i agree.CaseyContrarian wrote:It is one of the biggest cliches in recording. But sometimes it's true. I do it. And there have been great records where that was at least partially the case: Dark Side of the Moon, Sgt. Pepper's, Kid A...The difference is that, there were also great fucking songs to justify the experimentation. Judging from the first two tracks off of TGEA, I'm not convinced that this is the case.Six7Six7 wrote:"we used the studio as an instrument"
Do you know how many good albums have been done that way?
NONE.
Although i read an interview where Flaming Lips said they kind of operate in the same way. But the difference is that the Flaming Lips are an art rock band, and Jane's Addiction USED TO BE an art rock band.
The Duff thing is interesting. Wasn't there an episode of Dark Matter where Dave said they scrapped the Duff stuff and started fresh "with a new team?" My guess -- like whoever else posted this theory, forget -- is that they were up against Capitol's deadline and had mostly shit to show for it. Then it was like, bring on the Duff tunes. The fact that Dave "just talked to him" is probably about royalty splits, not being best buds.
i think all those awesome instrumentals Dave posted will forever be nothing but awesome instrumentals that Dave posted.
Later, after the album has bombed, they will all claim they were rushed by Capitol
at which point everyone here will say:
"You've had 10 years since Strays"
At which point they will say "Hey everyone, Perry has a new single out next month called 'Booting Shaking Good Time', be sure to check it out!"
Then we'll

I seriously don't think Perry would give a shit if he was playing a tent that is half full. As long as he is getting a big paycheck, that is all that matters to him.

I think you're pretty off. Honestly, ask any musician, the studio is a thing that is learn much like and instrument, and you can coax brilliant things out of it.Six7Six7 wrote:"we used the studio as an instrument"

Unfortunately, the studio and all it's toys can be a crutch or worse, an actual impediment to getting things done depending on the band.guysmiley wrote:Honestly, ask any musician, the studio is a thing that is learn much like and instrument, and you can coax brilliant things out of it.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with being a studio artist. There are certain bands I love that aren't great live acts (and can't properly reproduce their albums in a live setting) but make great albums that sound amazing.
The problem is, Jane's Addiction was born and bred in clubs while performing live and loose. They are known for their legendary live shows. After building that reputation over many years, I don't think it's smart (nor fair to fans) to decide that now they are going to pursue being a "studio artist".

Dave talks about how him and Perry could spend all their time in the studio just turning knobs.
Well fucking stop. Let the producer do that. You should be focusing on writing 50 fucking songs and picking the 12-13 best ones for your album.
This "write 6-7 songs and record whatever 1-2 old ones you have laying around" bullshit is fucking amateur.

Fuckin' brilliant. Only Seeds tour I have seen was Henry's Dream.Tyler Durden wrote:AWESOME:

Why not let Etty sing for Perry if he's sick?

Re: NME Perry Interview - *UPDATE* Jane's out for Reading
At this point, it might actually be more entertaining. If anyone had told the 18 year-old me back in 1991 when his most precious band broke up, that the legacy of JA would look like this, I'd have punched them on the grounds of heresy.Deconstruction wrote:Why not let Etty sing for Perry if he's sick?
Sure, yeah, bring on Etty.
Re: NME Perry Interview - *UPDATE* Jane's out for Reading
I just think they don't have any creative juices in there. All the original songs were written in the same time frame and since then they have been mailing it in song writing wise. Perry and Pete could write good songs together, Perry and Eric can write good songs together. Perry can not write with Dave and Perk because those guys are not song writers. So the 3 of them together probably has some interesting ideas when they all get in the studio but there is no glue to hold those parts together.Six7Six7 wrote:just watch the video from KerrangTyler Durden wrote:There is absolutely nothing wrong with being a studio artist. I really think they should write with Pete, since the EA thing is never going to happen.

i agree 100%
Pete should have been playing rhythm guitar since 2001

Yup. And they should have kept Martyn. Basically, Jane's with Martyn on bass and Pete on rhythm, and Porno featuring Dave.Six7Six7 wrote:i agree 100%

I've always thought this also. Doubles the catalogue they can play from too! Fuck knows what you'd call it live but it would be great either way.Tyler Durden wrote:Yup. Re: NME Perry Interview - *UPDATE* Jane's out for Reading
I agree..Pete should be the 5th member at this time. He would add a punch and add some porno songs to the set. He and Perry also seem to be able to write songs together. Oh well..it'll never happen.
