This song is one of my bucket list cuts I would love to hear live. They played "In Cythera" for only the 2nd time last week in Mexico, it should be a staple of the set.

Looks promising.
Seems they were pretty well received here last year, so they're doing another round.

If last year was the 40 years tour and they don't have a new album, are they promoting anything?

It's a continuation of their 40th Anniversary tour. They're doing a tour of the UK and Europe in August including some some festival shows. There was talk around late last year they want to record a new studio album but I doubt that happens before the end of 2019. Hopefully they will mix up the set a bit.

There is some not so good news on the KJ front as well which given their history, is unfortunately no surprise.

Pledge Music, which has been handling all their non-studio album projects for the last decade is in dire trouble apparently not paying bands for projects and not shipping completed products leaving a lot of fans of hundreds of bands scrambling to try and get refunds, something especially tough for fans of Killing Joke as they have several PledgeMusic projects that have been stalled for several years including the Symphonic Killing Joke concert and physical release where they collected thousands of dollars from patrons that apparently the band hasn't received. Pledge isn't offering refunds to funders and because of the several year time frame these projects have been crowdfunding, it's pretty tough to get a refund even with a solid CC company. it really looks like someone in Pledge was pocketing a *lot* of money.

In Killing Joke's case, they are going forward with pressing the "2018 Live In London" release on vinyl later this year through their own means (it was released on CD-R through Pledge late last Summer) but the other projects like the massive studio albums box set and the Symphonic Killing Joke project may be dead in the water.

I probably got the last batch of the two 2018 live releases on CD a couple months ago just before Pledge ran out of money.

I caught last night's show at The Yost Theater in Santa Ana.

A while back I had planned on seeing the LA show at The Roxy in Hollywood on Thursday and bought a ticket for it even though Santa Ana is literally 15 minutes away while Hollywood can be an hour plus depending on traffic. The thing was, Idles are playing the same night as the Santa Ana show so I opted for the LA date for Killing Joke the following night theoretically making for consecutive nights in Hollywood with Idles/KJ....

Then 3 weeks ago when my wife suffered the stomach issue and had emergency surgery and being hospitalized for over a week that kind of threw everything into flux. She's been home and recovering nicely the past week but today (Thursday) the date of the LA show I need to take her late in the day to get her staples removed and it’s likely I’m not gonna make the Roxy show tonight. The Idles show had sold out and they added a show in November at The Wiltern which was a much better option for me. So yesterday afternoon, I looked online and tickets were still available for the Yost Theater in Santa Ana. A short 15 minute drive, free parking in the lot across the street, I’m in.

The Yost Theater is pretty small, much smaller than even the Regent Theater in LA where I saw them last year and I believe has only been hosting concerts for just the last few years, probably holds about 300 people with a pretty small floor and it looked like the place was only 2/3rds sold, so it was easy to walk right up to the edge of the stage during the show. Based on what a breeze it was getting in and out of the place and the short distance from home and the bands they seem to be booking, I'll probably be seeing more shows here in the future.

The set was pretty similar to last year's tour, moving around a few songs in the running order, slipping in opening song Tomorrow's World, In Excelcis, The Fall Of Because, Tension, Total Invasion and The Hum through the set while dropping New Cold War, Butcher, Turn To Red, Follow The Leaders, Change and S.O.36. Other songs they've played through the tour this month during the encore like Love Like Blood and The Death And Resurrection Show weren't played last night - the encore was a short 2 song set of The Hum and Pandemonium.

I spent about half the show about 15 feet back from the stage where the sound was somewhat balanced and pleasingly loud. Jaz actually did a great job on In Excelcis, a song he's seemed to always struggled with. Once I decided to move right up against the stage on Geordie's side, that was literally all I could hear was his guitar with some drum and a bit of bass, I couldn't hear any of Jaz's vocals. Geordie's rig is incredibly loud at ear level from only 10 back on the stage and my ears are still buzzing today. I really can't understand how these guys can stay in sync with each other considering how loud they play. Something worth mentioning, Geordie's tone sounds much more "organic" like years past versus last year where he had a more shrill, harsh "metal" sound.

Considering this was a less than sold out show and the crowd was kind of sedate except for diehards up front, I thought the band played in top form and was in exceptionally good spirits. A lot of joking and smiles between Youth and Geordie - Youth often spent time playing right next to Geordie. Performance-wise, I thought last night was even better than the show in LA last year although I preferred last year's setlist. The only song I thought was a bit messy and shambolic was Total Invasion and the only song I really thought lost the crowd was Labyrinth.

Although I'm going to still try for tonight's show at The Roxy, if I can't make it and my ticket goes to waste, I'll be happy enough with last night's show and my unbroken string of seeing them every tour since 2003.

Thanks, it was great to get out and see a show, especially one of my old favs.

I wound up eating my ticket to last night's Roxy show. I probably could have made it but it was a long afternoon taking my wife back to the surgeon in South Bay and she was in a lot of pain by the time we got finally home at 6pm, that I didn't feel good going back out to Hollywood.

Just getting to this, thanks for posting.
This is a great recording, and they were in top form!

The classics sounded really, really good. Some of the newer tracks can be a little clunky, but still good.

I'm actually okay this is the first set of US dates i've missed in 10 years. Like you said, live they are really loud, sometimes hard to totally catch the nuance.

Hope they continue.....

I bought a bunch of stuff from their official site that showed up today from the UK. Their latest live album from a show late last year, a book that includes almost every song they’ve written and a tour photo book that Youth put together. The lyric book is set up almost like a pocket bible, lol. The tour book is ok, but Youth isn’t the greatest photographer - most of the shots were probably taken with his iPhone.

I don't know if it's strange at my age, 42, to still be a fanboi for this dude and band......?
I've only felt this way about Eddie in '92 when I first heard Ten, I was not so hot after Vitalogy...
And Perry when I heard NS for the first time in '95 until Relapse.

And Jaz since the first tracks I heard from first self-titled in 2010 - more???????

I hope to god he still has some juice left, I will eat anything up........

They just released a live LP/CD/DVD of a show from late 2003 at the Astoria in London that is really excellent. It's from the tour plugging the 2003 self titled reunion/comeback album and is top heavy with songs from that album and is probably my new favorite live release from the band not just because of the setlist, but because Geordie is way up in the mix and sounds simply epic (way better than the above promo clip). Although being the dumb completist I am with this band I bought all formats, you can get just the CD or DVD or LP. I know some fans complain that they release a live album every year with at least the same 10 usual burnout songs in the set, but I can't complain as most of the bands I still follow don't put out anything for years at a time.

Supposedly, they are going to start work by the end of the year on a new studio album.

Here's the link to order the 2003 show - these guys got this to me in 3 days from the UK *before* the stated release date - a first for this band!

This track is a near 10 year old collaboration between Coleman and Smeykal apparently finally getting a physical release with supposedly a full album coming at some point. Smeykal has been described as the Eddie Van Halen(!) of the didgeridoo(!!) but the music of this track is frankly more or less typical euro-industrial repetitiveness that overstays it's welcome by 1/3rd the way through.

Supposedly, a new Killing Joke album is still planned to be recorded now early next year with some European festival dates very tentatively lined up for Summer 2021 but with the current state of things, who really knows?

This might be interesting. A recording session with Jaz and Geordie of Killing Joke with Peter Hook from Joy Division in 1993. This will be released late Spring next year as a 3 song EP:

I've been getting into the Malicious Damage release, oh wow.

This Lokerse Seeing Red performance seems even better than the release. :noclue:
So good.

Panda, did you see them on that tour? Was that the best that you have seen them, or what was the best tour you saw?

Yeah, I caught them on this tour at the El Rey Theater in Hollywood on Nov 14, 2003. It was one of the best shows I'd seen from them, in large part because I'd only seen them once before in the mid-80's and I was really excited to see them again after nearly 20 years and really digging the (then) new album.

The El Ray is a pretty intimate venue, holds maybe 800 people, all GA so it was the perfect place to see a band. I remember getting there a bit early before dusk and people just starting to file in just as the doors opened. Bassist Paul Raven in camo face paint and oversized hoodie was talking with people in line - dude looked like the unibomber. The opening band was Amen, a very briefly known punk/metal band that was mostly jeered by the KJ audience, especially after the final song in which the obnoxious singer tried to climb the lighting rig and fell a whole 5 feet down on the stage, literally crying that he had broken his arm.

Killing Joke's set was pretty much identical to the set in the Malicious Damage video. They had been playing "Loose Cannon" in the set but had dropped it and slotted in "Follow The Leaders" in it's place by the time I saw them. One thing that really sticks in my head about the show was there was almost constant overwhelming hum/feedback from Geordie's guitar and rig the entire show. I was really tempted to go to a show in San Diego a day or two later but blew it off. It turned out only about 20 people showed up for that show and reportedly Jaz was either sick or fucked up and put on a really poor performance. I think they fired their drummer after that show when he didn't make the flight to a few following dates in Australia.

Probably my favorite Killing Joke show of the bunch I've seen to present day is the 2008 Hollywood House Of Blues show which was part of the original lineup reunion tour.

I can totally understand the hit or miss quality for this band...... but this tour, (THIS SHOW!), I don't know if its just the mix or what, but the sound from paul, raven, geordie, jaz just command attention each as distinct tracks....... my god..... :bday:

Total Invasion is phenomenal, along with the rest of the 2003 KJ release songs.

If I am remembering right, they seemed to drop a lot of those songs on later tours, just keeping Asteroid and the D&R Show and just went heavy on their first album, I wonder why they did that.....

Got the 10 inch vinyl of KJ÷93 this week. This is from a several day recording session back in 1993 of Jaz, Geordie and Joy Divisions' Peter Hook.

The 3 songs are decent, basically guitar, bass, synth and vox with some laid back percussion/drums w/no credit who’s playing but it could just be sampled drums. Music is mostly mellow, with a middle eastern bent much like “Jana” etc. Geordie’s tone is almost unrecognizable - tasteful rhythm mostly without the Geordie crunch. Peter Hook’s chorus-y bass is the most recognizable thing about these tracks. Jaz’ vox alternate between soft and early cookie monster on the same track. Basically a better take of the kind of music from 1987's "Outside The Gate" which was essentially a Coleman solo album. More interesting then memorable.

Someone put the songs on YouTube, I imagine they’ll be pulled soon…..

Speaking of Peter Hook, I found Joy Division and Killing Joke history really interesting....great story/photos here:
