IG Live

#1 Post by bman » Wed May 06, 2020 5:57 am

So Etty had an Instagram Live chat last night with Perry. Pretty entertaining and included many highlights that people here would find amusing! A couple of things gleaned though is that Perry is releasing a box set of his non Janes solo material. So I guess that's SYTBS, Kind Heaven and Satellite Party?? He said he's working on a remix track as well. It will also include a booklet that he's writing. It's kind of odd. Does he owe a label any more records?
Someone asked if they go to xiola.org! Perry commented on that and said how a lot of fans wanted him to remain like his Nothing Shocking/Ritual self but he wanted to change and have a family etc. He sang a tiny bit of Ring of Fire.

A box set? Who's going to buy it? It's not like his solo career was a huge success. In 2020...even a box set of an artist with a successful legacy wouldn't necessarily move that many physical copies. Seems like a very odd decision.

In all seriousness, there's more money to be made repressing JA's Triple X debut on vinyl than there would be in a Perry Farrell solo box set. Despite what people think, Jane's is still a highly (relatively speaking here) marketable product that can generate some cash. Financially, it would make more sense finally releasing those "deluxe" versions of the Warner albums if they're looking for any kind of financial gain off music sales.

15-20 years ago people on these boards were definitely saying stuff like that he should do more drugs, and similar stuff. But since the NINJA Tour? No. I think most of us don't care that he's a different person who has a family. The music he makes just isn't good. I like SYTBS a lot. A ton of people who didn't even like Jane's Addiction loved Porno For Pyros. But the ridiculous lyrics and derivative music since 2008 or so? It's embarrassing to even tell people you're a fan of the earlier work now. You have to qualify it: no, no, he was a different kind of space cadet back then and the music makes up for it. We don't want the old space cadet back, and frankly I don't even want good music from Perry anymore. I want him to enjoy life with his family and, maybe try not to make such awful music -- but I don't really care about that as much as I might have 10 years ago.

They're both morons. Few people ever suggested he forever be the same person. All anyone asked is that he have some taste and not tarnish the legacy of something that was special to a lot of people.

Also, no one wants a Perry Farrell box set. They could still make some coin releasing the treasure trove of classic JA stuff people actually want, but nope.

Yeah I think his timeline was off anyway when he was referring to the Xiola.org fight. That was in 2004/2005 when they broke up and a team Perry vs team Dave fan on fan crime spree began. That's when Etty came in and started posting, and then Perry came in to defend her I believe, and then Perry and Sonny had an issue. I think that was how it all went down. Man that was a long time ago. Anyway, the Live IG thing was pretty funny for a lot reasons. It was cool to see Perry though. That guy still has like a kid's energy. It's clear who is in charge of that house though! I'll tune in if there's another one for sure.

It seems like Perry was always one to be kind of motivated by "the haters". Back then, it was the government, the status quo, society. Now, it's like 5 or 10 people from the JA forums. Oh yeah, we are a high-level threat who are trying to bring you down, Perry!

It's ridiculous, but not surprising. He's a clever businessman, but not a person who is highly connected to reality. He's just made bad music for over a decade. Bad music that an extremely limited number of people would want to hear. I've just checked Spotify and he was around 48,000 monthly listeners. There's a band from Baltimore that I like, called Beach House, and they have almost 2.5 million monthly listeners. There is an Uruguayan murga called Agarrate Catalina, which is very niche and hardly known outside Uruguay, Chile and Argentina. They have 55,000 monthly listeners. Perry Farrell promoted the launch of the lyric video for Pirate Punk Politician in every social media outlet he had access to, and even made the launch a YouTube Live event. The event had less than 10 participants and weeks went by with the video having less than 10,000 views.

No significant mass of people like what Perry does. That is a fact. I think Perry has been confusing Facebook followers and retweets with 'fans.'

I'm sure Perry is thinking about releasing a boxset, an autobiography, a photography book, a compendium of Hanukkah recipes, another autobiography written in poetry form, seventeen animated gifs and twelve Jane's Addiction albums. It's not going to happen. None of that is going to happen. There are no distributors that would take his rubbish products, and no investors that would back him anymore. Even less after this economical downturn and how uncertain the future looks.

I wish Perry and his family health and happiness, for sure. And I hope Perry can see that his artistic prowess for the last two decades has laid in business, not in creating music. Selling his festivals. He is happy doing that. Just do that. Promote bands who have an edge. Make money whilst doing it. And enjoy it. Stop going into radio shows promoting Kind Heaven and telling how you were Xiola's cousin and drug-dealer, for fucks sake. Use that space to promote bands that have an edge and then have them in your festivals. And get a cut from that.

I've heard some Beach House songs that I like. What's a good place to start with them?

Love me some Beach House.

Also, I just realized that Perry gets to blame Covid-19 for Kind Heaven Vegas failing, if he ever mentions it again.

Perry owes his "champagne wishes and caviar dreams" lifestyle to the success of Lollapalooza, for certain. But Lolla aside...Jane's is where the money is. For argument's sake, if this virus had us in a strict lockdown for 5 years, Perry's best chance at making money would be to resurrect Chaney's Addiction or make a phone call to Eric Avery...make some new music remotely or something. I'm totally speaking hypothetically. My point is just that...outside of the xiola/ANR bubble, there are tons of dormant Jane's fans...and during concert season, they awake from their slumber to show up at amphitheatres, etc whenever the band tours.

Think about it this way, Cleopatra Records just put out a new Danzig album and is prepping for a new Ministry album. Jane's is more popular than both of these artists. Just saying.

I don't know about that. :noclue:

Ministry is (was....?) touring in July/August and earlier this year upgraded venues in SF from Regency Ballroom (cap 1000) to the Warfield (cap 2,300) and sold out immediately. Warfield is the largest music venue in bay area (outside of Bill Graham Presents, The Masonic and various sheds/sports stadiums) .....Sold out everywhere else as well.

Couldn't see Janes doing that, standing on their own. No way.

Even NINJA, with Eric back, it was --> NIN!!.....oh, yea....ja. People streamed out of shoreline when nin set was over in '09.

When Jane's has played in decent size theaters (1000-2000 cap) in the US in the last 10 years, have they been sold out?

I would argue that Jane's Addiction is marginally more "mainstream"/popular than Ministry. Sure, they're not Pearl Jam or RHCP or something...but their fan base has got to be somewhat bigger than Ministry's...Jane's had some "hits" back in the day that are now part of "classic rock" radio (at least here in Canada). Jane's Addiction (any lineup) could easily sellout a 2,500 seat theatre in Toronto. At the NIN/JA show I was at, people weren't leaving after NIN.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not a Jane's 2.0 fanboy...but the sentiment on xiola/here that the band has a near nonexistent fan base is a wild exaggeration.

Not that I hold the original Alice In Chains in as high esteem as the original Jane's (though I do love me some Layne Staley)...but I'd say these band's have had vaguely similar trajectories. AIC is still playing decent sized venues.

Yeah, I'm sorry, Ministry is way bigger worldwide than JA is now.

In 2001, they couldn't *give away* tickets to see JA in Toronto -- I think they only had a few thousand people out of a possible 15,000+ at the Air Canada Centre. And that was nearly 20 years ago, a decade after they first broke up, and people still loved P4P.

Now? Not a chance they could play a stadium in Toronto, or pretty much any other major city. They might sell two nights at a 1500 seat venue, maybe, but even that seems doubtful.

Danzig? Nah. But Ministry are still beloved and have a really large cult following even among younger folks. Not enough to chart very highly or anything like that (rock/guitar music is dead anyway), but still...

They could do very well in theaters if they put something together now. They also could probably pretty easily get a slot at an amphitheater packaged tour kind of thing.

I'm talking North America.

We're somewhat in agreement. I never suggested Jane's could play "stadiums" (I think you mean arenas...only a select few artists play stadiums...U2, Coldplay, etc) or arenas. But the idea that they aren't big enough to play a 2,500 seat venue is delusional.

I mentioned Danzig and Ministry within the context of an indie label releasing new material by them...not live shows. However, in North America, Ministry is barely bigger than Danzig. And with the Misfits reunion shows, Danzig easily outsells Ministry.

I would love to see a small theater tour of Janes/Peter Hook. Or Janes/Jesus and Mary Chain. Or, a larger summer shed co headliner tour of Janes/Pumkins.

Yes to all of this. Maybe Jane's and Pumpkins could share their bass player between them...Jack Bates? Eric? Martyn?

Yeah Yeah Yeahs/Janes tour could be cool too. Of Course, none of this will ever happen.
