What's it with people always only referencing the two albums, and not XXX? Just because it wasnt official, or it didnt do it as much for you? :hs:

I mean I found NS first then RDLH, but I think I liked them about as good as Pearl Jam early stuff when it came out. ( like....A LOT) But true lunatic obsession came with finding XXX and the boots. For me anyways....
:noclue:

XXX never floored me like the WB albums. It's great, but its a little raw. Perry's vocals were still a bit goth soaked. Not a "life changing" kind of album. Nothings Shocking crosses in to that territory, and then Ritual is one of the greatest albums ever made.
Hmmm ....completely same reasoning but opposite regard for me...
:wiggle:

But I will have to say I liked Ritual better than NS overall at the time.

Most people who don't mention xxx were too young to know it when it came out...I loved xxx and always think of Jane's great 3 (I fucking hate covers but loved the ones on xxx)

People sometimes say where were you when this historical event happened . For me it was was when Jane's announced they were breaking up.

I love XXX but I don't think of it as a proper record. I thought it was one of those fake indie things a bunch of bands did for fake street cred? Plus the overdubbing of the live stuff? I also think you get a sense of how strained Perry's voice would get live that you don't hear on the studio albums. He was really reaching a lot of the time.

It's like asking what's your favorite Nicolas Cage movie? Most people will say Leaving Las Vegas but a few will say Matchstick Men

To me XXX is like an EP, with two covers, and two songs that should have been left on NS.... but I can see why they did it. The pre-overdub versions are cool..

XXX is lovely. Definitely part of what defined JA.

Boing!

For me Jane's is a live band. Great on record, but go beyond live. And most live recordings beat the proper albums for me. XXX was that step towards live that put them over the top for me....
:noclue:

Funny I havent listened to the albums proper in years (decades....?), sometimes listen to a track if it comes up. But I still listen to shitty boots all the time. Like Mt Baldy. What a shit recording and so much stuggle to keep the show going. But I feel that struggle so intensely each time I listen to it. It gives me chills every time....

I used to love going to record and tape conventions in 91/92 and finding all these shitty sounding JA tapes and vhs shows. It was awesome listening to those audience recordings.

Why did I never realize that Perry's mother committed suicide? And I feel like this is the first time I've ever heard that coming down the mountain was referring to coming down from being high. I always heard the story that he was looking down from Laurel Canyon and talking about how one day everyone one down in the city would know his name and that's what the cash in coming down the mountain was about.

I am truly shocked you didn't know this. It's basic Jane's knowledge.

I was fully aware his mom had died prematurely, that Then She Di(e)d was about her and Xiola etc etc

I was not aware that it was due to suicide. I did not forget. I guess I never thought about what her cause of death was.

And we are at a point in all of this that I do not get two shits about what piece of Janes knowledge I did not know or retain or have that someone else didn't.

Did you forget? I thought that was pretty well known. That's why she's mentioned in Then She Did... "Will you say hello to my ma? Will you pay a visit to her? She was an artist just as you were... I'd have introduced you to her... She'd repair legs like a doctor, on the kitchen chairs we sat on. She was unhappy just as you were..." etc.

I always thought that was Perry's way of connecting back to his childhood and his mom's suicide. Very cool to learn that's who Ms. Smith is.

Perry's lyrics were at their height when he was being real (even if it was cryptic and hidden) about the loss of important women in his life. That's when Jane's Addiction feels most real to me, anyway.
I mean, of course she died and I was well.aware of those lyrics. I did not realize she specifically died by suicide.
Huh. I forget what the source was (maybe Hard Rock Comics?) but I swear it was known that Perry "found her" in the bathtub when he was very little? Really awful. Totally makes sense why he and Dave would have bonded and why they are the way they are.
Didn't know Ms. Smith was Perry's mother, and Perry found her in the bathtub.

Would be interesting to know how she killed herself.

I always thought Bloody Rag - was originally an old jane song - was about her mother dying
"Somebody handed me a bloody rag that rag got thick and red and I wish and I hope but no way"

Maybe she cut her veins.

It would be weird, I agree. Teenage obsessive fandom is normal. Middle-aged obsessive fandom?
