I always thought something like this could happen, because I've so often seen couples who put so much effort towards showing us how great things are, only to suddenly fall apart. In such cases they seem to have been trying to prove to us and/or themselves just how solid everything is. My impression is that Etty has always kept Perry off-balance, and that's why he's always been so obsessive about her, and desperate to please. Feeling like you're always at risk of losing the one you "love" can have the effect of pushing that feeling of "love" (I think need might be a better word) into the realm of obsessiveness where your entire worldview becomes distorted.

Despite his flaws, I hope we have some empathy for (with?) Perry right now.

Well PEtty is always pathetic, Dave's is just a little disturbing His 22 year old girlfriend (25 years younger than him), apparently is unemployed because she is spending the entire summer in NY with him while he's shooting Ink Master, can't go A DAY without a selfie.
But that's normal behavior for a 22 year old I guess.
But it still looks like he's dating his own daughter.
