JANE'S ADDICTION RETURN TO LOS ANGELES
OCTOBER 3 and 4
Back in April of 1989 Jane's Addiction played a series of legendary shows at Los Angeles' historic John Anson Ford Theatre. Now on October 3 and 4, 2011, front man Perry Farrell, guitarist Dave Navarro and drummer Stephen Perkins, along with Chris Chaney on bass, will return to this historic venue teaming up with Citi to play their ground-breaking classics and launch their long awaited new album, THE GREAT ESCAPE ARTIST, due out Tuesday, October 18 on Capitol Records.
I've never been there so i don't know if its a great place, but obviously its a place with JA live history. So this is pretty cool, I guess. L.A. has, by far, the most choices of venues that JA 1.0 played and that are still open. NY has the least, so i'm wondering what we're getting here.
For those keeping score, from 87-91, in NYC (including brooklyn) they played The World (gone) L'amour (gone), the Beacon Theater (not a club), The Cat Club (gone), Scream at the Limelight (gone), Lismar Lounge (gone, and I never heard of it, but its described thus "The Lismar Lounge- what a scumpit!" here: http://www.brooklynvegan.com/archives/2 ... _1987.html Pier 84 (gone) Madison Square Garden (not a club, and they'd probably be about 18,000 short of a sellout if they played there now) and The Ritz (gone). So where will they play? The Ritz is an interesting choice. There were actually two locations for the Ritz and JA played both, and both still operate. The original Ritz, which is the famous one that ran for the longest and is the one where everyone played in those days, is now Webster Hall. It was carved up into a bunch of smaller rooms as a disco years ago but a few years back they restored the original big ballroom and it looks and sounds great and is very nostalgic for those of us who lived at the original Ritz in the 80s. But JA's show there, which i don't recall, wasn't any sort of big event. Their shows at the second Ritz were legendary indeed. Two nights at the front of the Ritual tour. Awesome classic JA. That Ritz was open for a few years when the original one closed, and is in the original Studio 54 space. It's still there as Roundabout Theater at Studio 54, owned and being completely renovated by one of the city's bigger repertory theater companies - the Roundabout. That would be the best choice but I have no idea if its available for concerts these days or even available at all - it may be under renovation. But as far as i can tell, nothing's playing there presently, and the Roundabout is always fund raising, so maybe they'd make it available.
If not, this leaves some dubious choices. Hammerstein Ballroom sucks - it wouldn't sell out because its huge, and it wasn't even open in 86-91. But the relapse shows were there. They also played Irving Plaza on the Strays tour. But although Irving is legendary and cool and tiny and all that, the real JA never played there.
Hoping for one of the Ritz's. Expecting something less inspired.

I thought Dan Cleary mentioned that it's Irving Plaza.

Re: John Anson Ford Theater
The Ford Theater's a nice place to see a band. It's outdoors and barely holds 1,000 people. The one thing to consider is parking if there's an event going on the same night at the Hollywood Bowl which is nearby but that doesn't seem to be the case for these two shows.
Coincidently, the only show I've seen there was one of the April '89 JA shows. The only thing that makes me a bit wary about seeing either show there is if seating (if there will even be seats) is going to be GA or reserved. If it's reserved seating, there's no way I'm going to consider going and I'm not too keen on bothering even if it is GA because I don't expect major setlist surprises or differences between the two shows.

Re: John Anson Ford Theater
hadn't seen that. some great p4p shows there. and i think its the only place i JA play 'the riches'. or was it 'wrong girl'? hard to remember such momentous performances all these years later.bman wrote:I thought Dan Cleary mentioned that it's Irving Plaza.
Re: John Anson Ford Theater
They played Wrong Girl, Riches, PIP, Strays, Just B/C and True Nature at Irving Plaza in 03. Porno has some good shows at Irving.

Re: John Anson Ford Theater
I think you should go just due to the fact that the only thing you've seen there is JA 1.0. On the other hand, why ruin the memory? Glad I'm not facing this moral dilemma.Pandemonium wrote:The Ford Theater's a nice place to see a band. It's outdoors and barely holds 1,000 people. Re: John Anson Ford Theater
i'll go if i can get tickets for the 3rd.
Re: John Anson Ford Theater
$38.50 for tickets is pretty cool for a LA show....but of course after the "fees" they are $52.55
Re: John Anson Ford Theater
gonna go?creep wrote:$38.50 for tickets is pretty cool for a LA show....but of course after the "fees" they are $52.55
Re: John Anson Ford Theater
i still don't understand how we have gotten to a point where ticketmaster is allowed to assess 50% extra in "fees"
So it costs half as much to print a little sliver of paper as it does to rent a building, pay a staff, and hire a band to play for 2 hours?
bullshit.

no..i'm going to one of the chicago shows. that is enough for me i guess.sinep wrote:gonna go?creep wrote:$38.50 for tickets is pretty cool for a LA show....but of course after the "fees" they are $52.55
Re: John Anson Ford Theater
$14.05 in fees fer ticket. these are small shows with a capacity of 1200 people. just with these small shows ticketmaster makes $33,000. doesn't seem quite right.Six7Six7 wrote:i still don't understand how we have gotten to a point where ticketmaster is allowed to assess 50% extra in "fees"

Re: John Anson Ford Theater
I don't have a citibank card, so I'll have to wait until Saturday and try my luck....
Re: John Anson Ford Theater
i keep flip flopping on this.
before this was announced i thought i wouldn't see jane's addiction ever again.
then ETTL was kind of cool, and i've always wanted to go to the john anson ford theater, so i thought for sure i'd buy tickets.
now i'm not feeling it again.
i guess we'll see saturday if i buy tickets or not.

old ritz, now webster. best choice. super cool room with a lot of history, even though very little of it has anything to do with JA, at least they did play there (opening for iggy pop??)Matz wrote:Hammerstein BallroomRomeo wrote: they also played out at Stony Brook

hammerstein. i doubt very much that they'd sell out two nights in that huge cave. when was the last time they sold 8000 seats on their own for any venue anywhere (NINJA and festivals obviously don't count). the free show recently at Terminal 5 was extremely easy to get into and had little or no buzz about it.
but if previous post about irving plaza is correct, even though they break the mold of playing places with JA 1.0 history, its a great place and P4P played great shows there.
stony brook would be cool.
Re: John Anson Ford Theater
stony brook is too far...besides I don't think the the University has concerts anymore like the old days. Remember when Hofstra used to have shows back in da day?? I saw so many GREAT concerts there, one notably was The Clash. AWESOME gig!!
Hammerstein they could do one night there not two, again.
Webster Hall would be a fine choice, right size, great NYC history!
