Oh, and what I really enjoyed on panama was the knowledge gained from the interview that that "odd" noise in the middle is actually Eddie's '72 Lamborghini. Sounded great
I hope this post goes viral and teachers everywhere pick up on this. Sounds like the way to go. Never heard of anything like that beforeArtemis wrote:'Panama' reminds me of high school. I had an art teacher, Ms Chivalo, who loved the album 1984 and often played it while the class worked on their projects. We had a record player in the class but she didn't let any of the kids touch it.
I assume it's the double CD that has alternating Roth and Hagar tracks in the red/white/black stripped case?SR wrote:Havin a blast with this GH's album.
Although woefully incomplete and barely a primer especially for the Roth era, this one has the last song they did with Hagar ("Humans Being," a non-lp track) which is one of the best things they did with him and (then) new couple of decent 1996 tunes with Dave (the last 2 songs on the disc). Thanks to Eddie's-then wife Valerie Bertinelli being on the VH mailing list and regularly posting updates, fans on the list had a nearly daily blow-by-blow accounting from her of how Eddie and Dave briefly reconnected after Hagar was out of the band, recorded the two tunes over a couple week period, lined up that MTV awards show appearance that got everyone fired up for a reunion which utterly disintegrated backstage during the show leading to a late night post from Val - "it's over."SR wrote:Best of Van Halen, Vol. 1 1996

Roth and his father played a crucial part in getting the band off the ground. While they all lived in Pasadena and went to the same high school, Roth's dad was indeed quite rich and they lived in that huge house while Eddie and Alex's family lived in a pretty modest home only a few miles apart. Eddie and Alex brought in Roth for Dave's ability to tap into the Roth money for instruments, amps, a PA and a van as much as any frontman/vox talents Roth possessed. To get an idea of the social disparity between Dave and the Van Halen's households, here's a couple photos of the VH's home including the back alley garage where they practiced.Artemis wrote:DLR's father was featured on The Lives of the Rich and Famous.

Pretty shitty about all the gold records being ripped off.We explained how we thought that with the Forum show being that night, and the band having been on the road for months, that there would have been a good chance that his sons would have been home visiting that afternoon.
"You would think!" he said, letting out a big laugh and shaking his head with exaggerated sarcasm as he went on a playful mini-rant. "The boys never come by here anymore!"
I think that part of the conversation has stayed with me because it proved so painfully poignant. Here was a man who was a professional musician himself, on the cusp of seeing his two sons validated in grand fashion with a sold-out show at the Forum, yet it was obvious that he also missed having them around. His sarcastic overplaying of the comment showed his humor and acceptance of the circumstances, but couldn't completely mask the truthfulness of it either.
Rock and Roll Hall of Famers Van Halen have announced dates for their first North American tour in three years. Featuring original lead singer David Lee Roth, the summer/fall trek will start and end on the West Coast, moving across the US (with two Canadian shows) over 39 dates.
The last time the band toured America, they canceled some 30 dates without a clear explanation. Roth later posted a video claiming the band had bitten “off more than [they] could chew.” Not long after, they were forced to cancel a tour of Japan when Eddie Van Halen underwent surgery for Diverticulitis, an inflammation in the digestive track. Roth had said prior to the Japanese cancelations that he had been trying to get the band to do more international touring. “But so far there hasn’t been any response,” he said, “so hope and faith are not actual tactics and strategies – they’re strippers from Albuquerque.”
Now, it looks like Roth, Eddie Van Halen, Alex Van Halen, and 24-year-old bassist Wolfgang Van Halen have settled any squabbles and united for this latest tour. In addition, the band has announced a two-night stint on Jimmy Kimmel Live for what will be their first televised performance in the US with Roth as singer. Hollywood Boulevard will shut down the evening of March 30th for the performance, which will air that night as well as the following one.
The rare TV appearance comes in support of the band’s new live album Tokyo Dome Live in Concert, their first such release recorded with Roth. The 23-song concert was recorded on June 21st, 2013, and will be released on double-CD, quadruple-LP, and digitally on March 31st. Pre-orders are going on here, and come with instant downloads of “Panama”, “Runnin’ With the Devil”, “Jump”, and “Hot for Teacher”.
I'm glad they booked a date at Irvine which is an easy 20 minute drive if I decide to go. No way was I going to the shitty Devore San Manuel Amphitheater and the end-of-tour Hollywood Bowl show didn't seem much more appealing to me. This is clearly going to be another greatest hits re-run of the past two tours so I'm not too motivated to see them again unless they slot in a good number of deeper cuts. The fact that they are playing with mostly two and even one days off between shows and that this is an outdoor shed tour is going to really destroy Roth's voice if he's singing as iffy as he was the last tour. The Kimmel show performance will be... interesting.creep wrote:any bets on if they make it through this tour?
i thought they were still an arena band. maybe not since they are only playing amphitheaters.
He was bald when he played a couple songs with the Foo Fighters at the Forum almost exactly three months ago (go to the 5:21 minute mark):Matz wrote:I thought someone here said Dave shaved his head....thought they meant clean off...or maybe he attached that rug again after doing that...or maybe..well ..fuck it...
Yeah, I think he's one of the nuttier front man in a major band ever. His YouTube "Roth Show" is way the fuck out there. He apparently had or has ADHD and was hyper as a kid (dinner was called "monkey hour" because he was so out of control) and it seems to have gotten worse in the last 20 years if anything. No doubt decades of cocaine use hasn't helped.creep wrote:i didn't think there was anyone that acted goofier onstage than perry but i just watched the ellen clip. what an odd dude. he has crackhead mannerisms.
