Maybe he just gave up and makes music with his wife because he knows that's all he can do to make himself happy at this point. There's no way he thinks she is talented. There's no way he'd rather write words for her than himself. There's no way he'd rather make house music on his laptop than work with Dave or Pete.

He probably has just realized that the world passed him by and all that's left is to get drunk and make fun music with his wife that ends with him getting laid every night.

I would also imagine that when he's feeling down he has those thoughts you mentioned (or maybe vice versa - sometimes he has those thoughts and he feels down because of them). But look at his face, and watch him speak. And listen to the things he say. Perry is mentally ill.

And to be honest, after reading Panda's comment, the possibility that he's using should not come as a big surprise either. He's hardly ever been strong enough to face the obstacles life's given him without the help of drugs, if ever at all. Now, reaching an old(er) age,maybe not being able to write good music, having very few friends, not being relevant, maybe having physical difficulties... you know, having wrinkles... it all seems to be very difficult for him.
