In mid 1997 to early 1998, after the One Hot Minute tour came to a broken end, the band came together to write a new album with production by Rick Rubin. It's unclear how far these sessions went, and nothing has appeared music-wise apart from Circle of the Noose.
These sessions were very fractured, and due to Dave and Anthony's relapses, Flea's personal problems and Dave's subsequent leaving of the band all material from the sessions has remained unreleased... officially.
It has been said that a looping section of the opening appeared on the bands website back in 1997 and 1998 is from "Circle of the Noose".
The song is a tribute to Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan (and Dave seems to imply that's actually a sample of his running through it); he died right around the time this was being recorded.
Flea recently commented on it, seemingly unaware of its notoriety within the RHCP community.
It remained unheard outside of collector's circles until early 2016.

Re: New Navarro era RHCP track leaks!
Just realized this is already being discussed in a RHCP thread. Still, it really should be posted here considering it has Dave on it.
Re: New Navarro era RHCP track leaks!
Based on the song title, and the supposed heroin addictions that were going on at the time that caused the band to release Dave, I was anticipating a much darker song.

Re: New Navarro era RHCP track leaks!
Very cool to hear it. I really love Dave's guitar work on it - especially when the intro part comes back in during the verse. Was expecting the sample in the song to be more prominent. Interesting that it seems to have been recorded in March 1998, only a month before Dave left and John came back. Anthony still has his one hot minute style voice.
Re: New Navarro era RHCP track leaks!
If the RHCP had followed this line of music, they would've been alright for a little while longer. This could've been a really good song.
Re: New Navarro era RHCP track leaks!
wow, finally some actual major league breaking news......Circle of the noose....and then it sucks...... ..where's the melody, where are the interesting progressions or riffs? no where. I might change my mind on it some although I doubt it, but it sounds like a band that's dried up creatively. They would never have topped OHM
Re: New Navarro era RHCP track leaks!
Yeah, true, but I agree with what (I think Nausearockpig) said, that the bass and the guitar have a nice groove/togetherness on that first riff.Matz wrote:wow, finally some actual major league breaking news......Circle of the noose....and then it sucks...... ..where's the melody, where are the interesting progressions or riffs? no where. But it doesn't actually 'rock' as a whole
Re: New Navarro era RHCP track leaks!
And it's a demo, keep that in mind. Just a demo.

Next leak needs to be embrace the darkness
Re: New Navarro era RHCP track leaks!
I liked it
Re: New Navarro era RHCP track leaks!
It's a lifeless common and lazy song by very tired and alienated musicians. I can't believe how differently I feel about the good efforts of this band.
Re: New Navarro era RHCP track leaks!
And that photo had to have been done by a 16 year old on shrooms for the first time.

I like it too. Sounds so frikking 97.
Re: New Navarro era RHCP track leaks!
I'm not a fan of Anthony Keidis so I don't know if it's affecting my opinion but vocally I think this is terrible. Do RHCP fans that normally like his vocals like them on this?
The music is cool.
The music is cool.
Re: New Navarro era RHCP track leaks!
If Dave and Flea brought this to Stephen and Perry during relapse it would've been a good song.

Re: New Navarro era RHCP track leaks!
Wow. Not what I expected. To be perfectly honest it blends well with all the other OHM outtakes (ok i know this one is from 98). Like stretch, Bob, Melancholy Mechs etc. it lacks drive, direction, inspiration and any idea for a song to be honest.
Listened to this a couple of times and then jumped to Arcadium disc one. Two hours later after clicking through the tracks on SA I can only conclude with the same thought I initially had in 1999, 2001 and 2006: This band was all about Frusciante and his genius tier songwriting skills. If you compare this Circle of the Noose and the other OHM outtakes and even the last album IWY, they have no creative fuel because all that time it was about Fru and his genius creativity.
If you ask yourself honestly, In your heart of hearts you know that without him the chilis would be a band even more marginal than Jane's have become since after Relapse. Honestly I love OHM, but in terms of why RHCP are so beloved across the planet even today it all boils down to genius songs on the 4 albums with john starting with BSSM. They would go nowhere without that.

Re: New Navarro era RHCP track leaks!
BSSM is a masterpiece for sure.
Mother's Milk is too.
But I honestly don't like what he did with the peppers after that. Maybe I'm missing something, maybe I just outgrew the RHCP. Don't know.
But I also like Uplift Mofo and OHM, I even think the first album is kinda ok and funny.
You could argue that indeed there are better 'songs' in the pop sense on the later albums, but they lost a lot of their punkfunk attitude which made em great in the first place. I think it rather boils down to Flea. I think up until OHM Flea had a lot of influence/having a lot of input on the songwriting , but since californication he just became the very qualified bass player in John's band.

Re: New Navarro era RHCP track leaks!
I think this is the key. By now, I know I outgrew the RHCP, although I'd still play or sing along to some of their songs. It's not a band I'd listen to normally nor one that I'd name as one of my favourite bands. I think I left them behind with my 25-year-old-self, along with Jane's Addiction and Porno for Pyros. When I was around 21 I left behind Green Day and No Doubt.Mescal wrote:maybe I just outgrew the RHCP. Don't know.
And I do can recognise the value of the RHCP before John, with John and then with Dave. But I'd much rather listen to a bunch of other stuff than to play BSSM again.
Re: New Navarro era RHCP track leaks!
I listened to some of BSSM a couple of days ago and I still love it. It's timeless music to me and it's a classic album along the lines of Back in black, Disintegration etc, I'll enjoy it when I'm 75 as well. Same with OHM and yes, the 80's stuff is great too, severely underrated by many
Re: New Navarro era RHCP track leaks!
Is it just me or don't Matz and Mezcal sound a lot alike? They're really hard to please...Mescal wrote:Yeah, true, but I agree with what (I think Nausearockpig) said, that the bass and the guitar have a nice groove/togetherness on that first riff.Matz wrote:wow, finally some actual major league breaking news......Circle of the noose....and then it sucks...... ..where's the melody, where are the interesting progressions or riffs? no where. I sometimes confuse you. Carry on...
