Chris Chaney interview - some Jane’s material discussed

#1 Post by choccyd » Fri Dec 09, 2022 12:20 pm

I know Chris doesn’t get a lot of love on this forum but he’s featured on a podcast and there’s some interesting stuff in there, including how he got to join Jane’s. Also discusses NHC.

The Jane's stuff was somewhat interesting. It starts at around 48 minutes. I didn't try to find the NHC stuff.

I don't know that I've ever really heard him talk about anything before. He's just as dry as you would expect.

Only thing of note regarding NHC is that there are plans to release the full record when it’s appropriate

Janes stuff was somewhat interesting

I said this awhile back- he’s the Josh Freese of bass and will have no trouble ever finding session work

Josh Freese has style and at least SOME personality though.

I’m talking strictly in terms of technical ability- both get the job done.

Josh’s Instagram is hilarious with all the PF Chang references. Nice guy too I chatted with him during lockdown

I have negative interest in listening to it

Can someone summarize?

I really, really liked him comparing Avery's bass lines to lullabies (in a positive way).

He mainly talks about his session work but says for Strays for the most part he tried to stay true to what Martyn played since most of it was already recorded when he stepped in. Says he’s proud of Just Because becoming the band’s most successful single and that it was the last song worked on for Strays.

Also says he doubled the bass on everybody’s friend (don’t hear it) and almost used the bass Roger Waters played on the Wall but it wasn’t in good shape

Do you guys like the Wall?

There are lovers and haters ... I think it's a masterpiece.

Excellent production as well.

the Wall is my 5th favorite Floyd album .. Animals takes the top spot .. used to love the Wall more than I do now but it still has a lot of great stuff on it .. maybe a tad much Roger Waters pained wailing but still pretty great at times

I don’t have any axe to grind with Chaney. He’s an employee and he’s competent and he seems respected but he’s a stage bore. Whatever. The Josh Freese comparison isn’t okay. In Devo alone, Josh has done more to add to a group in one minute than Chaney did in Jane’s in 20 years.
