I didn't see Relapse, but have seen everything else. Flea is Flea and there is no hiding that, but it almost felt like JA have spent the last 20 years hiding the non-founding member of the band on stage. As much as I like Martyn, he slotted it without standing out (plus, he wasn't there for long), but then we had years of Chaney. His second and only other duty in the band (other than aping the notes) was to blend into the woodwork. Which he did, perfectly.

We've spent a few decades watching an original 3 + a cardboard cutout (Troy kind of was that, also). So now with Josh, we have someone unafraid or allowed to show himself on stage and it takes some getting used to.It's polarizing, I guess, and I get that, but it's no coincidence that this is the most vital this band has felt for years.

It feels less polished and less routine, which is bringing out the best in all of them.

Best case scenario is Dave gets better and feels motivated to re-claim his position.

The current JA recipe works really well; I wouldn't add or remove a thing. I think adding Dave back into the mix would be too salty.

The band hasn't sounded so good in years! The élan is back in their performances.

It’s because of Eric. He’s really, really into it. And he’s a fucking monster on stage. The energy he brings drives everyone else on stage. They are all vibing off each other, locked in. It’s awesome.

Mountain Song had become almost boring over recent years but that rendition in Chile was magnificent.

I’d counterpoint that when I saw them in Sao Paulo (2009, I think), it was the four of them and the energy wasn’t there. And Dave’s “clean” playing has been an issue for me for years and years. That doesn’t mean that any old dirty fucking guitar player would fit, but Josh has certainly done so far.

If it were the four of them right now, I’m not sure it would work. Dave’s sound is just too clean for Jane’s, there’s no chance of chaos. And I don’t want chaos, but I want to feel that the music is on the brink of it, and the current combo does that.

They're probably planning on hitting the studio after this current run of shows so they can capture some of the live magic they have been producing, to shoot for a spring 2024 release, so they can hit the summer festival circuit next year.

If I had to guess, I'd say Dave is probably in rehab right now and will probably be in the studio with them in 90 days.

There's nothing better for a recovering addict than hobbies with people who are also clean.

Best case scenario, Dave is cool with Josh adding some guitar licks the same way he was cool working with Dave Sitek on Great Escape Artist. I don't think he's a jealous dude. He was fine working with Pete on Hard Charger too. And as a former Chili Pepper, having Josh on the record just seems super normal.

Fingers crossed this all works out in the end for these dudes. 🤞🏼🤞🏼🤞🏼

that would be awesome, but Perry made it sound like it’s only gonna be Josh in that interview from over the weekend

Everything’s alright, it was a very minor one for our standards.

I'd wondered about this....Dave having gone dark in social media (yet again) in recent weeks...whether he's in rehab or a hole.

As an aside, it was interesting to see Eric drinking on stage recently (albeit a sip or two on an IPA) - hadn't seen that in a very long time.

New interview

No question as to how much they are enjoying Josh and what he's brought to the band.

The comparison between "listeners" and "drowners" is also interesting.

That comparison explains why PF has been sounding good- everybody is listening!

I love the enthusiasm and excitement the guys have about the future of JA and Josh.

I giggled when PF referred to himself as an "elder gentleman".

Encouraging that Perry says Dave is “doing good”

Interesting too that spaceland show Eric talks about is on YouTube.

Seems like Perry didn’t know much about Josh until recently. I wonder if he knows that Josh played on SYTBS

I just rewatched the Chile show. Perry is playing his voice/effects so well right now. The band sounds incredibly tight, too. Looking forward to new uptempo stuff.
