Review: Killing Joke - MMXII

Another tremendous effort from the English post-punk legends.

Writing about Killing Joke has always been problematic for me. As a critic you rarely find yourself in the eye of a storm you can’t deal with. Music comes in, you play it, it resonates or it doesn’t, you critique it and then it’s done. So much of music today is confection, ear candy that comes complete with a spiffy package and usually a scene you can proclaim yourself a part of. It’s easy to review bags of potato chips and cans of soda. Then, rarely, you’ll stand before a monolith, a band that’s music has transcended genre and woven itself within the fabric of consciousness. That’s Killing Joke, a band whose importance cannot be overstated and whose musical contributions are endless. They have a new album. It’s titled MMXII (2012). What the fuck do I do now?

Surprisingly, mostly the slower, more low key tracks. Pole Shift, On All Hallow's Eve and of the faster tracks, Colony Collapse and Rapture. That said, In Cytheria is by far my favorite track, I really can't get that tune outta my head. I think 2010's Absolute Dissent is an overall stronger album especially because it has a more guitar-driven, brutally direct feel to most of the songs which are my usual breads and butters, but this one is really good on it's own merits, it's just a different vibe and has a more self reflective side than the typical Killing Joke album.

If I have any complaints, it's Geordie's trademark guitar sound is mostly obscured on this album and the production is somewhat amateurish especially concerning Jaz's vox often drowned in a sea of echo and reverb overkill.

Watching the YouTube clips of the recent UK shows, most of the new songs haven't yet translated well live due to tentativeness on the band's part and Jaz's vox not quite up to task. I was a bit alarmed they quickly dropped "In Cytheria" after only a couple shows and that's their lead single. I really hope they tour the US again this Summer, they're really the only band atm I fervently want to see although Jaz has claimed (again) he doesn't want to tour the United States ever again. I'm just thrilled these guys are putting out quality music at an apparently a more prolific pace than any time in their history as they plan on recording *another* new album this Winter for 2013.

BTW, there's two "bonus"tracks not on the album out there. One's the B-side to the physical single called "Penny Drops" (not out yet) and the other here is "New Uprising" already found on YouTube which is an iTunes bonus download.

(I expect the singer from Rammstein to chime in at the beginning)

Hey TB,

Do you know if this album will be released in the US, or is it only UK import? I would like to buy the album, in fact greatly looking forward to high quality recording, but not hot on paying $24 + shipping..... :noclue:

It's supposed to be released sometime in mid-May in the US, possible with a bonus track (likely "New Uprising"). As with anything Killing Joke-related, nothing is set in stone until you actually see the product or the show. I was at Amoeba Records in LA this weekend and it isn't there as an import yet. I stupidly got impatient a couple weeks ago and ordered the cd and limited edition single through What Records in the UK for nearly $60 US w/shipping and it looks like the single has been delayed because they claim the packaging was flawed and they have to go back and re-print it. Now I probably won't see it until after the US version is out, lol! To rub salt in the wound, a lossless FLAC version is up on Demonoid which is a vast sonic improvement over the MP3 leaked version.

2012-04-13 LA CIGALE PARIS (FRANCE)
2012-04-14 LA LAITERIE STRASBOURG (FRANCE)
2012-04-16 BIKINI TOULOUSE (FRANCE)
2012-04-17 MUSIC HALL BARCELONA (SPAIN)
2012-04-19 TRANSBORDEUR LYON (FRANCE)
2012-04-20 LIVE CLUB MILAN/TREZZO (ITALY)
2012-04-21 VIPER FLORENCE (ITALY)
2012-04-22 ORION ROME (ITALY)
If I didn't have a lot going on right now I would seriously buy a Paris plane ticket with Rome return, and follow them around, skipping Strasbourg and Toulouse, spending the entire week in Barcelona, definitely my favorite city in Europe, with Paris a close second. Then maybe some French/Italian Alp skiing to fill in the days...............

oooooooooohhhh.............damn.

$1700 for the ticket............not shabby for 2 days out...........no way I could afford that, but who cares..........

damn you europe............I would trade all future janes shows for one KJ. :agree:

The Killing Joke message board is full of long time (and pissed off) fans who've booked flights for shows or entire tours in other countries over the past decade only to have the band postpone or cancel shows and tours, sometimes at the very last minute. Much as I love this band, I would never risk several thousand dollars on travel, etc to see this band knowing how often they blow off gigs. Of *any* band I know, they are by far the most unreliable. I even waited months after tickets went on sale before buying a simple GA ticket for the LA show in my area for their last US tour in 2010 and just a few weeks later, they postponed the tour for over half a year and then, the last couple shows leading up to the one I saw, Youth "left" the tour leaving a roadie to fill in on bass!

Uh oh. In typical Killing Joke fashion, things seem to be hitting a rough spot and possibly unraveling as they slog through their European tour. Large part of tension seems to be from Jaz who apparently picked the wrong day to quick smoking (everything). Youth's blog:

http://cultofyouth.wordpress.com/

This particular bit is pretty funny:

"Our gig (Tilberg Roadburn - Stoner rock festival) was a disaster but entertaining, the sound on stage was so bad and the all day drinking fierce. Geordie lost his rag and started kicking the monitor engineer’s mixer and then threw a full plastic bottle of water at him, the arc of its curve through the air was perfect cinema, everything went slow motion as its load exploded in a serpentine Pollack flash, luckily it missed the guy, but he fucked off pretty quick. This pissed off some other bloke at the side of the stage who started fronting out Geordie, meanwhile some of the audience started booing and throwing water at Geordie which prompted Diamond Dave to into full Bristol Rovers football hooligan mode and defend and backup his liege from the front and rear, until security arrived in the nick of time, we raced through what was left of the set and Geordie was immediately escorted out of his own gig by security, before he got arrested!

The clip is on YouTube, unfortunately most of Geordie's antics are off camera:

If I had 6,000 UK extra, I'd buy that. I'd probably be the only "star" thing I would ever buy though.....

Killing Joke is playing a few Summer Europe festivals and apparently are using a temp drummer named Jason Bowld. The guys style reminds me of that over-the-top wedding band drummer in KV's Drum thread. Also, check out Jaz's bursting seam in his boiler suit in this clip:

Killing Joke – Wolverhampton Wulfrun Hall, 14 March 2012

Jaz Gets A Right Dressing Down for the Encore

Like many others of a certain age my teenage evenings between 10pm and midnight were spent listening to the John Peel show. I can remember so clearly the evening that changed my life, I’ve had to check the date but apparently it was 17 October 1979 when I first heard Wardance, Pssyche, Malicious Boogie and Nuclear Boy and from that day forward it’s fair to say I’ve been obsessed.

Fast forward (cough) over 32 years and the original line up, plus Reza Udhin on keyboards walk on stage to a packed Wulfrun Hall and launch into European Super State from 2010′s Absolute Dissent.By the time they move on to the brilliant Sun Goes Down they’ve already hit their stride, Jaz Coleman juddering and grimacing, wild eyed, as Geordie Walker cuts swathes of noise from his guitar and the throbbing bass of Youth fits perfectly with the powerhouse drums of Big Paul Ferguson. It’s great to hear the old tracks, Chop Chop being another favourite into which they’ve breathed new life, but it’s the new tracks from the imminent release, MMXII that fill me with more pleasure. Rapture, Fema Camp, Pole Shift and Corporate Elect are all slices of classic Killing Joke, back to their best, dispensing with the metal leanings of recent releases and taking us back to the eighties (and what a song that was).

As the set progresses it dawns on me that this is a band at the height of their powers, as socially relevant and sonically challenging as they’ve ever been. If I close my eyes I could be stood at the Tower Ballroom or Digbeth Civic Hall in 1984, especially as the set reaches a climax with thundering versions of The Wait and Pssyche.

After a short breather they return for an encore of Love Like Blood, dedicated to the late Paul Raven, followed by the classic Requiem and leave the stage once more to rapturous applause. After a more lengthy break they return, Jaz sporting a rather fine dressing gown and complaining that we are keeping him from his bed before launching into a crowd pleasing run through Wardance.

Travelling home with my wife and son I can’t stop myself from repeatedly telling them that it’s the best I’ve seen them for twenty years..
Steve Hackett
