Blur and Oasis sure. The Verve? Hmm, what kind of body of work do they have? Not a big or good one I think. It's basically all about that song where he's walking down the street in that video bumping into everybody. You need more than that

 By that logic, JA shouldn't get in because they have that one song about stealing. :eyes:

Urban Hymns is a huge and influential album.

There are four big singles from that one album. What album did JA release that had four huge singles on it?

Now that I think about it, this might be a screwy metric to use, since Our Lady Peace had like 7 decent singles from the album Clumsy, but they certainly don't deserve to be in any HOF.

Forget what I said about singles... The Verve are artistically significant for good reasons.

it's definitely a screwy metric to use. If it was all about singles Pink Floyd wouldn't have been inducted because the only huge hits they've really had are Money and Another Brick In the Wall part 2

Blur sucks, Damon will go in for the work he has done as a song writer and for Gorillaz, speaking of which that Gorillaz v SpaceMonkees album is awesome.

As for the Verve one of their "hits" off that album they stole from the Rolling Stones, The Drugs Don't Work is better when Ben Harper does it because he can actually sing.

The other band mentioned will get in for having a unibrow besides ripping off the Bealtes.

One youtube commenter explains it thusly:
unfortunately for the Verve, they sampled a symphonic version of the song that was released on some long forgotten collection. The band signed a deal to split the royalties, but ABKO, who owns the old Stones rights, changed the deal on them after the song was a hit. The Stones didn't really have a part in it, it was their old record company. Even Keith said,"If the Verve can write a better song they can keep the money." Raw deal for the Verve.
I don't think that = stealing.

Urban Hymns was a break out album, but Northern Soul has always been my favorite Verve release. At any rate, "Bittersweet Symphony" was so huge it overshadows the band's work in ways that make it seem like they were a one-hit wonder, at least outside of the UK.

Check out "So It Goes":

Blur has proven, I would argue, to have contributed more than Oasis (how many times has the modern-day equivalent of the Beatles/Stones debate been attributed to these two bands?) to alternative rock: more idiosyncratic and more embracing of a wide variety of influences. They never achieved the same level as What's the Story, Morning Glory gave Oasis, but definitely the long-view belongs to Blur. That said, I won't be surprised if any induction of the one came at the same time as the other just to ensure the hall plays it safe.

The Hall doesn't really care about influence a lot of the time they look at it as a popularity contest from what I have seen hence why Oaisys will probably get in. As for Blur I never got into them conversely I love a lot of the stuff that Damon has done away from Blur.

The Verve, Blur and Oasis? Lol. No, no, no, no! Blur would be the stand out of those three by a country mile but even they have been inconsistent. The Verve's Urban Hymns is very listenable, but by no means exceptional in any way. It wears off on you quite quickly. This comes after they changed their name from 'Verve' to 'The Verve'...they were notoriously bad before they released Urban Hymns and I don't think they have any other decent material to be credited with. Parklife is light years ahead of Urban Hymns in my opinion. The important point to remember here is that between 1989 - 1993, the UK was awash with incredible new music and "indie" bands (from UK and US). Probably the greatest musical era in my lifetime. This scene collapsed almost over night leaving a massive void for a about a year. Then suddenly, you get these two clowns from Manchester who start releasing mundane 'anthemic' hits with a self proclaimed love and influence for a very famous 60's band from the UK. YAWN, please no. NOT AGAIN.

I miss the early 90's :cona:

STP will definitely get in the Hall of Fame. They'll likely make it years after their contemporaries though like Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Alice In Chains, Tool, Rage Against The Machine, and The Smashing Pumpkins, but they will make it. A ridiculous amount of their songs are not only still played on modern rock radio, but also classic rock radio. Once all of the 90's bands get inducted the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame will be fucked though, there are hardly any bands who have come out in the last 15 years who deserve it.

i can sing "bittersweet symphony" like no other when i'm drunk.

but then again i do a pretty good "jane says" when i'm drunk too.

it's hard to say who the more influential band is.

i'll go with stp. was that an option?

the fact that you and a bunch of other goofs bought their music in the wake of nirvana grunge and other relevant musical happenings does not change the truth 67 .. they still suck .. sorry .. janes never sold as much as pearl jam .. so what is your point .. janes had actual good songs on their records .. pj .. mmm no .. pj had hits the way collective soul had hits .. shit you look back on and wonder why it ever got played in the first place .. oh yeah .. cuz of nirvana .. thats about it
