Bono don't know Perry
Artemis posted this video in the "U2" thread under Music and Art. U2 played Toronto the other night and performed "Desire" with a local U2 tribute act named Acrobat. Anyway, if you don't like U2, watch from 5:10 on...
So now it's time to have some fun with this. What does Bono whisper in Edge's ear? I'll start...
Bono: "Hey Edge...who's the guy...who was on the cusp of an amazing comeback with his band and Trent Reznor at the helm as producer and then totally fucking blew it?!"

Lol! Fuck You Bono! But Yeah, that Guy does sound a lot like Perry.

Re: Bono don't know Perry
To be fair, Perry was thanked in the liner notes of All That You Can't Leave Behind from 15 years ago. And there is a clip of Perry in their video Window In The Skies. It's obvious that Bono just had a brain fart the other night.nausearockpig wrote:"...one of our favorites...." yet you can't remember his name.. fuck off...
Re: Bono don't know Perry
Bono totally stole Perry's look for a bit. Just like Scott Weiland did.

Yeah...nobody in rock and roll ever wore sunglasses and black clothes before Perry Farrell did it.bman wrote: Bono totally stole Perry's look for a bit. Just like Scott Weiland did.

You're really stretching it here. Now if Bono had dreads and was wearing a pvc corset in 1991, then I would concede.

Yeah, I don't see any comparison between whatever look/attitude Bono swiped and Perry at all. Weiland, yeah, I do see some "borrowing" not just in look at some point but onstage mannerisms as well.Tyler Durden wrote:Yeah...nobody in rock and roll ever wore sunglasses and black clothes before Perry Farrell did it.

To me, U2's single "Vertigo" has always sounded like a weak imitation of (Strays era) Jane's. In fact, in my head, I can hear Perry singing it..
Personally, if I was going to copy (or "pay homage") to Jane's, that's probably not the era I'd look to, but there you go..

Yeah, I agree with this sentiment. And I can hear Perry singing it too.panicparty wrote:To me, U2's single "Vertigo" has always sounded like a weak imitation of (Strays era) Jane's. In fact, in my head, I can hear Perry singing it..

But I don't think Strays was necessarily a direct influence on U2. To play devil's advocate...the style of Strays and songs like "Vertigo" was a reflection of the times. Lots of maturing bands were shitting their pants because they weren't the new, hot thing anymore and we had now entered a new era of both pop and the mp3 download. As well, these groups were now competing with a new wave of bands (remember the "The" band era?). Some of the once cool bands were scrambling to stay relevant...by "streamlining" their song in 3-3.5 minute hooky bits in order to attract a younger audience. Whether that worked or not (artistically and/or financially) is up for debate. I didn't like "Vertigo"...but it was one of the biggest rock songs since the turn of the millennium.
Re: Bono don't know Perry
I always thought Bono must've been at least a tad influenced by Perry in his Mr. McPhisto bits. There's something oddly familiar about it if you see Perry's mannerisms and face around 1:58
Re: Bono don't know Perry
Bono's a cunt.
Re: Bono don't know Perry
Exactly. Another reason why he's a cunt.nausearockpig wrote:"...one of our favorites...." yet you can't remember his name.. fuck off...
Re: Bono don't know Perry
Maybe they are just embarrassed to be associated with Perry.
Perry probably made a really bad techno PerryEtty remix of a U2 song and Bono had to politely decline putting it out.

Re: Bono don't know Perry
When I listen to TGEA sometimes I hear U2 in there too!
Re: Bono don't know Perry
people still do that?bman wrote:When I listen to TGEA
honestly i have only listened to the album once. i guess you can say i never gave it a chance but i don't think my opinion would have changed.
Re: Bono don't know Perry
Absolutely. The drums and essentially the whole production screams U2 to my ears.bman wrote:When I listen to TGEA sometimes I hear U2 in there too!

Re: Bono don't know Perry
It's not just U2. TGEA sounds like every other band from the 80s...especially Depeche Mode and Duran Duran.
Re: Bono don't know Perry
I like TGEA.
Except the 3 songs they did with Duff.
Dave did a hell of a job on that album, musically.
The lyrics weren't that great, but Perry's vocal melodies worked.

The album is "okay". Strays left a very similar impression on me...it feels half baked. There are some quality songs...along with some terrible songs. "Irresistible Force" is horrendous.Six7Six7 wrote:I like TGEA.

Re: Bono don't know Perry
Strays went out of it's way to sound like all the other Nickelback Rawk that was on the radio in the early 2000s.
Thanks alot, Ezrin.
TGEA is at least diverse and isn't just all "Check out these big fluffy riffs, bro! Pound some Monster energy drinks and listen to the album on the way to the MMA fight!" like Strays is.

Re: Bono don't know Perry
I agree. I feel like they actually were kind of trying something different with TGEA. But in both cases in didn't work...Six7Six7 wrote:Strays went out of it's way to sound like all the other Nickelback Rawk that was on the radio in the early 2000s.

With Strays, they forgot to bring the darkness of the original band. It really lacked any kind of artsiness that the original albums had. It was a full on "Do the Dew" rawk album.
With TGEA, they tried to make up for Strays' lack of goth atmosphere or longer songs...but it still had many missteps. We all know the album was recorded through emails and Perry Skyping the studio from a beach or shopping mall with his family...and you can hear it in the songs.
If you take parts of Strays and parts of TGEA, get a better producer, and throw Eric or Martyn on bass, you've got a GREAT album.
Re: Bono don't know Perry
they should have called the guy that did the synths and samples for Kettle Whistle (the song). It's done so amazingly well, so impressed by whoever did that.
Re: Bono don't know Perry
Perry writes shit lyrics now. That doomed both albums. If Perry was still singing poetry it would be fine. Hell, even a song like Kimberly Austin is beautiful. It doesn't have to be dark or pained. But I don't fucking care to hear him sing about Etty and their lifestyle. No one gives a shit.
