Best Mike Watt tracks?

#1 Post by Larry B. » Sat Aug 08, 2020 9:09 am

After listening to Mike’s interview involving our own guysmiley (well fucking done!), I got to reading about his discography and went back to listen my favourite songs of his.

In general, I’m not too fond of the music he does, but there are some tracks that I adore, all from the same album:

In the Engine Room
Black Gang Coffee
Fireman Hurley

I did enjoy “Plays Music for Airports”, from Psychic Temple, but I don’t think it’s an album I’d play regularly.

If you had to pick your 3, 5 or 10 favourite songs featuring him (excluding Porno For Pyros and Banyan), what would that list look like? I’d like a bit of guidance, considering there’s barely any albums out there that DON’T feature him. Dude’s been all over and I wouldn’t know where to start.

Yeah, Contemplating the Engine Room is a great album. Ball-Hog Or Tugboat? has some good stuff in there. I picked up the Whore - Various Artists Play Wire tribute back in the day because there's a Polar Bear track, but Watt's closer of "The 15th" steals the show. My favorite fIREHOSE tracks include "Can't Believe", "Walking The Cow", "In Memory Of Elizabeth Cotton", "Mannequin" (another Wire cover), and "Formal Introduction". Minutemen's Double Nickels On The Dime is essential listening.

So after being on Watt's show last August, he kept encouraging us to make more music even remotely. We recorded last November on our own in a large room, but didn't officially have a bass player. Unbelievably Watt was generous enough to fill the bass duties! Finally got everything mixed and the small UK label putting it out this July has been leaking tracks off it the last month. It'll be a split 7 inch with another friend's band south of here. Truly a dream come true to play with Watt. My cajones must be bigger than my brain, but so glad I asked Watt. Here's the labels tracks https://serialbowlrecords.bandcamp.com/ ... nderfucked
Oh also got Joe Queer from the Queers on a track and Norb from Boris the Sprinkler.

A cover from a little band a friend was in, that no one knows. Richard Gere.....

Love it!

This is great guysmiley, what an accomplishment! :thumb:

The two tracks you link there sound like a cross between the pogues and fugazi, and the richard gere has some good soundgarden vibes. It sounds great!

Did you do vocals and guitar?
