I'm not going to inundate this post with links to journal articles about the mental health situation amongst teens and young adults.
At least that would stand a chance of being an upgrade on the rest of the bullshit you seem to have brewing.
I'd have to say I'm with Rick on this one.

Why change a lyric to one of your songs? Because of some woke culture? Censorship? Can't you see things in their time frame? Maybe he can take out all the drug buying references in Jane Says and make a love song out of it?

Reminds me of that scene in the Doors movie. 'It's just a word, Jim'.

I was listening to Sraight Outta Compton on Spotify this week. Half of the lyrics were changed. Smells like censorship in my book. So this version will be the norm in 30 years time? And the lp version will long be forgotten? Because the use of words like yo muthafuckin' nigga aren't woke enough?

My kids are 11 and 8 now. The fact that they are being exposed to all this youtube/tiktok bullshit and hardcore porn worries me more than someone using the word nigger.

I do get annoyed people can't always see context of the time things were made or done. (Getting angry at old presidents etc.) If people get angry about the song being recorded in the 80s then that's a step too far. But Perry wrote it and he can perform it anyway he sees fit.

Personally I have no used for that word and I'm not upset the group it was aimed to dehumanize has adopted it as endearing. Some double standards you can just let go for good reason.

I'm really exhausted by these culture war issues media has kept us busy fighting about. I just try not to be an asshole and live and let live. I'm not always successful.

I can’t listen at the moment but in the video of No-one’s Leaving which was posted a few weeks ago i thought I noticed that Perry self-censored the “coz he was dark” line.

Oh yes because all of the woke outrage directed at Perry.

Two things. 1. Has Perry ever struck you as less than very progressive? 2. Has Perry ever been the type to be censored against his will without a fight?

Maybe, just maybe, it’s not a word he still believes he should be saying.

Some of you sound like RATM fans upset about their politics.

I don’t think you get it.

It seems like Perry has gone from not caring what other people think to caring alot . Usually when people get old they have no filter . He seems very calculated

From recent interviews hes just as strange but without the edge that made him interesting.

If I’m Perry and I’m a successful musician who helps run lollapalooza world wide, I would have no problem dropping a single word from a song that doesn’t have a definitive studio recording and is not on an actual record to continue to do what I do. Dumb hill to die on

I don't feel like this is a case of Perry caving in to the woke movement. I'm only speculating, but he might feel like hey there's enough divisiveness going on right now and it bothers him so why add to it. These things start from the top and trickle down. Why take the chance of whatever his initial use of the lyric was being misinterpreted, so if the word offends some people big deal don't say it. The entire band might've even took a vote on it who knows?

Perry was in 20's when he wrote that song, even in that Rolling Stone article that came out in '97, Perry was already saying, "The songs that don't apply to us, we should discard. For instance, this song 'Whores' sounds silly right now, right? Am I still going to still sing 'I love the whores'? Do I still love the whores? Well aren't I a little older and wiser? He eventually says in the article that yes he does still love the whores, but maybe now that they're all older they feel the use of the N-word is cringy and as Eric would say, gives them douche chills.

Some of you will never be happy with this band.

Who fucking cares what he is singing.

Go get another beer, hit your joint, put your arm around the person you came with, and be happy you... and they... are still alive to enjoy live music at this point. :noclue:

It has nothing to do with the band. It’s white make outrage at suddenly feeling like they’re not in complete control anymore.

Do some people take “canceling” too far? Yes. Are there instances of over correction? Yes. But a lot of white men are acting like the woke police are banging down their doors and telling them that if they don’t get Being White is Wrong tattooed on their foreheads they’ll be lynched in the town square. Calm down Chet.

It's not even a good rhyme. With "littered"?
Any of these would roll off the tongue better: bigger, figure, and of course trigger.

If you gotta stick with "littered" how about,

way down low where the streets are littered
I find my fun with the freaks unfiltered

Perry, that's my gift to you, no need to work me into the publishing splits.

Just a few weeks ago before this thread even popped up I was wondering if it would still be appropriate for PFP playing Packin' .25 at live shows considering the gun violence culture in the US these days.

I always loved the music and melody of "Packin' .25"...but the lyrics made me cringe from day one. It seems slightly uncharacteristic of Perry. That being said, people shouldn't necessarily be attributing song lyrics to the artist's authentic self. Music and lyrics are art and a lot of the time, singers are playing a role.

That being said, I don't think the N word should be self-censored in "Whores". What's next? Should film directors like Tarantino start overdubbing safer words into their old movies?

Pete claims Packin .25 is actually his story. He says that when the riots started he and Perry went downtown to loot and Pete brought his .25 with him. Which wouldn’t surprise me from meeting both of them. Pete seems a bit more legitimately hardcore than Perry.

And I wouldn’t expect Tarantino to edit his old movies. But I can’t imagine he’d still feel as comfortable saying that word himself on screen anymore. And rightfully so.

After listening to the Brasil show from a couple weeks ago it sounds normal to me. I can't imagine Perry self censoring the word dark. That would have been the final straw for me.

I remember shortly before Strays came out I was at the supermarket walking down that one aisle where they have the magazine rack. So I started skimming through one of the guitar magazines because on the cover it featured an interview with Navarro. The whole article was about the lengths he went thru to achieve the perfect sound and technique to get Superhero just right. When the song came out I didn't like it that much but I appreciated the work he put into it. It ended up being the intro for that show Entourage so I always considered the song a success.

Funny, if there’s any song by “Jane’s Addiction” that’s gonna cause me to fly into a violent rage, it’s this one. Oh, along with “Another Soulmate”. The latter is such a potential menace to society that it was removed from platforms the same week of its release.

As an aside, Patti Smith’s “Rock N Roll Nigger” was quietly removed from streaming platforms last year, without explanation.

Color me shocked that basic logic fails you. You can always fuck off and find a different board. I’d probably find a different band as well. They’re also progressives.
