I'd never noticed that Perry played Underground live before TGEA was released, or maybe even conceived...

The Great Escape Artist is the fourth studio album from Jane’s Addiction. It was released on October 18, 2011 by Capitol Records and EMI.
http://janesaddiction.org/tour/show/per ... 4-19/1988/
Perry Farrell - April 19, 2009 - Empire Polo Field, Indio, CA
Date: April 19, 2009
Location: Empire Polo Field, Indio, CA
Recorded: Video
Audio (audience)
Status: Confirmed
Type: Concert
Lineup:
Artwork: Flyer
Set List:
Underground
The Solutionists
Nasty Little Perv
Tahitian Moon
We're Gonna Have Fun
Stop!
Go All The Way (Into The Twilight)
Ultra-Payloaded Satellite Party
Show Information:
Coachella
So was this a leftover from SP sessions? Or maybe from earlier P4P or Jane's sessions ? Or was this gig around the time that the band was recording or writing tgea and he borrowed the song as filler or to test the waters?
Thanks to Janesaddiction.org for the info!

Could have sworn it was a PerryEtty song that was reworked for Jane's.

Wonder how many other 'non-Jane's Addiction" songs made their way onto TGEA..

Uh...guys? We knew this and talked about it years ago.
Underground was the one song Perry brought himself to The Great Escape Artist and reworked it with the band as a Jane's song.
Which is why it was always so ironic because it's the best song on the album.

That's the best song on that album and it was a PerryEtty song? Hmm, well, fuck I guess I like that one.
I too feel dirty. Seems somewhat reminiscent of the SYTBS era stuff.

I knew that was a Perry song but had no idea he played it before. Underground is a classic IMO. Dave wrote the music to Ir Force though! I love that one too.

I'm shocked bman hadn't heard it.
We had the audio, whether it was here or xiola, and a few of us discussed it. I guess it just got past most people somehow. At the time I thought it could translate well into a rock song, and I think that it did.

Splash is my fave track on TGEA too. Never understood why it didn't get more love.

I think a lot of people here blocked out the fact that Underground was a Perry/Etty song because they ended up liking it so much. Couldn't bare to admit they were okay with something that started out as a possible Satellite Party/Etty collaboration piece.
In time, this too will fade.
People will deny what they wish not to be true.

Splash is the worst on the album. Sounds like a mid-tier hair band ballad in pretty much every way. Cinderella was much better at it.

I Like Em Big will be reworked into an incredible Jane's song for the next album.
You heard it here first.

so we know that Perry brought Underground to the sessions; were the rest of the songs written for the album (with or without Duff) or jammed out at the studio? It's clear that "I'll Protect You" & "Embrace The Darkness" never saw the light of day (ha!)....

I remember Eric saying perry brought a song into the reznor sessions that had been laying around in his hard drive. I bet it was underground. I imagine it took a lot of work by navarro and sitek to make it sound alright

It makes the Jane's tours for TGEA that much more sad. Underground has been the song Perry opened with the last 4 times I saw Jane's. Underground was actually his opener in another band too? Lame. Switch it the fuck up already.
