I like the album for what it was...I liked the relapse tour for what it was with flea...Jane's with flea! Rhcp with Dave! But it wasn't really janes or rhcp with either in there...imho and thus it is not near the top of the mountain of peppers albums for me
Two interesting remarks here....first that DN fans were introduced to the Chilis through him. That concept wasn't even in my orbit of possibility. As you know, and might even agree, the RHCP were part of a church of youth rebellion and edginess here in LA well before Jane's was glimmer in the city's eye.....an LA staple even before they hit college radio hard nationally. The idea that DN's arrival was anyone's entrée into the band in the early mid 90's is shocking to me, but certainly possible.
As for AK and what I call his compartmentalization of the album/era. Yes, he had relapsed many times over the years, but the DN era was his darkest. Additionally, making OHM was a hardship from day one. They tried to make it a cohesive experience....starting with shipping Harleys over to Hawaii so they could bond while writing and recording. That didn't work....ever stymied by chemicals, radically different writing styles (RHCP had traditionally jammed together, while DN was used to a separation between members coming together with framed song structures), and writer's block. I have been in the same room with DN and AK in the mid 2000's. I watched them.....they were not very friendly.....no embraces, no welcoming laughs, no social accommodations of any sort. It was best described as a brief and rigid discussion...a decorous formality. I just don't think they are two personalities that mesh very well. I think, but obviously don't know, that the OHM era simply brings regret and shame to the guy.
