When they play aggresively, it's pure hardcore punk, I can hear some Bad Brains.

when they play slower is funk tribal metal, when they play even slower is psychedelic goth...

It's almost impossible to define Janes genre.

Dave plays Van Halen, Eric plays Joy Division, Perry sing mix Robert Plant/Roots Dub, Stephen plays tribal, everything at speed of hardcore punk.

Then next song is completely different.

They were unique band.

By the 70s/80s unique, "no rules" definition of punk rock, they absolutely were...just like Ministry was, for example.

Unfortunately, punk was on its way to becoming a "genre" (of one sound) and a brand...so by the 90s, shit like "new punk" and the Warped tour were the results.

A band like Christian Death was a million times more "punk rock" than any 90s band that was on a shit record label like Epitaph.

I'm convinced you got into Jane's because in Whores Perry says the N-word.

PS: That's not punk rock.

I regard "punk rock" as a label. It was hard to pin a label on early Jane's. That's what blew me away. They sure had big cojones. In that sense they were punk, but not in a Sex Pistols kinda way. Oh well, not that important I guess.

Not trying to stir the shit here, totally respect your opinion. But that definition is sooooooo not punk. Anything that "fits the label" is NOT punk.

That's exactly why johnny disbanded the sex pistols.

Jane's Addiction absolutely had punk DNA. Anything that is fuck you, in your face, challenging the system has that DNA.

Absolutely.

However, they weren’t a punk rock band at all.

They were punk in the sense that they didn't seem to give a shit and didn't sell out to become pop artists. JA had the attitude to question authority "the man" and everybody really. They definitely had the "fuck you" spirit about them which is very punk rock, imho.

It's sad that we have to speak of JA in the past tense.

All of their videos from back in the day were “punk rock”.
