Tonight would have been my show. Too bad.

I made a 15 second video of my socks years ago and it got more views.

Iβll die on the hill that SYTBS was lyrically odd, and at times a bit generic with its electronica elements, but a worthy successor to GGU.Stickyfingers wrote: βTue Oct 17, 2023 10:50 amYou are very kind, but I would say almost 3 decades. He hasn't done anything memorable since GGU.

The title track sounded a lot like the bridge between GGU and Kettle Whistle β97.
Shekina has strong Kimberly Austin vibes.
Our Song sounds like it was taken from a Bjork record (her producer worked on SYTBS).
To Me sounds like it could have been on GGU.
There are other decent tracks but those were always the stand outs to me.
Much like GGU, that was a heavily underrated piece of work
Perry should have continued his career with P4P instead of Janes, that's my humble opinion.
Wealthy old people don't really have anything to say that I'd want to hear.JOEinPHX wrote: βTue Oct 17, 2023 12:02 pmI think there was some decent stuff on Strays and TGEA, both lyrically and melodically
But, generally speaking, I'd just like for him to try his hand at talking about the political climate around the world again, rather than another half dozen songs about Etty
This tracks with my memories. I was running an independent record store at the time, and eagerly hoarded the promo.autumnan wrote: βWed Oct 18, 2023 2:52 pm+1 for SYTBS
The production was a bit dated even for its time. Not many rock artists get the transition into electronica right.
But Perry's record had just enough quirkiness and sparkly-eyed new-age goodwill to make it endearing to me. There are a few moments which even make me feel quite emotional.
Two months later 9/11 happened and totally harpooned any of that summer's optimism.

After No Code everything just sort of blends in for me. The last two records especially are unremarkable.JOEinPHX wrote: βThu Oct 19, 2023 9:38 amHaving money doesn't necessarily make people lose the ability to know right from wrong.Hype wrote: βWed Oct 18, 2023 3:39 pmWealthy old people don't really have anything to say that I'd want to hear.JOEinPHX wrote: βTue Oct 17, 2023 12:02 pmI think there was some decent stuff on Strays and TGEA, both lyrically and melodically

Pearl Jam isn't saying anything different on record 10 than they were on record 1, and they're fucking loaded.
Stone is the one who is known to be a sarcastic dickhead. All of them also seem like people who everyone say is nice but would be complete dicks to me⦠just something about Eddie in particular

I'm sure there are wealthy old people saying or singing things that are true. I just don't care. I don't need to hear Bob Dylan's latest diatribe. I can go listen to the nonsense he was spouting in the 60s. Likewise with Perry Farrell. I already have the song One Percent. I don't need a rehash of it, or some weird modern take from a guy who's been out of touch for 30+ years.JOEinPHX wrote: βThu Oct 19, 2023 9:38 amHaving money doesn't necessarily make people lose the ability to know right from wrong.Hype wrote: βWed Oct 18, 2023 3:39 pmWealthy old people don't really have anything to say that I'd want to hear.JOEinPHX wrote: βTue Oct 17, 2023 12:02 pmI think there was some decent stuff on Strays and TGEA, both lyrically and melodically

I get it. I pay more attention to melodies than lyrics at this point, but a bad lyric can really fuck up a great melody.Hype wrote: βFri Oct 20, 2023 5:15 amI'm sure there are wealthy old people saying or singing things that are true. Perry could sing about spoons and diapers and chia pets for all I care (see: Porno For Pyros) as long as the music and his vocals are good. Lyrics do matter, but if the music sucks, the poetry or insight is irrelevant.
