The last time you saw Jane's live

#1 Post by creep » Thu Oct 25, 2018 6:43 pm

This might be interesting??

Mine was 9/24/11 at The Metro in Chicago. It was a good last show to see because it was at such a small venue so they went out on a good note for me.

The setlist sucked but most recent ones do.

Whores
Just Because
Ain't No Right
Ted, Just Admit It...
Been Caught Stealing
End To The Lies
Ocean Size
Three Days
Irresistible Force
Up The Beach
Mountain Song
Stop!

Encore:
Jane Says

NINJA tour in Phoenix. Bought ticket early before released Houston date. Smuggled in weed inside each individual cigarette at airport. Stood in front of Avery entire show. Tom Morello’s “party band” opened.
A good and proper last show for me. EA!!! 🤩

Fuck, just 4 years ago at the Sunset Music Fest...the all NS show but I think they played Stop and Just Because. I remember clearly they did not play Thank You and I was pissed...I kinda let loose at this show and left drenched. I met lizwiz there and one other guy who posted here a lot and loved FF.

9/4/2012 Keller Auditorium, Portland, OR - I was on the fence about going to this show, and didn't decide to go till the last minute. The venue wasn't too far from my house so I drove down and scored a ticket for $20 from a scalper (about a third of what it would have cost me thru ticketmaster). I was bummed I missed the opening band, Big Black Delta, as I like them a lot. Jane's put on a solid show, though well past their prime. Worth the $20.

Last show for me was 2/27/12 Massey Hall, Toronto

SET LIST:

Underground

Mountain Song

Just Because

Been Caught Stealing

Ain’t No Right

Ted, Just Admit It

Twisted Tales

Classic Girl

Jane Says

I Would For You

End To The Lies

Three Days

Stop

ENCORE

Words Right Out Of My Mouth

Ocean Size
The show was okay from what I remember. I bought a tote bag and a t shirt.

This is a review from one of the local papers:
Perry Farrell called Jane’s Addiction’s 2011 album, The Great Escape Artist – their first collection of original material in eight years – because he’s always trying to escape his storied past, as the founder of alt-rock festival Lollapalooza, among other things.

And yet, Farrell, now 52, was up to his crazy old familiar ways on Monday night at Massey Hall as Jane’s Addiction – rounded out guitarist Dave Navarro and drummer Stephen Perkins, along with Chris Chaney on bass – put on a 90-minute show big on theatrical production with a muddled middle despite a strong beginning and end.

Note: Before the alt-rock icons played a single note, a large group of women were led across the stage by what appeared to be a roadie and Pink Floyd’s Welcome To The Machine played while ghostly red lights were beamed out into the audience.

What it all meant was anybody’s guess, but it certainly suggested, at the very least, the sex-fuelled night of rock ‘n’ roll that was to come.

Farrell, dressed in head-to-toe black including a black leather jacket, fingerless gloves and designer track pants with a low crotch, began the evening in strong voice with the new song, Undergound, from The Great Escape Artist, an accomplished album under-represented in the set with just four songs.

Instead, the tight-sounding band – it took just 10 minutes for black leather pants-wearing Navarro to lose his shirt and show off his numerous tattoos while displaying his “mighty” guitar skills as Farrell called them – concentrated mainly on their ‘80s-’90s output.

The audience, on their feet from the beginning, lapped up such classics as Mountain Song, Been Caught Stealing, Jane Says (with Perkins on steel drums), and Stop along with fan favourites Just Because, Ocean Size, and a marathon version of Three Days.

But the distractions were many, including nonsensical talk from a potty-mouthed Farrell, who swigged from a bottle of red wine – “tonight we all get circumcisions!” was the tamest of his proclamations – and ‘50s-era S&M pornography that was projected onto three video screens during oldie but goodie Ted, Just Admit it.

Farrell, who has always liked the idea of two women, going back to the provocative album cover of Jane’s Addiction 1998 debut, Nothing’s Shocking, was dwarfed by a sculpture of two naked women behind him, and there were also two live women on stage who alternately sat on swings, donned S&M gear and spanked each other (Farrell also spanked one of the girls), or strode around wearing black leather bustiers while wielding canes.

There was also a stuffed bear, a man dresssed in a white hood and white tux and tails who alternately hung or beat up baby dolls on stage during the new song, Twisted Tales, before his own mock suicide, a guy dressed as a human sized crow and a creepy robot-slash-human who pushed a baby carriage across the stage.

It was meant to be thought provoking, but not all of it worked.

And the show took a turn for the worse when it slowed down considerably in the middle as the musicians gathered at the front of the stage to perform slower songs like Classic Girl, and I Would For You, with both Navarro and Chaney seated.

As for Farrell, when he wasn’t talking, he was a hyper, whirling dervish of energy, whether he was twirling, tap dancing, shaking a tambourine or maracas up on speakers or hi-fiving audience members at the front of the stage.

I left the venue thinking Perry Farrell, still crazy after all these years, God bless him.

December 12, 2003 - Civic Auditorium, San Francisco, CA.

It was the same venue and almost the same date (12-15-90) when I first saw them, so it was a fitting bookend to seeing Jane's live for me.

It was the Live 105 Not So Silent Night show. The setlist was super short and I thought they were terrible.
Stop!
True Nature
Been Caught Stealing
Strays
Just Because
Price I Pay
The Riches
Mountain Song
Ocean Size
And even though I didn't enjoy them that night I remember that when their set came to an abrupt end I left feeling ripped off because they were the band I went to the show to see. I also got to see Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and Iggy Pop the same night, so entire show wasn't all bad.

The only interesting thing about Jane's set was the band started Stop and played about 80% of the song without Perry even appearing on stage.

I did videotape it and I believe I sent you a VHS of the show creep. When I posted on xiola that I recorded it only a handful of people sent me a PM saying that they were interested in a copy. For some reason the audio came out bad on it though from what I remember. I might have watched it twice and that was enough for me. I'm not even sure I still own a copy of the show :noclue:

I was at that show. I had fun but it was probably because I was pretty drunk. It's hard for me to have a bad time drinking. My memory of the show was that I saw Stephen getting interviewed in the lobby so after the interview I acted like I was in his entourage and walked backstage with them. I probably said something stupid because I remember Stephens wife getting mad at me for something and asking me to leave. :drink:

and here is a pic from that night

I met her once and talked with her for about 30 minutes at a Banyan show. I didn't know who she was until I asked her if she had ever seen Banyan before and she said "uh, yeah, Stephen is my husband" and I felt like a huge idiot :lolol:

She was super nice to me and gave me some Banyan stickers.

Lollapalooza 2016.

I didn't care, but my brother, who got me into them to begin with, and has no idea what an embarrassment they have become, wanted to get as close as he could.

They played at like 5pm. The sun was still up. I maintained my position about 100 yards from the stage. He got within 50 feet. We caught up afterward. I thought it was meh, he was happy to have seen them.

I guess it was appropriate that I saw them on the 25th anniversary of their breakup. Since that's what they do best.

Now that I think about it, the last three times I have seen them were all at festivals in which I paid to see someone else entirely. I saw them in 2015 at the Aftershock festival in Sacramento because I flew in to see Faith No More (CheSTP was on the bill too!), and I saw them on the Rockstar Energy tour in 2013 because I bought a ticket to see Alice in Chains.

They were just here in Phoenix last year. The venue is like 10 minutes down the road from me. I didn't go. I just looked up the setlist. 12 songs. I made the right decision. :noclue:

Last time I specifically paid to see Jane's Addiction: NINJA Pittsburgh.

At the Gorge in George Wa. on the Ninja tour with Eric. Right in front of him with some folks from the board. I was out of my gourde on stuff. Good show. Then it all felt like it came to an end.

10/27/12 at The Wiltern Theater on the tail end of the Escape tour. It was an ok show but killed any further desire to see them again. The whole High School production/play during "Splash A Little Water On It" was laughably bad. You can see the same 10 songs and a few crap new ones only so many times.

07/16/2016 - Asbury Park, NJ - Stone Pony Summerstage. A RDLH show.
I got booted for taking a puff off a joint. Rainy night. Snuck back in. Wasn't into the show.

I saw about 35 shows since El Cid. I hope to see more too!

I last saw them in Rosemont IL back in 10/21/2001. Martin was playing to the left of Perry and Dave on the right side. The highlight was them opening
with Kettle Whistle while Perry was wearing that huge white parachute dress. At one point during the show I vaguely remember Perry taunting the crowd a little bit
because it wasn't a sell-out.

I was about 3 rows back from the stage the whole night right next to someone who filmed the entire show. He took my phone number on a dollar bill
afterward and said he'd call me so I could get a copy of the video but I never heard from the cat.

There was supposed to be a one-percent meet-up at Shoeless Joe's Bar and Grill across the street but i'm not sure if that ended up happening. There were
also rumors that Perry might be downtown at Smart Bar spinning records after the show so we went over there and had some drinks for about an hour but it was a
Sunday night and nothing was going on.

The reviews were so-so because at that time they were still being compared to Janes 1.0.
One well known Chicago critic who gave a positive review of Perry's performance and how well the band played and sounded, ended it by saying this...

"It was a great band, and may one day be again. But right now, it's on cruise control. On it's 1997 reunion tour, the quartet relied heavily on acclaimed 1988 and 1990
albums "Nothing Shocking and Ritual De Lo Habitual" to carry the show. That it did exactly the same thing five years later is inexcusable. Once Jane's was the
sharpest of the cutting-edge bands. Now it has become as predictable as the dinosaur rockers it once made extinct, touring the hockey rinks of North America
for the most disappointingly banal reason: money.

This isn't the Rosemont show but 2 nights later in Minnesota.

Ha. I was at that same show. Went over to Shoeless Joe's but couldn't get in because my GF was under 21. That was 17 years ago. Jesus.

24 Feb 2010. Pretty sure this was the last EA club/theatre show. The ones he did after that were festival shows.

I fucking loved it.

Camden NJ 2009. First AND last time. I have no interest in ever seeing them again unless Eric comes back for some reason.

One of my favorite shows ever. Such a special night. I had never been so excited for a concert and I think it ended up being one of the better NINJA shows. Perry didn't look like an idiot and Dave and Eric were mouthing along to many of the lyrics. I was in the pit with @someguy and it was as if the rest of the venue melted away as soon as they came on. Felt like a club show or something. I walked away that night thinking I had experienced a legit slice of Jane's. But it did also feel like it was gonna end soon. I so feel lucky that I caught them. Wish they hadn't downtuned for that tour, but still think they haven't sounded as mean since Eric left again.

Wow... I seriously couldn't remember so I had to go and search my own FB page... apparently it was October 24th, 2015 at The Warfield. I recalled that I went because I could get in for free and needed a night away from the kids. I spent more time chatting with old friends/coworkers than I did watching the show. It was a lot of cringeworthy moments with a few passable interludes. But, I can't say that I was disappointed because I went in expecting them to suck?

I skipped them on TGEA tour, even though I could go for free, because I just couldn't generate any interest at all, same as the album.

I was working a show at The Warfield that night when a friend who worked for Capitol grabbed me and said she had free tickets (Warfield show had just ended). So we ran down Market to the BGC and got inside for I believe the end of Mountain Song and all of Ocean Size before they abruptly left the stage and the lights came on. If I recall, the rumor was a band squabble precipitated the short set?

This is interesting and I am glad you saw this. I was really excited to see our LA NINJA. I took my 13 year old son. It felt like a stupid musical circle of life thing for me  . Frankly, I don't know if they were good that night (bt 2.0 standards), but I do know EA didn't want to be there. He spent a freat deal of time on his bass cabinet, and much of that facing off stage. It bummed me out. All in all, I am glad I took him.

I think it's good your son got to see the OG lineup

I was 19 and far less jaded, but the experience still sticks with me.
