Official Spirits On Fire tour thread
Re: Official Dallas/first night of Spirits On Fire tour thread
While not JA 1.0, it doesn't sound terrible, just different. Maybe it'll improve as the shows go (Covid has mellowed me and I'm more of an optimist nowadays). Perry sounds pretty good considering he's in his 60's. Perk and Eric are just locked in, so damn good. I was thinking while eating dinner, having Chaney in the band is the true definition of the Deconstruction lyric "its a shame when the parts fit, but the machine won't work". Technically proficient, nice guy, and whatnot, but man Eric brings a certain something to the songs that is undeniable.

Chemistry can’t be replicated..It’s the magical thing about music that still fascinates me!! ..It’s not something you can force?.. I’m curious how Stephen feels? ..After all those years? ..And I never felt Eric’s first return felt right? For many reasons?..This feels very different? .. I can’t put my finger on it? ..Perhaps as many have pointed out Covid shifted our consciousness? ..Maybe more in the moment? Enjoy things through different lenses and take each moment as it comes?..In any case this feels more natural?
Re: Official Dallas/first night of Spirits On Fire tour thread
Well said. And a lyric that has played in my head so many times in life.

A bunch of better sounding videos being uploaded now. I stand by my earlier assessments of TVL. I don’t mind that he’s not doing Dave’s solos (or even using them as a template), but he’s not playing anything particularly interesting. I just don’t find his musical mind appealing, at least in this context.
Eric and Stephen are crushing it, and I like the new energy—part of that is the novelty of TVL. Hope Dave can vibe on that when and if he returns.

It's funny, I feel 180 degrees opposite. For the 4 LA bar/club shows in 2008/2009, Erics return felt more then right. Clearly things went to hell during the Reznor sessions and the NINJA tour it became more and more obvious Eric wasn't long for the band as the tour wore on. This feels like Eric getting a payday. The real test is whether they can come up with decent new music.
Re: Official Dallas/first night of Spirits On Fire tour thread
Started out in the right place and fun didn’t it? ..Lotta bitterness from Perry towards the band leaving him still existed...And Perry even said he hated Rock music during that period...Prescription meds!!..Dick waving contest!!..”I like’s em big” etc!! ..Voice and inspiration missing!!..Down-tuned and tired...Felt forced to me? ..Uncomfortable. I thought it was disappointing ..I think this is coming from a completely different place this time? More genuine vibe? ..Eric has played in many bands for paychecks but somehow I think this is different for him this time?..People involved in totally different places today..Maybe I’m really off? But I feel this is for fun and creative energy this time?.. Tying up loose messy strings and past regrets .. Possible potential?Pandemonium wrote: ↑Mon Oct 03, 2022 7:27 pmIt's funny, I feel 180 degrees opposite. For the 4 LA bar/club shows in 2008/2009, Erics return felt more then right. Guitar parts are hard to pick out? .Messy!!..Especially on my iPhone and the audience recording…But there’s life in the old whore yet!! Glad Perry is kicking up his delay!! And putting effort into it!! https://youtu.be/uNgJzO0R83E
Re: Official Dallas/first night of Spirits On Fire tour thread
I am really sorry for triple posting but it occurred to me that maybe Perry and Dave got a little too comfortable? A little too autopilot? Maybe all of this wonderful new Porno for Pyros energy and current struggles that Jane’s is having is actually really good in the long run?.. It seems like Perry is reaching really deep for what he has left in the tank? ..Instead of going through the motions? .. I mean that’s how I’m kind of seeing it?. What are you guys thinking? . As a guitar player also, I’m kind 🫤. But I think I am going to go to the show when it comes to the Bay..If I can get tickets “just because”.I love Energy!!

Re: Official Dallas/first night of Spirits On Fire tour thread
Watching those videos is amazing to me how good those basslines feel and how long that was missing.
Also lol at Perry and Eric sharing a bro moment before stop

I like the Houston videos a lot more than Dallas. Dave's absence is definitely felt. Troy has a very Chris Chaney like effect on the band. Hopefully Dave gets better and we can get classic Jane's one last time. Also, Perry is sounding very much his age.

Re: Official Dallas/first night of Spirits On Fire tour thread
I’d love a Chaney type on guitar who actually played the parts properly. I thought TVL would be that, and was looking forward to a little inspired coloring outside the lines.
Instead, we have an extremely haphazard take on some truly signature guitar parts. On the bright side, the combination of factors gives an edge that reminds of the XXX era. Except that 19 year-old Navarro smokes fiftysomething TVL. Fuck, 19 year old *me* smokes fiftysomething TVL. Oh well.
But overall it’s fun to experience some actual energy with this band. I hope Dave can rejoin and make proper use of it. ASAP, please.

Much better Three Days in Houston; Troy seems to have overcome the nerves of the Dallas show... 11 min. ? Sure!~
Hope this is a sign to come; it's gotta get better...

I was thinking just the opposite, the clips I saw Troy was moving around a lot, interacting with Perkins, pulling some shapes :) I wouldn't want a note for note replica of Dave's parts from a stand in guitarist, I want him to bring some of his own artistry which I certainly hear in the FX and textures.
As for other guest guitarists, bringing on Nels Cline would be exciting!!!

Maybe I haven't watched enough. Looked stiff and sounds generic from what I've seen. Blending in with the stage.

It’s like 1971 Jimmy Page in the band. Which you’d think I’d like more, lol.

As I said, I actually like it. I don't expect a 100% copy of Dave or anyone - that would be impossible. I think that some solos (like the "Three Days" one) are "signature", and you have to play at least the 90% of it as they were recorded.
Any substitute musician needs a couple of dates before settling in. I saw the first shows of the "new" lineup of Ghost in 2017 in Europe, and they were really sloppy at the beginning. Everything went so much better in the upcoming ones :). Same happened with other bands.
Also, Troy Van Leeuwen is one of my fav guitar players from the late 90s/early 2000s (and on). Give him a few dates, he's proving that he's capable of doing the good solos and adding textures, too .

Re: Official Spirits On Fire tour thread
TVL doesn’t seem to be influenced by Jerry Garcia, so alternating between E Mixolydian and E minor pentatonic eludes him. If he understood that, he could improvise whatever he wanted on the Three Days solo and it would sound more in keeping with the piece.parklife03 wrote: ↑Tue Oct 04, 2022 1:24 pmAs I said, I actually like it. Re: Official Spirits On Fire tour thread
Same thing with those little clean licks in the quiet interim of Ocean Size. TVL plays natural minor (like Jimmy Page might); Dave plays mixolydian (like Garcia).
Little things like that matter to the character of the song because they are important tonal color.
I do like some of Troy’s noise bits.

Re: Official Spirits On Fire tour thread
This is the kind of analysis that musicians who know theory like to give, but it sure would make for boring music if artists actually followed it. I think it can be interesting to explore different sounds, even when theory says it shouldn't work. Maybe it doesn't "work". At least it's different.CaseyContrarian wrote: ↑Tue Oct 04, 2022 2:08 pmSame thing with those little clean licks in the quiet interim of Ocean Size.
