10 Years of TGEA

#1 Post by someguy » Mon Oct 18, 2021 10:44 am

Dang- feels like yesterday we were making individual threads for each song.

Time is weird. It’s aged pretty well for me- I like over half of it and appreciate that it’s moodier and more eclectic than strays.

To date it’s the last record Dave has played on which is wild. Kind of the feels like the last push before they just started to tour for blocks at a time for the next few years

Anyways… 10 years

Underground feels like a 1.0 song. End of the Lies is an interesting TV on the Radio song with terrible lyrics, Curiosity Kills feels like GGU and would be quite good if the drums weren't so feckless. I also don't mind Twisted Tales.

The rest of the album I'd be ok never hearing again. But I will say that Splash a Little Water on It was incredible live when I saw them on tour. Just wish the solo weren't so painfully GNR.

I didn't want to like anything off of it at the time because I was salty about the whole situation not working out with Eric. Looking at it with more objectivity now, the album turned out much - MUCH - better than it should have given the circumstances and considering Perry's prior artistic output up to that point.

Had Underground or End to the Lies been a comeback song with Eric, we would've been all about it. And yeah, I get that people have issues with the lyrics in EOTL, but to me they're at least weird, and the instrumental is goth-y and hypnotic. It has some PfP vibes as well, as do the verses to Ultimate Reason.

The biggest irony to me is that Twisted Tales and I'll Hit You Back are pretty reminiscent of Help Wanted. Like, reminiscent enough that I have to imagine Eric would have good things to say about those songs.

All in all, I'd say about 5 or 6 out of ten songs are really good/solid. Absolutely a better record than Strays.

I still like Underground, irresistible force, and Broken People. That tour was slightly interesting because at least they played a handful of new songs each night.

I think Strays is much better. I don't really like a any song off TGEA anymore and I doubt I'll ever listen to the album again.

I like and dislike them both about the same but in different ways. Strays was an art rock band that tried to go rawk, and TGEA was a rawk band that tried to get their artsy side back. The result was two awkward albums.

Weird, I just listened to this whole album on the weekend for the first time in years...did not realize it was exactly 10 years.

I've always really liked about half the album.

Irresistible Force really does it for me. I've always liked the mood of it, and the guitar solo. This live version has the best audio (although it's a weird shortened edit), and watching it I see Perk's drum part in the chorus is more interesting than it seems on the album.

How many great songs ?

Like many said, I kinda like half of TGEA, but I could have never hear it without any damage.

It must be hard to be an aging rock star.

Yeah I dunno. Must be hard to have millions and not make awful EDM?

Plenty of great artists got old without becoming a joke.

This is also the hilarious reason I chose my old username. When Strays finally came out it was neutered and bad and no matter how hard I tried to like it I couldn't. I'm still amazed how many people I knew back then IRL who liked Just Because. But at that time, alt rock had already died but we were in a transition phase where teens were kind of caught in the middle. You had garbage like Papa Roach and Incubus competing with dinosaur bands from the early 90s... with the radio beating the Creed sound-a-likes to death hard. By 2005 alt was gone for good, despite the best efforts of Radiohead in the post-Napster era.

TGEA sounds better, Sitek as a producer did a great job, a darker tone to songwriting, I think Strays songs had potential but it was ruined by Ezrin who flattened the record into a fm rock sound.

That's true, but how many did a masterpiece 10 years after their debuts ?
Good artist generally have "quite easily" two albums worth of music, then the third album is often a turning point and after that, only few continue to surprise and interest listeners.
That's for the artistic point of view.
About becoming a joke... :hehe: I guess "we only become more and more like ourselve"

They're The Simpsons of bands. Started in the 80s. Got really really good and really really big really quickly. Then died out but refused to stay dead and came back as a zombie that just keeps putting out zombie crap.

I think this is being generous, and probably more accurately describes RHCP. Jane's post Relpase is like a rotting, totally dead corpse that gets strung up like a puppet to move around, with less flesh and fewer limbs every iteration.

I recall having very low expectations but I guess some hidden hope that low expectations lead to pleasant surprises. Womp. Didn’t happen. A few songs didn’t completely suck. That said, it was the last time that they toured with any purpose. I saw a couple of shows but the memorable one was some big concrete courtyard in Williamsburg surrounded by old warehouse buildings. They had a radio winner private show in a dressing room with 3 or 4 songs that was pretty cool. 30 or so people crammed in with them playing at the end of the room. Asked Dave for Then She Did and he apologized that they didn’t have time and said i should have asked sooner. The show had some drama and a nice set on a warm sunday night. They seemed to like playing new songs. Reminded me of Strays (when only the leaked album was out) at Irving Plaza . We’re so fucked with these guys because they’re so seldom motivated.

I can say that tour was probably better than NINJA. It felt like a mix between P4P and Jane's.
