has 'em, and it's a f'ing great tune, brilliant arrangement, etc.:
I guess it's quite possible Bob might like White Hinterland:
Peaking Lights
Probably too out-there for old Bobby Badtrips, but it's from one of my top albums of the year:
Madeleine Peyroux
And just to try to pry Bob away from rock/pop a tiny little bit:

They are no longer together but I still listen to Cibo Matto.
Re: Girl bands.
They played some shows recently and there is talk that they are going to release some new music in 2012.Artemis wrote:They are no longer together but I still listen to Cibo Matto.

Yeah, Austra is doing very well in UK and Europe. The singer, Katie Stemanis has an incredible voice.
Re: Girl bands.
I've just finished listening to their album and it has a very nice euro-pop sound, I can totally see it being sung in German and Russian.
And yeah, that singer has a sweet & strong vibrato

Re: Girl bands.
Check out Kelli's albums "Psychic Cat" and "Tiger Mouth" if you dig her voice. Both are fantastic. Way more upbeat than her Sneaker Pimps stuff, more on the dreampop side, but just as awesome.creep wrote:older but one of my all time favorites

VERSANT.
Former, and current, Shiny Toy Guns vocalist Carah Faye's side project with her husband.
They only had time to release an EP before they both rejoined STG, but the band is still active and working on a full length.
Love them.

Re: Girl bands.
Lily Allen's "It's not me, it's you" was my favorite album of 2009 by far.

Ken Andrews wife, totally awesome...
Re: Girl bands.
I like the new Lady Gaga song
"So to give you a little background to the creation of this song. I wrote it in Minnesota after the Monster Ball on the tour bus. We recorded it in one shot. Fernando on guitar, Paul on Drum Machine. I wrote, sang it, and freestyled the last minute + a half of the song."

I'm gonna be going through a nasty lonely depression for the next... indefinitely... so... feel free to veer toward the sad stuff... toward Portishead...

I love Jenny Lewis (she was in Rilo Kiley). This isn't for everyone (it's got a "California rock" vibe) but I love it. Ryan Adams plays on this track and produced the album.

Re: Girl bands.
I did my monthly trip to Amoeba Records in Hollywood and among the stuff I picked up was the new Savages album "Adore Life."
I've given it a few listens and while it's a very good album, it doesn't have quite the visceral kick the debut album had and falls a bit short of my expectations. Some of it is down to the production which seems to take the edge off everything but most of it is due to the songs themselves. My biggest snivel is there's very little of the almost Danny Ash/Bauhaus-style guitar work that made previous songs like "City's Full," "Strife" and "I Am Here" so appealing (to me anyway). Still, it *is* good and I look forward to seeing them live when they eventually play the West Coast later this year.
They seem to have a pretty big following here in LA. I saw about 6 other people walking around with or buying the album in the hour or so I was in the store and the counter guy told me they had sold literally hundreds of the album in the past two days.
