Breakin away

Hi all. Just thought maybe some of you could help? I am trying to break away from JA/Porno For Pyros, but they were so much a part of my life and I'm just finding hard to let it go I guess. I had been hoping to wake up one day and hear them make some interesting songs like they did back in the day or maybe Porno For Pyros could be able to rekindle but I have given up on any of that. I know its been a long time since they were hip and I'm frustrated none of them are able to do what they used to be able to do but pretend like they can just to collect the dough$$$ and I know the significant other changed his way of thinking and re-trained him because he didn't used to act like a chimp. Part of me won't let go and I need to move on but haven't found any group to fill the place they occupied. Thanks in advance.

Nice welcome to a new member. :conf:

I was one of the last holdouts here but have finally thrown in the towel. At this point I doubt I will ever see them live again unless they are playing with a band I really like. They are pretty much like a pretty good cover band now. Probably still fun to listen to after a few drinks. I think all of us except a very few can say it's over with no hope at all.

I'm old and don't listen to music much these days but Faith No More has filled their spot with me. One of the rare bands that improves with age.

Well, JA was already a nostalgia act even back in 2003 (unlike 1997), so it is a little weird I guess to not have moved on in the last 14 years... It took us all different amounts of time. And yeah, if you're old, why wouldn't you just listen to the stuff you already know you like? There isn't a solution to "replace" a teenage obsession in your 40s... unless you're going to buy a Harley and live out a cliche... :noclue: The hard part about new music is that it's always 98% terrible. Why waste your energy unless it's something you actually enjoy being into for itself?

I could find an awesome new band once a week.

You people are just lazy and out of touch.

I'm not either of those things. I also have taste, though.

If you don't know every note plus a live tape from each touring cycle of radiohead, just immerse yourself in that for a while. Hopefully they're not done, so 4-5 years from now LP 10 will come out and they'll tour again and it will remain the best thing out there.
If you missed Frank Zappa, cure that omission.
If they come thru your town and you want to get high (with or without substances) and have far more fun at live music than most bands can dream of generating, go see the reunited Ween.
If you think it would be great if a seminal punk rock band that's still churning along could manage not to be a laughing stock, check out what the buzzcocks do live or the fact that Wire put out a great record.
Good young bands? Ask 6767 or any of us geezers who actually keep up, because there's good stuff out there and i wish i had the time and energy to do what he does and stay on top of it. I listen to Coachella on Sirius every year for random bands and hear some great stuff. Sirius XMU is well curated too.
Finally, St. Vincent.

Only Beethoven is good enough for the music major, I suppose. :eyes:

So can I, it's just having to filter through crap to get there...there is no denying that "most bands suck" for me... I'm a picky bitch when it comes to my musical tastes....plenty of great music out there, it just takes time to find

Give me Mendelssohn and Stravinsky and I'll be good.

Maybe you're just too easy to please?

I don't know about 98%, but it's not easy finding a band I like, as oppossed to a song I may like from a band I'd never want to listen.

In the last 5-10 years I've probably only added to my "bands I like" list Animal Collective, Beach House, Yo Nunca Fui a un Parque de Diversiones, Agarrate Catalina, David Bowie, Lidh, Kishi Bashi, Rufus Wainwright, Radiohead, Panda Bear, Tame Impala. That's just over one band a year.

And bands that have one album that I like: Bon Iver, Vampire Weekend, Deadmau5, Fleet Foxes, Typhoon.

It takes a bit of dedication, really.

These are two bands that have decent catalogs of music are still in some way active and still working/touring at a fairly high level of creativity that I'd recommend to any (former) Jane's fan:

Killing Joke: Been around since 1979, had many ups and downs, changed musical styles throughout their career but have really come back the last decade with some of their consistently best music. Punk, dub, goth, industrial, metal, ambient.... there's points in their nearly 40 year career that touches on all those genres.

The Cure: Another band that's been around since the end of the 70's, has a fantastic 8 album spread between Seventeen Seconds and Wish and a ton of great b-sides.

Both bands have huge catalogs will take some time getting through.

I don't think you necessarily need to break away entirely. I know they are done creatively. Doesn't make those records any less special to me. But I agree it's good to explore other cool bands. As a starting point, you can look up JA Spotify playlists and listen to similar bands that are great as well. They don't have to be new bands either.

I'd just do the math...2017-1991=26. That's a lot of years since the genius of JA. Factor in what PF has turned into (and actually put out) and the sum is break away....asap. NS and RDLH have held up really well, and if you're like me (old and sentimental) they still make time freeze.

Just listen to your local college Independent radio station. You may also like Wilco/Spiritualized/Spacemen 3. Although some of that is pretty depressing. I am rediscovering other 80's bands who I missed the first tine around. That helps too.

Or, just every now and then put something like this on. Never gets old for me.

Exactly. Just like every other time you found a band you liked.

Spotify is free. You like a song you heard on one of the 10 millions ways of listening to new music? Put on the album on your way to work. Or on the way home from work. Or while you're in the bathroom getting ready to leave.

This isn't hard, people.

It just takes a bit of dedication.

If you can't find the time, you're not a music fan. That's all. Stick to the NFL or NBA or whatever TV show is on NBC right now.

Thanks to social media, discovering new music now is easier than it used to be, imo. I find new music all the time. I have very diverse tastes and am open to giving something new a try.

And that's all it takes.

The only people who "can't find anything new that's good" or think "98% of new music sucks" are people who don't want to listen to anything new. They just want to listen to their old records over and over and over again trying to relive the feeling of being 16. Sad.

You're confusing my comments with something else... The claim that 98% of ALL music sucks is perfectly compatible with liking lots of new music. There is a LOT of music out there. This is also compatible with it being onerous to find precisely what you like. And all I was really saying is that if you're trying to "replace" Jane's Addiction, a band that was in its prime during the Reagan administration, you might be okay just relaxing and listening to other things you already know are good, because you aren't going to find something and suddenly start obsessing at the level you did when you were a teenager. Unless there's something wrong with you...

I really hope I don't ever refuse myself the enjoyment of music as I get older just because it's not the thing I used to listen to.

I'd be so sad about that.

Totally this. I have a few friends who just constantly listen to the same old/same old and tell me you'll never get any better than the Stones/The Beatles etc...zzzzzz, I just see that as plain laziness. I've discovered a whole bunch of bands in my 40's both old and new who have been given me so much musical pleasure. I can't recommend Spotify enough.
