Very few guitar players could improvise on this level on the spot! Listen to how it flows, how perfectly played it is, how technically difficult some of it is and notice, that it's not just mindless scale'y nonsense up and down the neck. There's an actual "story" there. Ask a guy like Satriani or Slash to top this and they couldn't do it, certainly not on the spot like Dave does here, and perhaps not even if they had a day to do it.

And of course, if you think you can top it feel free to upload something. Should be easy for someone like you who thinks Dave sucks, right? Put your money where your mouth is :waits: :waits: :waits:

It's fast for sure, but these are just pentatonics played...well, fast. Its pretty basic and the improvising on this isn't as impressive because he is actually just running a blues lick in the same key..but again, really fast. He never really strays away from that blues scale.

he does stray actually, he uses the blues scale, the dorian mode and the mixolydian mode. It's an impressive electric guitar statement

I guess you must hate Voodoo Child as well, that's in E the whole way

Stephen's been posting some 30 second clips of him on Twitter. I'd much rather watch those to be honest.

I was in the crowd... unfortunately, live, the vocals weren't nearly as good and clear as they are on this recording. They are very good on this recording.

Uhmm, I think Slash can easily top this.

Not saying that Dave is not a great player, love him and all that.

But, come on, Slash ... Few guitar players out there with such a great feeling as Slash.

Wasn't really impressed with the shredding. But then again, I've never heard of pentatonic menamonic and whatever you guys are talking about

He's amazing at composing.. He just isn't great improvising live. I really wish he'd solo live like he does in his albums.

I'm pretty sure Mustaine is a much better guitar-player than Navarro. But I like Dave.

Dave doesn't even know how many frets his guitars have.

I guess this band is now just relegated to playing a festival or two each year?

I told you I can see the guitar thru his eyes. I believe me and him have a lot in common..we suck but we come up with some dope shit sometimes.

Things I have learned from MicrowavedGerbil:

1. We don't know how to properly post on message boards.

2. Dave Navarro can't play guitar.

Dave is great. I don't think the criticism of him ITT is warranted. A.) He contributed plenty to writing in 1.0, even though a few songs were written before he joined. B.) He can fucking play. This is good improv from him imo. He hits a bum notes at one point but plays it off well, like a GOOD player knows how to do.

That said, he does have a bag of tricks. You can usually pick out certain licks and runs that he busts out. Something descending ala whores or something out of the pentatonic box reminiscent of three days. Can't tell if it's mixolydian or Dorian. Steve has certain beats that are in his bag of tricks here. Namely the superhero type groove.

When did I say he can't play? I said he isn't very good off the spot..yes there are occasions where he pulled off free styling but other than that he isn't very good at improvising his solos live. I think he should stick to playing his solos studio version.

Or to 55:25 when he misses his cue to come in during Whores.

So criticizing someone on a single aspect of their playing is the same as dismissing their talent as a whole?

See, I just honestly don't think it flows naturally..it feels so artificial.. Forced and uneducated. I in no means want to bash in this dude, he is my guitar hero but honestly I'd rather, myself listen to his studio work.. I showed my instructor at valley collage a clip of Dave soloing been caught stealing live on the later with jools Holland video, he agreed and stated that Dave, though he is familiar with his pentatonic and C minor\Eb , he doesnt present it properly. How can that be? He told me, if you can't utilize them basically, you don't understand it well enough.
