State of Jane's Addiction AD 2021?

#1 Post by janesbiggestfan » Sat Mar 20, 2021 5:00 am

So where are we with the band at this point? Will they ever play again? Will they record? Do we even care at this point?

My take: I have seriously lost interest in Jane's and I've even soured on them and their previous work based on their less than graceful aging and decline in recent years. So many bands have been showing that you can grow old in style and with class, which has increasingly put Jane's in bad light by comparison, if you consider their subpar output over the years.

My biggest gripe is with Perry, obviously. I can't recognize the guy I used to idolize when I see him now. It’s like he is a different human being. Right now, Perry is embarrassing. He looks like an old woman with the atrocious fake teeth and face surgery. Hard to look at. Friends have made remarks to this effect over the past several years, making fun of my admiration of the guy during years past. I think there is nothing wrong having an Asian sex-toy wife. Hey, I’d want one too! But it's really messed up if the sex-toy has giant ego, faux stardom ambitions and proceeds to take over your life etc. In other words, they guy wanted a tight little Asian girl and instead got a control-freak toxic whore of a wife who has greatly accelerated his decline. Or maybe someone who would order him around is what he actually wanted in the fist place? You know, with all this griping about lack of structure etc.

Dave, on the other hand, seems to be on some weird trip lately. He's been doing this drug (hallucinogenic) fueled self discovery thing. Good for him, but I think he has seriously let himself go in certain ways. Now he wears red Aladdin pants like Van Halen have in the early 1990s and has stopped coloring his hair jet black. I mean, sure it's the natural course of life, but the guy aged like 15 years in 2 years time, at least visually. He's also very skinny lately. At least he’s been playing a lot lately, getting into projects etc. But this doesn’t look like it will lead to anything concrete, as in: new albums.

My last connection to Jane's outside of this forum has been the radio presence of Dave and his friends, so the end of Dark Matter - and recently the end of the show that Todd Newman used to have with Dave's guitar tech - has really left me without any source of Jane’s related news. The very fact that they all sort of separated and no longer do things together also seems strange and sad.

Obviously the whole Covid situation hasn't really helped, but assuming we get out of this thing in the summer, do you honestly think anything will change? With Dave being in such a weird place and Perry circling the drain of aging has-been minor-stardom, I don't see anything positive coming out of the JA camp ever again.

Thoughts?

Ps: Sorry if I'm breaking any informal rules here, getting back to the account after several years and creating a new post as a low post count user, but from the current amount of activity here I'm guessing it doesn't really matter anymore anyway.

I don't think so, I think he's thriving. His doing street art and helping people struggling with trauma (which is really everybody isn't it) . https://dueldiagnosis.com/

This for me ...

I like coming here for the talk and all that

But I honestly don't care about any Jane's related news

They haven't been relevant since 1991. That's 30 years ago. They won't be relevant anymore and they won't produce any new worthy material. We all know that.

I would just hope they'd release some great sounding old school live shows. I think that's the best we can hope for atm, music wise

So isn't this psychedelic drug use and micro dosing a sign of impending relapse? I'll admit to near complete ignorance about drugs aside from alcohol and marihuana.

I just think no new Jane's news is the best possible news for what Jane's was

I don't think Navarro adheres to what one might consider the prescribed notion about relapse/sobriety/being clean.

So, when I first read about this with him (I think it was when 67 was still around) I thought it could be the predictable disaster. But after discussions with pros close to me and real talk about treatment resistant people, this looks like a responsible alternative at least in it's distribution.

The only thing of real interest after Jane's breakup was the Relapse and NIN/JA tours. Everything else is irrelevant.

Even though they are touring with Chaney this fall I'm really hoping they can do some writing with Eric possibly. Perry wished him a happy birthday on twitter so there is definitely some good will there.

I saw Dave Grohl talking about Kurt Cobain the other day, so there’s a possibility he might come back to life to do a gig or two.

I enjoyed Jubilee immensely more than NINJA.

Jubilee still felt like a specific era for all of those guys. The era where they were all still somewhat credible. The very, very tail end of it, but in that era. If nothing else, that performance of Kettle Whistle was incredible and still felt a LITTLE like the real thing.

By NINJA they were an ultra shitty version of Jane's...featuring Eric Avery. No thanks. I'd rather have them at the tail end of greatness with Martyn in tow than firmly entrenched in their douche baggery with Eric.

And yes, TGEA was much better than NINJA. But it felt like them pretending to be cool to spite Avery. Still better than the severely uncool NINJA version.

Yeah I think my complaints with Jubilee tour was the fact that it was basically an arena tour, and pretty much same set as relapse with the exception of kettle. Perry also started getting very very dandy during this tour lol.

That was indeed the beginning of him dressing a little dandy. I liked the pimp suits. It was the Davy Crockett outfit on the 2nd stage that was the first glimpse of him losing touch.
